I am a vehement supporter of open discussion and free speech, but can I ask Arn and the team to delete any post that deounces SJ or celebrates his end when it comes. There will be those that just want a reaction and I ask that the moderators act swiftly on that day. PLEASE.

It will be sad anyway, but for those of us that have been using Apple for years and have been exposed to SJ's vision for so long that we begin to have an intuitive understanding of the future (if not a specific foresight), the passing will be hard (whether that is rational or reasonable). I for one don't want idiots making those days worse.

Does anyone agree? Does Arn want to give us some assurance?

As long as people are respectful I see no problem with constructive criticism but "good riddance" "burn in hell" etc should lead to instant banning IMHO.

The day he passes on will be an incredibly sad day, I hope Obama declares a day of national mourning.

No we are starting to get a little ridiculous..

Why ? greatest businessman and innovator of our lifetime, changed the way we live our lives, invented the mouse control later adopted by all PC's, employs hundreds of thousands of people around the world, built a bankrupt organisation into the biggest company in America.

He is fully deserving of a national day of mourning, best president America never had and a national hero

Because it is clearly opinionated. Just because you think he is doesn't mean everyone else does.

employs hundreds of thousands of people around the world,

And??? Last time I checked there are tons of companies that employ hundreds of thousands of people. Should we give Jim Skinner, CEO of McDonalds a national day of mourning too..? I bet you will say.. NO! Because hes not your 'hero' Steve Jobs.

He's not the only man that changed the tech industry. There are plenty of others who helped also.

National hero? I'm sorry but I don't see it the same way as you I guess

Mc Donalds didnt change the world, in a good way...

Computers are much more involved in our lives than hamburgers..

Is there a national day of mourning for the man who made the silicon chip. Or even the diode?

Stop being ridiculous. He's just a man that had a vision for really good products. Nothing more.

McDonalds makes no difference to our lives, Apple have changed the way completely we have lived our lives

Jobs invented the mouse system which became the norm across the world replacing the ghastly command prompt

Jobs changed the music industry to the point that iTunes dominates the music charts

Jobs bought MP3 to the masses with his iPod

He has changed the way we lived our lives completely, lot more deserving than a guy that bought cheese burgers to the masses

I hope that "banning" would be reserved for serious forum rule violations - and not applied to anyone just for a negative comment on Jobs.

On the other hand, liberal use of the "3-day timeout" for obvious shock posts would be a good thing.

...

Umm, Apple has not changed the way that I live my life.

Jobs did not invent the mouse.

Jobs did mess up the music industry by convincing people that convenience trumps quality sound.

I wasn't asking for a day of mourning. I just want those that may well have some strong opinions about how bad he has been for the world to show a little restraint when the time comes. There are overly eager and insensitive people on both sides. I just wanted Arn to state his views upfront.

The Mac was definitely the first comp to do away with the command prompt and introduce the mouse system that has dominated the world of computing since then so to me that makes Jobs as the pioneer of the mouse even if he didn't personally invent it, imagine how screwed up IT would be today if we were still stuck with command prompt.

Jobs' death is going to be felt very badly by a lot of people so it is right totally that we should be allowed to mourn him free from trolls gloating at his death, sadly I think we are not that far from finding out

I agree with you, and I don't think anyone should be joyous at a time of the death of someone, but when the time comes and someone like Bill Gates goes, I am sure people on here will be rejoicing as well..

(I'm not a Microsoft fan boy just stating my opinion for those who want to outcast me as such..)

Look up "Xerox Star" - the system that Apple copied.

And, oddly enough, some around here say that the return of the command prompt is one of the greatest strengths of Apple OSX. ;)

Some of the stuff above, glorifying Jobs to the certain degree makes me ask "Is this real life?"

I have many many things that changed my life far more than computers. People could exist without them and have. MS and partners made it mainstream for the masses with better price points.

If a phone and tablet change your life then....lol.

Da Vinci was a far greater inventor IMO

PS: I will feel bad for his family when he passes, I dislike him, I do have respect for him though. Leading the ship where Apple was in 97 to now is impressive and should be looked at by business people and students for sure. Slick marketing, good products and image go a long way. Synergy I call it. What he had with Pixar as well, dude is very intelligent.

I am a bit of an Apple fan boy and not too keen on all things MS (I love some of it). However Bill Gates, for all his faults is also a remarkeable man and besides his considerable contributions to technology, his contributions to African aid, education and health are nothing short of remarkeable.

And if he didn't create it I'm sure someone would have.. Just like other great minds created other things for the computer or laptop..

I understand everyone is upset that jobs might be losing a battle but EVERYONE needs to get a grip and realize he is just a man that happened to have a great ability and was the CEO of a great company..

But he isn't the greatest thing next to sliced bread

All men come to nought in the face of all of human achievement, but some deserve our recognition none the less and SJ is one such man. There are many others and he is not unique as a contributor to humankind; but he is unique in his contributions and that makes him special.

PS: sliced bread is OK; but I'd prefer a world with SJ and no sliced bread rather than the other way round.

I think you are underestimating Steve and his Mac vision ... and who wouldn't love a nice slice of warm fresh bread with butter on it :D

But the way people are talking is they think steve did everything for the computer industry and thaat he will love forever.

I could go for some toast right now. Lol

I am not "upset" as such, I am resigned to the fact it is going to happen, each day more or less I expect to see a news report that he has died so I am braced for when that day happens, I will be upset of course but not in the way i would be a family member dying but at the same time Steve should be thanked for what he has given to the world and his achievements, even the most extreme MS fanboy can't dismiss Jobs' achievements.

Viewing them from a different perspective is not dismissing them, nor is correcting statements like "Jobs invented xxx" when clearly he did not.

He invented the personal computer with a keyboard and mouse. That I can say freely. :)

He still bought things to the masses though

MP3 players were about before iPod's came about, Jobs just made them cool and sexy

Jobs didn't invent the tablet computer but he bought it to the masses

Jobs didn't invent the cellphone but he made it cool and trendy to own a phone

Jobs didn't invent animated movies but he is responsible for most of the successful animated movies of my lifetime through Pixar

Jobs didn't personally invent the mouse but he bought it to the masses

Jobs is the greatest marketeer of my lifetime and probably anyone's, who else in the middle of a deep recession could get hundreds of millions of people to fork out huge sums of money they can ill afford in many cases on tablet computers and iPhones ?

A "different perspective" would be that Jobs "led the team that took the Xerox interpretation of the mouse and GUI, and developed and marketed a more affordable version".

The TRS-80 was on sale more than six years before the Mac. The mouse was invented when Steve Jobs was eight years old. Obviously keyboards were in use before Jobs was born.
