Yet another feature that no one uses that everyone wants. Just like MMS. When it shows up...fine. But the vast majority of people won't care.

Voice dialing is actually one of the few reasons I've considered getting something else. Using a headset and not even touching the phone is incredibly easy and makes me feel safer. I used it on all of my phones before that with headsets and it's sorely missed.

I know voice dialing may seem like a 'gimmick' to a lot of people, but I also know a lot of people use it pretty seriously. I use the voice dialing on my Motorola phone ALL THE TIME, and it's a very important feature for me. I do lots of hand-free calling in the car, and for that it works really well. The voice dialing (by VoiceSignal, now Nuance) on that phone is pretty well implemented too; it has the ability to compare a spoken name, spoken by anyone, to any entry in my phone book, without having to record any 'voice names' or anything like that. I can also say a variety of other commands ("Send text to...", "Lookup...", "Go to <appname>", etc), some of which would otherwise take many keystrokes to accomplish. I love being able to make calls from my headset without having to even touch my phone, which could be in my pocket or buried in my backpack or wherever.

This is just like the people who are saying, "who'd ever use cut and paste on a phone anyway?!?" I'm surprised at how many people make arguments that amount to "it's not important to me, so it must not be important to anyone". If people are wishing it was there, maybe they actually do want or need it, even if you don't find it useful.

While Voice dialing is not built-in on the iPhone, there are many 3rd party apps that enable it. One of which, I use quite often, is Say Who Lite (which is free) or Say Who, which works surprisingly well. I have found that it works faster when you assign nicknames to your contacts, otherwise you may have to clarify which contact you want to call.

Oh cool, I never knew that. I just left the voice dialing frenzy alone and didn't even bother asking bout it. I agree though, it is quite useful. Will try this one.

I think that the #1 arguement for Voice Dialing is people who wear GLOVES!! I remember when I was in Long Island at christmas and walking around outside. Dialing and answering was REALLY hard with gloves. EVERYTHING was a pain with gloves..

there are many free apps to download that implement this feature VERY well.

i.e Vlingo and SayWHO

Yes I know but you still have to look at the screen and whatnot in order to open that app. Now if those programs were able to run in the background + work with a bluetooth headset then we're talking business;)

BluAnt V1

I use voice dialing all the time, it's just so convenient. I missed it so much that I got a BluAnt V1 bluetooth headset, it supports a couple of numbers I can call without having to take the phone out of the pocket. I love it so much that I even try using commands when on headphones...

I find the tolerance in this forum to be so refreshing. If we want a feature you don't then we're stupid? I think MMS is stupid. On the scale of missing features, bluetooth voice dialing ranks infinitely higher than MMS. I'm guessing you've never used it.

Lack of voice dialing is the only reason I don't own an iphone right now. One day your state may require hands-free calling in a car and then you will cry to your mama.

So anyway, what is the status of this? Someone told me that none of the third party apps for voice dialing work over bluetooth. Is that correct? Is it added to 3.0 yet?

thanks. patiently waiting to purchase an iphone.

Yea....

So am I jitx... so am I... :(

Most likely people that consider voice dialing un-useful are kids that never drove a car and had to dial and redial numbers while on the road. Just logically think what's more convenient:

1) a. Click a button on the bluetooth headset
b. Say the name of the person you want to call.

2) a. Take out the phone from your pocket
b. Click the "Home button" and swipe your finger to unlock it
c. Enter the pass code
d. Click the "Phone" icon
e. Click Contacts/Favorites/Recent
f. Find the name of the person you want to dial
g. Click on the name of that person
h. Click on the number you want to dial (if you are dialing from "Contacts")
i. Do all of that while still looking at the road!!!

Ummm..... Does it take a genius to figure it out which one is easier?

iPhone is a great device no doubt there, but voice dialing is one of the features that even my 6 year old Motorola could do and I really miss it! :(

This may be nice for driving, but normally, who is going to sit there talking to their iPhone? Especially if you don't want everyone else hearing the number you're trying to call.

Don't you talk to your iPhone while you are speaking to someone? Anyways, this can't be anymore stupid looking than people speaking into a Bluetooth headset, looking like they are talking to themselves - hand motions and all.

As for people knowing who you are calling, yeah, I guess. But, usually this is a feature you would use while you can't use your hands - like while driving. And I don't think you would be driving around with someone who wouldn't know who you are trying to call in the first place.

I agree with the OP, Voice dialing, and other voice commands is essential
for the iPhone.
And for you posters who think voice dialing is saying the number into the phone, pretty funny.
You say the contacts name, like Lisa or Home or whatever you like and it dials.

Actually guys you just say the name of the person, not the actual phone number. For example: "Call John Apleseed" and then if you have more the one number stored for that person you say for example: "mobile" or "home" depending on the number to call. I also use this at home, beats actually picking up the phone and looking for that person.

Any of you guys still looking for voice dialing with iPhone I suggest BlueAnt V1 or the newly released Q1, it doesn't support calling every number you have saved but you can set a list of favorites or most frequently called numbers.
I own a V1 and truly in love with it! :D

I'd wait on any BT headsets till the new iPhone is out. With the new BT functionality, we're likely to see new headsets as well for streaming music. And if Voice Command is there, you may see voice dialing as well.

Yea Say Who is a voice dialer but you still have to pick up the phone, find the icon and push that button to use it while your driving. May as well just double click your home button with your favorite numbers in it and pick a name and it will dial it and then the headset activates.

Thats what i do. Id prefer voice dial too so maybe 3.0 will have it.

I agree that voice dialing is useful, though I only use it in limited situations. My iPhone (from my first generation to my current 3G, with no hacking or jailbreaking) has always worked with the BT system in my car through which I can dial by voice alonel. I can either ask the car to dial a saved contact by name (I have saved the contact's name and number in advance), or I can dictate numbers for it to dial and my iPhone will comply without requiring me to slide to unlock or make any other inputs. The difference here is that my car is seen as a hands-free device, not a BT headset, and therefore using a different BT profile that allows different interactions. My iPhone's contacts list also uploads to my car so that I can scroll through it on the radio's display.

If voice dialing via a BT headset is enabled in the future, I don't think I'll use it all. I rarely use my BT headset as it is since I don't need to use it in my car and if I have my iPhone in my hand, I'll just find the number and dial by hand. I can see how this would be very useful to others who are in cars without built-in systems or those who simply cannot spare their hands while working to make and receive calls.

Correct, it would be a BT hands-free not headset as you say. But not all hands-free devoces provide all those features. My car, unfortunately, does not. Interesting that yours is so complete. I had not heard of one like it. I'm curious which car, or which BT add-on if it's not factory?

It's a BMW with the factory built-in Bluetooth package. BMW was quick to claim iPhone compatibility with their BT systems right away and I have absolutely no complaints about it.

Mine too. It works perfectly, now.

Had to wait for 2.2.1 for the 3G be be compatible with my '04 5-Series though:(
