Did you pay for the phone in full or a payment plan? If in full, check with your credit card company as some have theft coverage. If American Express you for sure have it.

I am sorry your kid had his new iPhone stolen. Sucks. Can happen to the best of us, including everybody in here with some of their judgemental posts and know-it-all attitudes (i said some..). :) gha!

Once you call to report it to insurance, surely they will inform you of your options ~ it seems likely they might desire a police report. I also recommend to not remove the phone from the account so you keep remote control over it the best you can. And it's not a matter of "no need to do that stuff, the police doesn't do anything", it's more to make sure you've covered your butt. Imagine taking them to court if you catch them and their defense is "it was borrowed, judge, .. they didn't even file a police report".

I hope it shows up, and I hope you get it back, and I hope you can sell the phone for some Vegas money.

Agree on the police report as it is needed for insurance, if you have it, but expecting the police to actively hunt for a stolen or lost phone is not going to fly.
I'm sorry you have had that experience. Let me share mine.

An iPad was stolen from our office ( DEP / MDM managed / tracked ). I contacted the police department via the standard call to the office to report the theft. During the call, I received a 'ping' email from the device, as someone had turned it on. I zoomed in on the location and sent a screenshot to the dispatcher. The dispatcher transferred me to an officer. I spoke to the officer and directed them to the location. The found the device and thief all while I was on the phone.

Stolen iPad is Grand theft, a felony in Florida.

My brother had his iPad and Macbook Pro stolen and I had two separate work phones stolen, the police did nothing even when someone sent my brother a msg saying that had bought his laptop they wouldn't do anything unless the kid took the computer into them which never happened, so we have never seen any of our stolen stuff again.

Have you asked the fitness center to let you look at security camera images. All of these places have cameras everywhere for liability purposes and they would have a video of your phone being stolen.
They don’t use video camera at LA fitness the say it’s a privacy issue.

Sounds like a great place to go ahead and get someone else their stuff, knowing you won't get in trouble for it. Guess that's one reason why crime rates go down ever so slowly.. Let's catch more guys smoking weed and put them in jail for life..

Nothing as of yet....sigh
No contact with the police or insurance company? or if so, what did they say?

Valid point here. I think most are not aware that they have insurance to the credit card company, but it depends on the stipulations on what was purchased and when.
