He filed a police report. I know it's gone forever, but man the things I'd do to be able to track that SOB down. He doesn't have insurance, just AppleCare+ thru the iPhone upgrade program. Is he now going to have to pay that phone off and buy a new one? Any chance Apple will supply a new one? I know that's probably a long shot

The chance are real good you do not want to meet the person who stold the phone. Be mad for a while but sooner or later you need to replace it and. Move on with life. Leaving an expensive phone unattended is asking for it.

Sorry for your loss.

It is a long shot. But have him go into an Apple Store and explain the situation, and see what his options are. Apple is notorious for having excellent customer service and taking care of their customers. The replaced my 6s plus when I broke the screen free of charge and I didn't have apple care.

Not to be that guy, but I don't think you understand what the word 'notorious' means. The word is used to describe someone or something that is well known for unfavorable or bad reasons.

Just a friendly heads-up.

Don't really need any life lessons from you people. Working at a desk where you have chargers, docks etc and leaving your phone isn't uncommon. You usually don't expect someone to jack your phone. Man, I wish we were all as smart as a couple of you. I'll relay the info tho, maybe he'll never leave his computer in his office in which he conducts business on, either.
I know you don't... your brother already taught you one. Good luck to you both.

I'm sorry that some jerk stole your brother's phone. Not 7+, but one of my family member's brand new SE got stolen from school locker room recently. We immediately turned on lost mode, and the thief did turn it in once but turned off immediately. We went to the location but no luck, it was a parking lot at a gas station. I think Apple should add a functionality that takes pictures from both front and back cameras and upload or email photos to iCloud when lost mode is turned on and it's turned back on.

We ended up just buying another one as it didn't turn up after a week, and as neither Apple Care or our credit card covered theft. I also looked into iPhone insurance programs for the new phone but none really covers theft or has high deductibles.

I wish I had better suggestions, but I certainly understand what your brother is going through. Hope Apple would give him a good discount for a new phone.

The carrier will put the IMEI on the 'blacklist' so it can't be activated. I sold my old iPhone 5s to an international buyer and he claimed he never received it. Since it could not be tracked once it left the US, eBay sided with him and i was out $250. I take comfort in the fact that at least it can't be used by whoever has it now.

I wouldn't take much comfort in that. A blacklisted imei is only done by carrier or region. So your phone might not work on some US network but the international buyer that pulled a scam on you its enjoying his phone in his country and works fine on any other international wireless carrier.

Generally you have 30 days from purchase date to add insurance through your carrier. Add it online, wait 2 days(depends on insurance company) then file an insurance claim.

Nice illegal insurance fraud advise but you can't add carrier insurance on a device financed through Apple.

But in the end game, you win, being the iPhone cannot be activated. Awesome Ending to your story. Well done.

How did you figure he wins?
He got scammed and didn't get paid for the device and paid for international shipping out of his own pocket and his phone is gone.
And 99% the scammer is using his phone with no problem since imei blacklisting only covers a few US carriers and the scammer is not inside the US.

Since it's not uncommon then tell him to keep doing it. After a few thousands $ wasted he might learn that people can and will steal anything.

Not if you disable the control center when device is locked :)

That's a key tip... I bet 98% of users don't do that... but with rest-finger-to-unlock, I think everyone should disable Control Centre on lock screen - just gives you that little more protection with very little extra hassle. In fact Apple should disable it on the lock screen by default if they care about securing their users phones.

This is why I don't use applecare because they don't cover lost or stolen phones. I buy insurance through my carrier.

With this said, I think iOS should have an option if find my iPhone is active. Needs to have passcode before being able to turn it off..
Probably me not understanding you correctly, however my iphone 7 plus has find my iphone active, but I can press and hold power button to then slide to power off on my phone even when its locked??

Well if he's like 99% of iPhone users his phone is locked with a password and NO ONE can use it. It's a paperweight...

I think he is saying that once the phone is in Lost mode, there should be an option to make it impossible to turn off, so that its location can always be tracked (until the battery dies).

As it is, all a person has to do is turn the phone off and it disappears. Honestly, Find My Phone is more for finding a misplaced phone than a stolen one.

The phone is gone forever. Harsh and expensive lesson learned. Never leave your iPhone outside of your pocket or within arm's reach in your line of sight. Though the thief can't actually use the phone due to Activation Lock, he can easily sell it for parts. The screen alone on the 7 Plus is worth around $350 right now.

This is not targeted at you personally, more the sentiment in this thread. I am surprised that people would feel uncomfortable leaving a phone on their desk at work. I work in an office in IT, and I leave phones and iPads at my desk all day long. I would think its reasonable to expect people not to steal company property off my desk.

Still waiting for the day that Apple decides to (hardware installment) or some app developer is able to, create an app (mimicking)

When someone grabs the iPhone for the owner via watch to press a button and send an electronic shock to to whoever is holding it.

Only works when u see someone stealing the phone ob

Nope

I've seen a girl that all the managers loved because she had that charming personality

Imagine their shock when they saw the footage of her stealing their $$$ when no one was looking

But I also believe op mentioned outsiders aka customers? I could be wrong

But I wouldn't trust anyone fully

I don't think that's reasonable.
People might steal no matter what the place or setting is.
You want to risk leaving a $1000 device laying around then go for it.

It sounds like most people are talking in Retail, maybe it's different there. In an office, I know all my office mates, we all like our jobs, and nobody is out trying to steal things off of desks.

Work in IT myself and leave my phone on my desk and my wallet as well. There are many high dollar items sitting around and have not gone missing. Then again, I work at a place that is not your typical 9-5 job. People are really honest and look out here.

With that said, your phone is gone. It will be used for parts or the person who stole it realizes it's of no use, will probably trash it or try to sell it. Keep an eye out on find my iPhone and maybe it might pop up. However, if it's off already, someone knows what they're doing.

Good luck.

Thank you, glad it's not just me.

No, why would Apple supply him a new one? Apple was not the one that left the phone laying out in public for anyone to grab.
Off course he's going to have to pay that phone off.

He erased it. You cannot track a phone that's been remotely wiped.
Yes you can, it just removes any photos and private data, it's still icloud linked to him....
