This is just plain WEIRD! Bleah...

I would hide my face if I was caught going to see something like this at the theater.

He should have sold it as a 1.99 or 2.99 ios/ mac app store app. I bet he would have made more money than he will showing it in a few big city theatres.

i had actually considered going to theaters to see it (it's only $8 and one of the theaters is just a mile from me,) but after reading everyone's comments, i agree that i'd much rather see this video online, or at least on tv.

So basically Cringley is just trying to cash in on it like everyone else.

Right, because information "just wants to be free." This interview took time and effort to make, but that doesn't matter, obviously.

The book does make several references to his extensive bootleg collection (Dylan, Beatles, he and Woz tramping around San Jose tracking down as many bootlegs as they could, etc.) and since the internet didn't exist back then, I wonder how many of these he got for free?

I infer from this you don't understand what a "bootleg" record was. These were not rips of copyright materials, but unapproved releases of unpublished material; sometimes also known as "basement tapes." Basically what Dead and Phish fans did, although illegally. You can call it "intellectual property theft" if you will, but it was not copyright infringement.

How shameless...

They didn't care about the footage until Steve dies and then they dig it out of a garage to try to make money off of it. The whole "I've got three kids to put through college...." line really pissed me off. A lot of people have kids to put through college.

I wouldn't pay to see it unless all the money went to pancreatic cancer research or some other charity. That's what they should have done.

Apple rehires Steve 1995
iPod released 2001
iPhone released 2007
iPad released 2010
Steve dies 2011

16 years was Steve's primary life accomplishment at Apple in sales terms.
Only 10 years was the era of actual resurgence. A blink of an eye.

I'd put it back a little futher...at least to 1998 with the iMac G3. Don't forget about OSX and iOS, either. Of course, Apple wouldn't have existed without Steve back in 1976.

What is your point?

Are you saying how impressive it was that Jobs led so many innovations in such a short time, or that you can't be that impressed by somebody who only dominated consumer technology for a lousy ten years?

i didn't read the entire thread, but I'm surprised at all the negative comments for this being in theaters. the guy is being honest about putting his kids through college and he is trying to make extra money for a product that will sell. steve jobs was an awesome person but he's put plenty of people out of money to add to his and apples billions. to make money is apart of life and survival. those complaining really need to stop being internet goody goodies.

If he owns it, he has every right to try to make a buck off it, but I still hope it bombs.

Wrong.

And it was 1996.

Technically it is. An artist owns the right to any material created unless he or she signs that right to a third party. All recording of concerts is actually a breach of copyright.

Having said that, the theft of people's film and even cameras, as well as recording equipment by security staff at gigs is something I found disgusting. Not sure how much of that goes on anymore. Probably not much considering the fact that our cameras are on our phones, and how many clips appear on YouTube.

Also, my best collections of Springsteen material are on the excellent bootlegs created and distributed by the Crystal Cat!

It's a complicated world. There are facts. There are laws. There are moral ambiguities. And there is human behaviour. Somewhere in there are the choices we all make. Steve was an arch pirate. He made money from the blue box scam. He was a huge Dylan fan, yet saw no problem with failing to enrich him or his recording company by acquiring bootleg tapes of his material.

Then he gave us iTunes. Thanks Steve. I for one understand your mindset and thank you for everything you did.

I just don't like the way that he went about it. He posted on his blog about it, and asked his readers what they thought he should do with it. Most of the posts said to upload the entire thing to youtube or torrent it for free. Others said to put it on iTunes for a few bucks and donate the proceeds to a charity dealing with cancer.

Then he decides to cash in on it with an over the top manner by releasing a VHS dub on theatre screens?

I suspect this was his goal all along, and he just made the original blog post to drum up interest and headlines, so he could get a better deal when negotiating with Landmark, and whoever the DVD and streaming distributors will be.

I'm glad this is seeing the light of day, but there's no doubt this is exploiting the death of someone Cringely has tried to make out as his old friend.

Nice, sounds like a good first-date movie. Also, you can go all the way in the thater since you will be alone in there. Sweet.

Most of the posts you say? As in the majority?

There were 266 responses to the original story on Cringely’s site and I can’t recall more than ten that said it should be available for free – and I’m including posts that said it should be available for free after a period of time has elapsed.

Feelings on the subject were a tad more varied than what you’re claiming as well.

Anybody go see this?

I thought it was fantastic! Some material we've heard before but a lot of new perspectives on other things.

I loved Steve's reply on the question: Would you describe yourself more as a nerd or a hippy.

People always like to recall the past, have experienced already etched in the minds of all, regardless of happy sad, it reminds us of when the mouth up, but what we have, we have been accustomed to, we take for granted, it can often be ignored, everything around us too much, can not be anything seriously, but once lost, we have to break the original, we will be better suited to, feel how it exists for us how important it was felt the meaning of existence, to think about to nostalgia, but unfortunately probably already too late, everything has a meaning of its existence.I think it is about R4 3DS.
