During yesterday's Media announcement involving the U2 iPod, iPod Photo, and International iTMS stores, Steve was using what appeared to be a version of keynote with features not yet released in the wild. An independent photoblog shows the images and transitions. Given Steve's propensity to use only Apple-made items when possible, it's doubtful these were made with 3rd party plugins.

Keynote 2.0 has been rumored to be on the update slate for a few months.

I noticed that the text was using a tracking in method as well when I watched the Keynote. Also, there was a ripple transition, and a fade from behind text zoom.

It would be great to get an update of keynote, I really want to use it here at work, but I can't create presentations as quickly as I can with Powerpoint. . . of course the keynote ones look way cooler, with quartz effects and all.

The ripple transition was amazing. I hope there is more that just some new transitions, like, oh FASTER. How about a better user interface without all the properties windows floating around.

God, i hope so too.

And, I hope Apple puts in all of the presenter tools which have become standard with PPT 2004. Having the timer, next slide, notes, etc. is simply fantastic, and is tempting me to switch back to PPT.

I have stuck with Keynote since I want to support Apple and because I think Keynote displays cleaners. But the anemic functionality for presenters is geting tiring. I hope it's not just a bunch of new transitions...or even worse, there is no 2.0 version.

It's funny. I knew Jobbs used Keynote for his keynotes. I also noticed the Tiger droplet effects. What I didn't make was the connection.

I'm hoping for an update - although that droplet effect looks like it would require Tiger. Mind you, I suppose it could just supply its own version, a la Motion for Panther.

I don't think we'll see an Apple office suite - they've made it clear that they don't want to move into Microsoft's territory for fear of MS Office being withdrawn from Mac. I was starting to get the impression that Keynote was just going to quietly rest in peace and be allowed to fade into oblivion. (Apple may have originally wanted to create an MS Office killer but now squashed that idea).

I'm in the situation where I have PowerPoint v.X and, yes, I would love Keynote, but I can't justify getting it. Sure, it's better than PowerPoint, but PowerPoint is still functional and I can't justify the extra cost. I was also worried that as soon as I bought Keynote, version 2 would come out. Now, maybe my interest is renewed.

Needs Tiger

My guess is that he was running a new version of Keynote on Tiger - since those effects are just like the CoreImage ones demoed at WWDC. I don't think Keynote 2.0 will be released before Tiger.

From this glimpse all I can say is SWeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. :D

I bet that Keynote 2.0 will sport the same feature set as PP 2004. And also have the icing to top of the cake. :D

Bring it, bring it, bring it. Can't wait. :D

I also noticed that too. But since i'm not a power user of keynote (i don't use powerpoint either), I didn't know if that was new or just a cool feature of keynote 1.

I've been sticking with Keynote as well, and always get compliments on how nice my "Powerpoint" looks, but there are some sorely needed features. Like when you are using two screens and the screen you are looking at doesn't show you what is coming next after it gets to the bottom of the column: what's with that!? Those timing things would be awesome too...

But my questions is, does Apple usually offer an update price if you have software, such as Keynote 1? I've bought Jaguar and Panther upgrade versions, but never regular standalone software.

Exporting to iPod photo

Wonder if you'll be able to export Keynote presentations to the new iPod and then just plug that into a projector. That would be a pretty neat feature, IMO.

The first time I used Keynote...

I got a $100,000 sale. Not my biggest sale but a nice one.

I was at a tradeshow and our PC was tied up for software demos. I had brought my handy dandy TiBook (to keep me amused) and just bought Keynote on eBay (cheap). I wanted to try it out.

I put together a nice presenetation with some charts showing cost comparisons and spinning cude transitions. 10 minutes work and I had the nicest presentation in the tradeshow (huge show). It really POPPED.

Caught the eye of some passing people including a decision maker or two and a few months later I had taken a national account away from one of my rivals.

That's an interesting idea - the presentations would have to be simplified (transitions/animations/media removed) but it could work pretty well.

