in many ways it is the best phone ever. However excluding the screen size coming from a plus, which is personal preference, there are many things that make it a phone I can't live with. Primarily Face ID. It is not seamless, it IS slower that Touch ID and it doesn't work in certain situations that I took for granted before with Touch, such as waking up in the morning, having to get your face/phone in the perfect angle etc, im not saying it doesn't unlock, but it's not quick or smooth in those scenarios. For some people this won't be an issue, but for me I cannot stand it, so much so that today it's annoying me so much I considered chucking it in the bin.

I have the same problems with Face ID. Especially like you said, when I am just waking up and my face is half sunk in my pillow and trying to unlock my phone. No big deal but those are the times Touch ID worked better. I’m keeping my X though, the pros definitely outweighs the cons. Especially how it looks, just an elegant device.

negative press?? you mean the people who didnt like it originally when it was announced but bought it anyway just to say they still dont like it? people will complain about anything... "i went back to my iphone 8" like cool good for you.. shoulda never bought the x in the first place. i still cant believe people are bitching about the notch. i love it... that space is normally barely used.. now they have it separate and actually separate control center from notifications.

I’m still waiting for my preorder in late Nov. My biggest concerns from the reviews is the notch. Seems many people don’t like it and I use my phone to watch a lot of videos. So yes, that does make me pause for a moment.

The notch is a complete non-issue for me. Even with video. I also like that is had functionality for marking swipe gestures.

This has no bearing on what you will actually experience
Sure they do.

Just take the antenna issue, or bending problem with the plus phones. I think a review that highlights what they feel is a negative certainly can have a bearing on people.

It's not enough to love it and keep it and use it as my daily phone, the size bothers me coming from a Plus but that's personal. Also just taken the case off I had on since the moment it came out the box, and can see the steel is so soft that it's scratched more than what would polish out already, crazy.

Understandable. I never owned a plus model so I’m not losing any screen real estate with the X.

Ha - I read all the posts (mostly negative it seems) and after receiving my X yesterday all I can say is that the X is a truly awesome device.
I think a nice word to describe it is ‘sublime’.
So yeah - read all the negative comments on the threads and when you get yours the expectation might be so low that actually using the phone will completely blow you away lol

So far the only negative review I have is that I preordered at 7:30 am through Apple, AT&T upgrade program, with option unavailable to pick up at any store. Ship date of Dec 11-20, now Dec 1-8! While people who walked into carrier stores 10/27 to preorder got their phone 11/3 and people walking into stores on 11/3 getting phones they didn't even preorder. My order is still in process with Dec ship date and yes I am salty about it. I understand the high demand and the limited number released to stores, but why not give the option to pick up at a local store when I preordered? Not really a review, just a rant. lol > me whining<

All the forum posts of people saying they can't stand the X and they're returning it for an 8+, it's got me thinking. These people are "resistant to change" and are not pioneers/trend setters. In a year or so, the iPhone 8/+ will look so outdated. All phones will have the style of the X. And when that's the new norm, then these people will love it, and that's all they will like until the next "popular" style is out. The exact same thing happened when the iPhone 5 was released.

Don't know. I'm liking mine a bit. It takes time, like everything.

Reviews mean very little. Look at Tomatoes reviews for movies, makes no sense.

Maybe I am just being stupid, but I don't understand the comments regarding the screen size compared with a plus. The X has a bigger screen than a plus so can anyone please explain why people are complaining about the screen size and "lack of real estate"

Categorically not true, I love change, the package of this phone is amazing, just the functionality of it doesn't work very well FOR ME. I love the latest and newest tech, isn't that why anyone spends hours working out the best strategy for getting a launch day phone or similar gadgets? If the phone worked better for me, I would love it, it is a very premium feeling beautiful device

No it doesn't, it has a bigger headline size, ie it's bigger diagonally but much narrower than a plus, hence iOS uses compact mode and you lose a fair bit of screen real estate. I think the figure is approximately 2.6% smaller than the plus in terms of area. Edit: it's not just about the 2.6%, its the aspect ratio change that makes it feel much smaller in real life, coming from a plus that is. However if it was just the screen, then for me I could learn to live with it, at least until they release a bigger one, but with Face ID, it just doesn't work for me reliably

Is there every a year they don’t give negative views about Apple look at the Samsung ad for example the iPhone X is better than I expected p.s

I actually like the phone far more than I thought I would. Can’t really find too much to complain about.

lol it doesn’t change colors as easy as someone posted either. And coming from a plus phone for 3 years this iPhone is a pleasure to use and hold.

