There's a discount in the UK. It's nothing compared to the usual Educational discounts on Apple computers but it still helps. For the iPad 3 it ranges from £11.40 for the base iPad 3 (~2.86%) up to £19.40 for the top end iPad 3 (~2.94%). The other potential benefit is that there's a similar small benefit on 2 years Applecare but there is also a 3 year Applecare option that isn't available outside of the Educational store.

I think the text book apps and store need to be fleshed out before they truly target schools. And I feel, down the line, they will offer them in bulk prices to schools, if they're not already. Has your school tried contacting Apple?

What you're asking for is the educational discount bump so YOU can have one cheaper, right? Maybe some of your students? Again, if I am wrong, contact Apple. They may have an unspoken policy right now.

Lastly, I love how you equate them not giving discounts to schools as "greed". Do you feel this way about every company that doesn't give a discount?

That's the least they could do, but why not make it a general rule ?

Thanks for the advice, I'll do it - but the objective here is that is becomes a "spoken policy".

Absolutely. Apple is top on my list though, knowing their current profits for this tablet.

The US Air Force just paid $520 for their bulk-order of iPad 2's (32g WiFi only models). They bought 18,000 of them for a total of about $9MM.

Get a bunch of your teacher friends together and you can likely get the same discount!

On the new one ? I doubt it.

What? That is absurd. Because a company is successful but does not offer an educational discount they are "greedy"? Especially when said company probably does more for the educational system already than some of the highest profitable companies combined? What kind of skewed entitled logic is that? I hope you're not passing this along to your students.

You plus 17,999 buyers, money in hand.....I'm pretty sure you could get a discount on even the new iPad 3.

Reading your post I have the impression that you want to present Apple as the Mother Teresa of electronics.

I don't understand your basic point - so if they're not greedy, what could be the reason they're not proposing this discount for iPads, whereas they do it for other "educational" products ? Because of the lack of margin ? Doubtful.

Why would you infer that? Where have I made them out to be some type of god-like company? I was just merely stating the facts. Please don't try to downplay that by shifting the direction to knock me in some way.

If you don't understand the point, I don't know how else to present it to you. Again, they do offer educational discounts already. Just not yet on the product YOU want. Who is the greedy one?

I also feel it is greedy to EXPECT it because you're part of the system. Why are you not spending your own money on it at full price? Are you greedy?

No one is saying Apple isn't greedy, they don't even have a charitable foundation. But to say they're greedy just because they don't offer educational discounts is absurd. They tout it as an educational tool for...marketing!
They're not offering discounts because it's a new product and they're a BUSINESS which is driven by PROFIT. You're not entitled to a discount just because you're a teacher.

Did I hear somewhere that the teachers are supposed the get the apple? ;)

I'm a teacher in NY and have considered getting an ipad 2 for use in the classroom. A few teachers did get ipads through a grant, but the grants have been frozen for now with no funds available. Either way, I want one of my own as the school bought one would not be my property to use for other things.

I know there is no Apple discount as of now, but where is the best place to buy a new ipad 2? Prices are all over the place; is there a website that tracks the prices? I'm off to Google to check, but if anyone know of a good price online or retail, please share!

Yeah edu discount would be great, but apple doesn't need to discount them for edu cats to buy them. Students and teachers already love the ipad at full price.

Keep tracking eBay, prices are changing pretty dynamically. Either way you can browse gumtree if you're okay with used models. For now, the best deal is heading straight to Apple Store and grab one for 399$.

Interesting price cuts. Is there a way to get in on one of these deals? Maybe through a friend who works there/ one of these places? Or are they only OFFICIAL iPads.. not allowing employees to buy some?

I think Apple gives a lot of corporations or volume purchasers around a 10% discount on the iPad.

So no
discount for individual. But if your school district orders say 1000 iPads, Apple will cut them a deal.

The federal government got a 10% volume discount on iPad purchases recently.

I got discount on my 32GB iPad 3 through D&AD.

Apples to teachers ! ;)

The majority wants the discount, but there's a lot of disgruntled students too, why I'm not surprised ?

Anyone can become a member of D&AD. To use my Apple Store discount I just clicked on link to the Apple store in the members area :)

I think its funny that theres people in here saying no to a discount because its stupid etc etc and down voting people who want the discount.

If the discount existed you'd take it.... and to people who are saying its only 500 etc... thats a lot of money to a student... who probably doesn't work as there in full time education... they have course fees to pay, living costs, travel costs etc.

35 quid for lowest membership. 5-10% discount apparently. Does it, will it work for iPad?
Does it use some kind of refer or parameter passing to add discount when directing to Apple store.

The discount also works on iPads. I used it for my 32GB WiFi model being delivered tomorrow. There is some minor D&AD branding in the Apple Store referal URL and in the shop too. Other than that the store looks stock!

There's a lot of frustrated lads here who obviously left school dissatisfied with the system, and like to blame the teachers for their failures.

Or, there are some fanatics that don't support Apple being critisized in any manner, like the guy who went after me because I used the word "greedy".

Third possibility, we have many Apple employees following orders, and the current orders are - no discount.

Whatever. Keep flinging insults. I never 'went after you'. I just don't agree with your reasoning. God forbid that, right?

I of course would welcome a discount. Who wouldn't? But I don't *expect* one because of the position that *I* chose. Or the amount of money that I make. And I certainly wouldn't call any company greedy because they don't offer discounts. I guess I just don't feel that entitlement that some do.

I am in no way an Apple fanatic.

And yes, I am a student.

Apparently you don't understand supply and demand.
