In all honesty, I get a little offended every time people insist that the plus-sized iPhones make their iPads redundant...

I know where you're coming from, even as an iPad Mini user! There's quite a noticible difference even between a plus sized iPhone and a mini sized iPad.

There's definitely nothing wrong with appreciating something worse for less money, but it is strange that he finds the iPad Air redundant, yet the first gen iPad is perfect for Netflix.

Worse? How so? I happen to have the 12.9" Pro, but I still love going back to my iPad 1 because I like some of the things iOS 5 does better than iOS 9. Personal preference does not make anything worse than anything else. (Except when talking about Android.. BLECH!) =)

I still have a 32GB iPad 1 around that I let my 3 year old use from time to time. I tried trading it and my 64GB iPad 1 in on Amazon, but accidentally traded it in as a 16GB version and it was rejected. At that time I think they were offering $70 for the 64GB, and $50 for the 16GB. I don't remember how much they were offering for the 32GB at that time. Now they are only offering $35 for the 32GB so I don't think it is worth trading it in, I'd rather keep it around for my kid so she can break it instead of my 3rd Gen or my wife's 9.7" Pro.

Pretty much the only things it is good for are email, iMessage, iTunes Videos, and Safari (but I have safari hid with parental controls right now). I was able to download a few old version of little kid apps that still work on IOS 5, but not very many. I'm not sure if you can still download an old version of Netflix that will work on it, I need to try that. I do know that Youtube doesn't work anymore.

Even though this has nothing to do with using the iPad for one specific app, what does iOS 5 do better on a first gen iPad than the iPad Air?

I can't speak for temna, but for me the lack of animation delays make a huge difference.

Even though my iPad 1 has ancient specs, much of the navigation around the OS actually feels faster than it does on the iPad Air 1.

$120? I wasn't even able to give away my old iPad 1. I couldn't find any takers for it, even free.

I have to admit I didn't bother with eBay though. My mistake. Will have to give that a try. It has a small dent, but heck, it's worth a try :)

For free??? I'd take it for free! (I'd even pay for shipping!)

I still have my original iPad 1. It's mostly a display device (sitting with my original iPhone, iPod, and Newton Message Pads 100 and upgraded 2000).

I still have iOS 5 on the iPad 1 - it's not bad, but I wouldn't say it's "peppy" or even as "peppy" as iOS 9 on the iPad Air.

Mine lagged a lot on iOS 4 and I didn't even keep it long enough to play with iOS 5.

Well, I tried to give it away to my mother, family members and a few friends. Now I think I may try my luck on eBay.

Have a my wife's iPad 2 and and iPad 3 I need to list as well :)

I felt the same way when I charged up my original iPhone from 2007 the other day. What an awesome device. Feels awesome in the hand. I had to use it as my phone when I was waiting for my iPhone 6 to be delivered in 2014. That device is crazy slow by today's standards. It was a frustratin 2 weeks waiting for the 6+ to deliver.
I was just going to say the same thing about the original iPhone! I was using mine the other day and it just feels good to hold. The 3G/S was also a nice device, but something about that flat brushed aluminum on the original is really nice. It is just about unusable though. Even Safari really struggles with most web pages and few apps still work.

As someone who purchased iPad 1 on the release day I would kill myself if I had to use that device again :)

You may want to check out Amazon's trade in value. I just traded an iPad 2 in there, and will probably trade in my iPad 3 soon. They might not pay quite as much as you would get on eBay or Craigslist, but they pay more than most of the other places and it is super easy to do.

Thanks! I appreciate the tip. Do you have to trade in on another device through Amazon?

iPad 2 user (cellular), still running iOS 7. Works perfectly but a couple weeks ago I purchased an iPad Mini 4 (also cellular) because I wanted the smaller size. What blew me away with the mini is that I can see the screen easily in direct sunlight, which is perfect for my needs as I use it on the water (in a waterproof case) for GPS and weather info. Plan on keeping my iPad 2; it just no longer travels with me 24/7.

I don't use the iPad 1 but until now I was on iOS 5.1.1 on the iPad 3. Runs super fast compared to the Ipad 1 on the same thing. However iOS 5 doesn't support all the apps so I upgraded to iOS 6 by finding and buying an iPad Mini 1 with it. A bit slower (notice some lag) with the decrease in RAM but it actually works fine for me. As long as I'm not downloding 200 things at once from the iTunes it's completely fine!

yep..ipad 1 very useful as an external monitor for retina Macbook....twomonusb gave new life for my 5yr old iPad 1

impressive.. no lag / the iOS duet display app was no go as it required at least ios 7

iPad 2 (16gb) user here with iOS 8.3. My mother gave it to me since upgrading to an iPad mini (Retina Display/A7).

After nearly five years, battery life is like brand new. Since it only has 10gb available since she doesn't remember her Apple password. Wanted to sell it but it is practically flawless and battery didn't seem to degrade at all. I get over 10 hrs of video playback and long idle time. I might charge it once per week or sometimes once or twice per month.

Charges slow (4 hrs) and you see some lag while scrolling. Can't connect to Wi-Fi networks easily and browsing on it is pretty bad. I only use it to watch episodes of The Travel Channel, G4 Icons, Bob Ross' Joy of Painting full episodes, The Three Stooges, and I Love Lucy. Helps me sleep at night. Nice device. Guess will keep it just for that.

Is there anyone else out there that's still using their iPad 1?

My wife uses my old iPad 1 daily as a reader. The battery in it is losing steam and it tends to crash with a good number of applications, but it's lived a better life than my iPad4. Honestly, I think I liked the original iPad better than the iPad4. It might have been a bit on the heavy side, but it was easier to hold securely than the slippery little wedge shaped devices that it later became.

Did anybody ever offer a third party 30-pin camera attachment? That was the one thing lacking from my 1st gen iPad, and I was surprised one never materialized during the first three years when I was looking.

I know there are Lightning cameras now. But I don't recall any 30-pin cameras. Was the 1G iPad not capable of supporting an external camera input? Did Apple restrict this ability to promote upgrades?

Kudos for still being content with the iPad 1. My investment account would be much fatter if I could be similarly content.

My ipad 1 is getting nearly useless now. Most apps require a much newer version of iOS to install, so you are very limited by that right off the bat. For the ones that have an older version to download, they crash alot. I find surfing the web with it to be excruciating because it constantly crashes.

What it DOES still do well:
Netflix still runs like a champ
Locally loaded videos / movies works great
A few games still work ok like Angry Birds and Candy Crush
GPS signal still works great (thinking about repurposing as a dedicated, bad-ass, 10 inch GPS device in car)

Now here's what I don't understand, so may apps and browsing the internet do not work hardly at all, but Infinity Blade, a complex 3D game that was trend setting in its day for technological advancement, works absolutely perfectly. How can that be? Surfing Yahoo crashes the device left and right, but a 3D FPS game runs perfectly with wonderful graphics. Go figure!

Optimization, I'd suspect. Web sites are so bogged down these days (especially the ads/trackers) and aren't at all made with the iPad 1 in mind. It truly is an abysmally underpowered device.

I find the iPad Air 1 is also a bit slow though when it comes to web browsing.

Yup, so true. Web browsing (mostly Tumblr) is the reason I upgraded from the Air 1 to a Pro 9.7.