Having so much fun with it. Camera is great, screen looks incredible, it’s quick and smooth when scrolling etc.

In fact pretty much all the reviews I have read praised the phone. I would have returned it if I didn’t like it but I don’t even miss Touch ID anymore.

I appreciate the negative press because I want to know the potential downsides of buying such an expensive product. As long as the review is fair and unbiased -- and I actually don't quite trust reviews that are a little too gushy.

It seems that people are a little sensitive about any criticism of something they own or wish to buy. It's like they have their own propaganda machine going in their head.

I understand, thank you for the explanation

The gesture based UI is probably my favorite thing about the X. Everything is so fluid and works really well. Biggest change for me since 2007.

"How do you feel about the negative press??"

I think reactions have been on par with previous years, certainly no worse. Personally I think the iPhone X has been very well received overall.

I am happy with mine, that said I don't think its worth £999.00, nor would any phone be. In my opinion pricing has now gone beyond what a phone, ANY phone, should cost.

There are some terribly misinformed click bait articles out there though. I read one today with the headline "Apple admits iPhone X screen fault" and then goes on to describe Apples explanation of characteristics of OLED screens. Terrible reporting, and as you can imagine, there were thousands of comments from rabbid Android owners absolutely losing their **** with joy. Ignorance is bliss they say :)

I believe Apple has created a device for each market. They are really good at telling what people want/need, also at creating things that people didn't know they needed.

For example, I got an iPad when it came out. I was thrilled by the innovation and the technology involved in the iPad, but a few weeks after, I realized I wasn't using it at all. I still love the idea of an iPad, but haven't found a use for it. I would love to be an artist only to justify the purchase of an iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil, but I'm not, not even close.

This year Apple is clearly pushing people into going to an Apple Store and try the iPhone X before paying for it, I'm sure that is the reason for the online orders to be so restrained. They know is not for everyone.

I'm an early adopter and a tech lover, I like to spend my money in new things (not only from Apple), so I pre-ordered an iPhone X. I don't care what other people say, I prefer to have my own opinion based on my experience.

Sure they do.

Just take the antenna issue, or bending problem with the plus phones. I think a review that highlights what they feel is a negative certainly can have a bearing on people.

My point was more that nothing like that has happened this time. The "negative press" is more whether or not people like the notch, whether or not people preferred a physical home button, whether or not people like a thinner screen than the plus... all of which is up to the user, one may be a negative to the reviewer but could someone else's favourite feature.

I haven’t seen any negative reviews. All of the ones I’ve read are favourable overall with many of them explicitly stating it’s the best iPhone to date. If anything, it just seems to be the price tag that’s raising eyebrows and stopping an all out recommendation.

In any case, all I was really looking for was commentary on how well FaceID works in everyday use. In that arena, even though the overall tone of most articles is positive, there are offputting comments.

The Face ID is one of the best things about it. I like it a lot more than Touch ID. The Face ID makes it seamless. I just pick up the phone and start using it. Haven’t seen the password entry screen once. With Touch ID I used to get a lot of bad reads and times when it would say you have to enter your code in order to use Touch ID again. And the size of the phone makes it feel better in the hand. The speakers are definitely louder than on the 7. And I like the gestures. They are very natural and an improvement over the button, which was a big waste of space. The display is narrower but somehow not something that would make me miss the plus. I don’t get the feeling of the screen being smaller than what I was used to.
To me it was a worthwhile upgrade. Already packed up the old phone for fedex to pick up tomorrow.
