Apparently you don't understand the Macbook air is very popular, and yet there's a discount.

1) It's way more expensive and the profit margin is higher.

2) They had the discount before it became that popular, they can't just take it away.

3) It's a computer, you can actually do all of the typing and schoolwork on it.

4) An iPad is luxury not a necessity for learning, but a computer is.

5) iPad 2 costs apple $300 for apple to make and they sell them for $399

6) The discount would be around $15 if they did one

7) If you're that cheap just go buy one of those $100 android tablets

Agreed that it's more expensive, not sure about the margin.

2) They had the discount before it became that popular, they can't just take it away.

Specious argument. A discounted product has to be unpopular in the first place ??

3) It's a computer, you can actually do all of the typing and schoolwork on it.

Right, but isn't the iPad the future of computers ? ;)

4) An iPad is luxury not a necessity for learning, but a computer is.

Not to Apple, and certainly not to many people preferring to buy an iPad instead of a traditional laptop. There's a difference between "learning" and "typing". Oh, yes, and go tell a bunch of kids from school carrying their bags full of textbooks that the iPad is a luxury...

5) iPad 2 costs apple $300 for apple to make and they sell them for $399

iPad 2 is old, we're talking about the new, it's more $310 sold 629 (margin of 51%) for the 16G LTE.

6) The discount would be around $15 if they did one

For the MBA it's $949 instead of 999 = 5%, so it's more $20. Not a lot certainly, but like I said, there's an ethical problem. (see posts above)

7) If you're that cheap just go buy one of those $100 android tablets
Typical fanboy reply. See my answer at your 6. And you're actually insulting all the people using the educational discounts.

There's a lot of frustrated lads here who obviously left school dissatisfied with the system, and like to blame the teachers for their failures.

Or, there are some fanatics that don't support Apple being critisized in any manner, like the guy who went after me because I used the word "greedy".

Third possibility, we have many Apple employees following orders, and the current orders are - no discount.

I can't believe you are a "teacher." It is the responsibility of a teacher to do exactly that -- teach. If a student has "failures," it is your job to help that student turn around and succeed. I'm 21, and I graduated high school and am now in college. I don't have kids, but if I did, I would be even more disgusted than I already am at the fact you are actually a "teacher."

You must not forget that Apple is a business, and they must make money, because that's what businesses do. Just because they have a lot of money in the bank, doesn't mean they should stop making money and start giving their money away (even if in the form of a discount). Apple can give education discounts on Macs because I imagine their profit margins are much higher on Macs than it is on iPads.

Of course, if there were a discount on iPads like there are for Macs, I would take advantage of it -- who wouldn't, if they were eligible. But I still think you are ridiculous to think that Apple owes something to you, just because of the field in which you work.

As far as your last point goes: are you suggesting that Apple employees break the rules and give discounts anyway? Don't you have rules in your classroom that you expect your students to follow?

You make true teachers look bad. By that, I mean people who actually are doing what they are doing because they care about the betterment of all students, and don't complain that they don't get a discount on something that you would probably use more for yourself than for the benefit of your students.

Corporate discount I'm seeing right now averages $10 off.

Apple education discount when I went to University in the early 90s was around 40% off.

I think I got $20 off. Was still a nice surprise when I remembered to order it through the EPP site, as that was the only one that was working for me.

Wow. You're obsessed with that movie. I am starting to wonder if you're actually a teacher or not.

I am doubting it myself. This "teacher" can spend all day online posting about iPads? On a school day? And not just today either?

Yeah...

So far, despite the attacks, the "invisible majority" speaks for the educational discount. And that's all that matters.

Talking about "discounts", I shall discount the insulting posts from failed students / rich students / students lacking a sense of humor from now on.

Or you know, since you're already ignoring your job to post on message boards, you can take some of that free time and get your masters and stop expecting handouts or insulting people because they have money.

Just a bit of advice. Take care, "teech".

Students are not supposed to study ?

I finished my classes early morning and have been home since. Posting during my free time. Not on someone else's dime, neglecting minds, while complaining about discounted toys.

Unless, you know, I modeled my life around a crappy Cameron Diaz movie.

Do you understand that with such attitude you're ruining your parents efforts to provide you with a decent future? That all the money they've invested in you is lost? Do you realize that "free time" does not start when classes are over?

See, we teachers never give up on people like you.

I am 33, going back for second degree. Paid for my education the first time and currently doing so now.

When I am at work, I work hard. So I can afford the things that I want in life without someone handing them to me.

Probably been said but in the UK they do educational discount on them, at least on the online store for higher education establishments :). Not much though (especially if you get the higher end ones!).

Good for you.

Write it off

You should be able to write off the iPad as an expense for your teaching. That should save you a decent percentage. Additionally, if you order it from a site such as B & H Photo, you will save on the sales tax and shipping costs. Just an idea.

Finally managed to get it for free from my school, as a pedagogical tool.
