I've experienced this issue from time to time, but nowhere frequent enough to where I would complain about it. Software of all types are imperfect systems that have bugs in one way or another.

Oh, and this problem persists in iOS 5. Just a heads up.

Maybe it's your fingers? Same happens to my father when he uses my iPad, I never get a problem.
Try moisturiser.

I really feel this is an issue with RAM allocation. Mine has done it when I have about 20+ apps open. If there's 4-5 open I don't see the issue. Free Memory was a great app for checking how much RAM was available majority of the time it was running on 9mb or less when this was occurring.

I still think it's a software bug above all else because if it was multitouch with the screen it would never unlock and the lower section of the keyboard would not respond when typing.

I think you are right. The phone acts like once it falls asleep it has difficulty waking up (like me).
Literally 2 minutes ago a friend sent me a text and I swiped to reply and wouldn't you know it...3 attempts to access SMS.

I have zero music, photos or videos on any of the aformentioned iPhones, no screen protector, no dirty or oily screen, little and usually zero apps running in background and I completely erased all content and settings last night and set up as new with no sync, no back-up, nothing.

Personally I see only a marginal speed bump at best side by side with my old 3GS and in some instantces the 3GS is faster.

I feel after iPhone 5 is out that down the road the iPhone 4 will be viewed as Apples red headed step child.

Slide to Unlock doesn't respond

Mood:

Hi All, I am facing the same problem over here. And I have extensively searched over the net for this issue, everyone seems to be suggesting the same solutions (clean hands, reset attempts, restore attempts, ...) but none seems to work. Moreover the same problem seems to be across almost all kinds of touch sensitive devices (ipod touch, iphone, ipad) across all OS.

I also realize that most of the people have reported that the problem starts randomly initially and becomes more frequent.

I have gone through the same cycle and now my iPOD touch is completely useless lying in front of me. I have tried all the advises including the ones below:

1. Try sliding it all the way to the right with clean hands (some went on to advise trying with different fingers!!!)

2. Try resetting it by holding the two buttons (power & menu) pressed at the same time for 10 seconds

3. Try restore from and older backup

.... and frustated after spending several hours in trying to recover my "comatized" ipod touch, i am on the verge of deciding not to buy any more apple devices. Why pay premium for premium bugs!!

I used to have this problem but only when I used to keep my phone in my pocket with the screen facing my leg. As soon as I turned it around to the screen faced outwards the problem went away. My supposition is that the conductivity of the skin on my leg effected the touchscreen when it lit up when a call/text/email came in and subsequently would not work properly again until the screen had been switched off and back on again.

All iOS devices are very responsive to my touch, but contrary to this, my girlfriend often has trouble getting her fingers to react to the screens. Quite weird actually, but I guess one of us has more moist fingers.