I'm desperately waiting for Keynote 2.0

I can probably continue holding my breath until January, but if Keynote continues to languish much beyond then, I'll have to hold my nose and buy Office 2004 to get PowerPoint.

I've been using Keynote for presentations, and it really blew people away before PowerPoint copied many of the nice transitions. I still think Keynote presentations look better, but the lack of presenter control and other features now available in PowerPoint have forced me to consider switching back to PowerPoint.

Unlike Microsoft, Apple's software development folks really seem to understand how people *use* computers and are consistently able to make tools that fit the users, rather than forcing users to adapt to the tools. I'd love to see Keynote evolve into the KillerApp for the digital communicator. Something that embraces the interactive presentation over the didactic lecture. Something teachers, scientists, engineers, artists, and business people can use to facilitate the communication of *complex* ideas, rather than something that facilitates obfuscation and over-simplification in a sales-pitch.

If you have ideas for improvements for Keynote, pop over to Apple's Keynote Forum and add your suggestions. At the very least, more people expressing their interest should help motivate them to bring out a new version.

Keynote relies heavily on Quartz, and lots of processing power, so I doubt one could run it on an iPod. You could export the presentation as a series of still images, of course, although I'm not clear on whether the new iPod Photo slide show function allows you the option of manually advancing images.

Someone see this presentation on the go, being implemented in the rev B. iPod photo. I think so. :D

Basic transitions will be fine and can be improved upon later.

I really would like to see the ability to run Keynote shows off an iPod -- the technology exists with iPod Photo, and it'd clearly increase both Keynote and iPod Photo sales among the sales and public speaking communities, though it'd also discourage some people from buying a PowerBook to go along with their desktop Mac, provided that a $500 iPod Photo could do the job...on the other hand, if it weren't PowerPoint compatible people would buy Keynote for the convenience of being able to use something as small as an iPod to effectively display slideshows.

EDIT: I personally am a PowerPoint 2004 user when I must give a slideshow. It came with my Word and Excel academic package, what can I say?

Apple does sometimes offer upgrade versions but, as Keynote is one of their cheapest pieces of software, I'm not so sure they will. Final Cut Express 1 users could upgrade to FCE 2 for £69 (RRP of FCE: £200).

By the way, Jaguar and Panther are not upgrade versions - the $129/£99 you pay is the same whether you have the previous version of Mac OS X or whether you're jumping in from OS 9 or an even older version of OS X. (This is a major sticking point with many Mac users).

While a good idea in theory, I don't see how this offers much more advantage than just simply using the HD space of the iPod (any iPod) to transfer to a computer set up at the projector. In my experience, they always offer a laptop already plugged in for use with presentations so the iPod could just be used as an easy transfer device.

YES you can give presentations--slides exported from Keynote, PowePoint, or anything--on an iPod Photo!

I will defenitely have by portfolio and some business slides on my iPod, ready to show--with music from SoundTrack :) --at any time. No need for a laptop--just a cable and a TV!

iPod won't have the nifty animated effects, but it DOES have:

* Manual advance (as well as timed if you wish).

* Transitions (optional). What IS the iPod "transition"? I don't know. A fade would be really cool, but maybe it's just a simple wipe. I doubt it has more than one.

* Music--or any audio you care to use, for that matter. No reason a voiceover track couldn't be put into iTunes.

* Simplicity. That equals reliability and peace of mind.

* A remote control... it IS one, if you have a long enough cord :) Or get this RF remote:
http://www.engineeredaudio.com/products/remote2.html

That's sufficient for basic presentations. And the screens themselves can look as slick as they did in Keynote.

It would be cool if Keynote exported directly into iTunes/iPhoto/iPod to make this extra simple.

I only saw Jobbs use the wipe transition in his demos. If there had been more, such as his favourite - the cube transition, I'd have thought he would have been showing them off and boasting about them.
