Still no 120hz Safari scolling with the MacOS 12.1 RC

How can apple still not sort this out, safari version 15.2 in macOS 12.1 RC is still choppy scrolling like my old intel iMac, this MacBook Pro 2021 showed at the keynote smooth scrolling with promotion so why has apple stopped it, a month after and nothing, this isn't right

Then return it if you're not happy. Then you haven't paid anything.
 
I don't know if we are talking about the same thing, but laggy/choppy scrolling in Safari on Monterey on my M1 is driving me crazy, almost to the point of switching browsers. Doesn't happen on Chrome but then I miss keychain... *sigh*

Enable Develop menu in Safari.

Then... uncheck Develop > Experimental Features > GPU Process: Canvas Rendering

You're welcome. It looks like Apple is throttling the GPU too much in Safari during these use cases and it's causing choppy scrolling. This is especially noticeable in Low Power Mode, even on M1 Pro/Max.

Maybe they haven't tried it? :)

Scrolling in Edge on the 144 Hz display on a Lenovo gaming laptop we have at work is really nice – to me it feels like one gets ”closer to the computer” when interacting with it compared to using a display with 60 Hz.

But maybe the majority doesn't care. But don't agree on the vast majority. :D

I took the steps that you mention last week, and while the scrolling is improved, it’s still not 100%. I figure this is just a stop-gap until Apple enables the feature as advertised.

Yeah. I'm fairly certain Apple can achieve perfectly smooth 120Hz scrolling in all apps on the new MacBooks, but it'll probably burn through battery life like nothing.

Even on the iPad and iPhone, animations are throttled to basically half the actual scrolling framerate, so say... if scrolling is at 120Hz, animations are at 60Hz. It's very noticeable. Safari on Mac doesn't seem to have this frameskip mechanism yet, and it may require some major rework of Safari for them to achieve this.

So for now I think we can only achieve smooth scrolling by doing the above (Develop...) plus limiting the refresh rate to 60Hz.

120hz does work on safari though in the RC. You can even use quartz debug with xcode to see the franes as you scroll. They hover around 110. Its not perfect yet but its there. Never use testufo to see frames.

Pro motion wouldn't work well anyways, in typical apple fashion, its all about branding the product. It has been shown the display has a poor response time, which can actually be demonstrated by swiping through windows or scrolling when its black text on white background. Its a less smooth experience when compared to my 2018 15".

are you scrolling via the trackpad or using a mouse? If so what kind of mouse?
 
Absolutely unacceptable that after the first major update it STILL will not work as advertised. Might as well be a 60hz screen.
