My MacBook was Stolen too

My luggage was stolen from the Dearborn Area on November 25th from a van at an IHOP in broad daylight! Inside was my 13 inch MBP. Luckily I have iCloud on it. So far the offenders have not logged on (or they wiped it really fast). It's always showings as off-line. I did a remote Lock and a message that this laptop is stolen and gave the phone number of the police.

My question is, since I have initiated this remote lock, is there any way to remote wipe now? Or has that been disabled?

thanks

Wow, I wonder why there hasn't been an update lol.

What if there was some crazy Scorsese type shootout with the cops? I can see it now:

Luke 007: "I'm tellin' ya Detective McClain, I have all the I.P. information! Get me the laptop back, it has information that's a threat to national security!"

Detective: "Listen kid, laptops get stolen every day... You kids and your FaceSpace stuff.... Take advantage, buy a football, get a girlfriend..."

Luke 007: "No really, I narrowed it down to the neighborhood! If we don't get the laptop back, the president's life is at stake!"

Detective: "What do you mean the president's life? And how can we find him anyway? There's like 20 apartments in that area, with a lot of bad people just waiting to put us away..."

Luke 007: "I cross listed the names of University employees at my school with the local addresses and... There's one name that matches. Antwon Sardisky... He's a janitor at my school."

To be continued...

Trust me, I've thought about it. But the reality is:

1) That's super illegal and I would likely get arrested
2) I might get killed, this is not a good neighborhood
3) I have a police detective on the case who is getting a search warrant and will recover the computer legally, why would I mess that up?

But I will say, if for some reason my detective can't recover the macbook, fails to get a search warrant, or some other ******** I will likely resort to some other "method" of getting my computer back.

Thanks man, I agree. Pretty messed up that a university employee would completely screw over a student like that. Hopefully justice will be served and the guy will be put in prison for a while.

Luke! Dude! Why haven't you logged back into MacRumors sense this post in Aug.? Here we are, loyal mac nerds sitting on the edge of our seat, supporting you from the very beginning. Throw us a bone. Did you get beat-up? Was there a shoot-out? Was your mac greasy and full of porn when you recovered it? What happened and why have you forsaken us Luke?

Tracking programs - Camera Snapshots!

It would be awesome if some how you could activate the webcam and see whose using it.

You can! There are several softwares you can purchase, i think there are even some that are open source, that will allow you to snap photos with the camera. All you do is report it stolen to the company or access your account with a web browser.

http://preyproject.com
^ This software allows you to track IP, GPS location, computer sessions, lock access, and snap photos of the thief. I recently found this program -after- my MacBook Pro was stolen. :( Too bad I didn't have it before.

It's very lame of the OP to have not given an update here.

He might not be able to. I can imagine a detective telling him to shut up about it online as at this point it might not be helpful. I've been getting these "where are the updates" notifications from the forum and decided to put on the thinking cap again. If Luke007 won't tell us, maybe the internet can.

So, new facts:
The unit was stolen at a university, but Luke007 doesn't say which.
Luke did look at my whitepages link and say that one person on that street matches a custodian's name at his university.

Hmm. What universities are there in San Diego? sandiego.edu, for one. And they have a staff directory. So now I just searched all the male names on that street in the staff directory and I got a hit: Last name "Lopez", first name "Gumaro". Custodian 2. Another whitepages search gives him the middle initial J and he's a Jr., to boot, and thinks his age is 45-49. There's someone of that name on facebook in San Diego as well but seems to be a much younger person, judging by the likes and the pictures. And he just became a daddy.

Is he the perp? He doesn't show up in any San Diego-area arrest records, so maybe he's either not the guy or he hasn't been arrested. I typed his name that way above so it doesn't show up as a single string on a google search. After all, the dude may or may not be the laptop lifter and we have to give him the benefit of the doubt, and google searches are forever. Just to reiterate, until a court of law says so, the guy I linked to didn't do anything wrong.

Luke007, update this thread!

Edit: I found this at sandiego's crime log, which almost matches up with Luke's statement of the theft happening three months before his first post:
CAD Date: 2012-03-20 Tuesday Incident 12-03-20-169456

Interesting post. It's possible that Luke went AWOL in the summer at the request of the police, but there's no way this is still an active case. There's no reason he can't post a quick update, even if it doesn't give all of the info. we want. In any event, it's interesting that the case you found says "Disposition: Closed." If that's the same case as this one, either the crime was solved or the police closed it as unsolvable. (Maybe someone can do searches to see 1.) if anyone named Luke went missing or was killed in San Diego over the past few months and/or 2.) if the guy named above has been arrested recently.)

While we're waiting, here's what happened when someone stole the Mac Pro of a Defcon hacker a few years ago. Enjoy.

That video was amazing...wow!! Some hard work and justice prevails.

I only hope that Luke gets his :apple: mac :apple: back.

Same in San diego

Hi everyone,

My Macbook pro was stolen and I have iCloud activated on the computer. Fortunately, I can see the approximate location of my macbook because it frequently connects to the internet, and it has been in the same place for the entire period that it has been missing. I've attach some pics of the location, as you can see it is in San Diego east of the 15 and It's been a couple months now so it doesn’t seem to be moving. It's only about 20 minutes away form where I live. I first went to the police in the hopes that they could figure something out, because the issue is that although we can see about where the Macbook is, the approximate area includes about 2-4 duplexes. An officer actually went to the location and knocked on doors of the residences there and asked if they had a computer, and of course found nothing. I was flabbergasted when he told me this, and I am even more suprised that the people who have my computer didn't catch on to the fact that they are being traced because the computer still frequently connects to the internet. I understand that iCloud does not use GPS to locate, but rather IP address information, is that correct? I am trying to figure out a way to pinpoint the residence where my Macbook is by identifying the Internet network it is on and then identifying which residence owns that network. Do you guys have any idea how I can do this? My thoughts are that I can go to this area, check out what wifi networks are available and pinpoint the possible ones that my Macbook is connecting to iCloud through. Is there some way to see how many computers are connected to a wifi network at any given time? I ask because for example, if my stolen Macbook goes online and I can somehow see that there is only 1 computer accessing an unencrypted wifi in that area then I will have pinpointed the network it is using, which could potentially lead to identifying which residence it’s in if I can somehow match a network with one of these duplex residences. What are your guys thoughts on this? Is there another method I should use? Thanks in advance, I just really want to nail this guy and get my Macbook back!

**I have removed the pics for security reasons.

**UPDATE**

After doing a Kismac scan in the area I have narrowed it down to one unencrypted network that clearly shows my "Apple" macbook sending and receiving data on the network ID'd with my unique Airport MAC address and I.P. number. Detective is seeing what he can do with the I.P. now. I feel like we are very close to closing the case...yet so far away. We shall see what the future holds. ;)

Hi. I had same thing happen in San Diego in same area. Curious if you had any luck. Please email me direct if possible

op's detective could not retrieve the mac, op's got a baseball bat and tried to retrive his mac! Thief was a Janitor /drug dealer and beat the ***** out of OP, now OP's body is burried at a location given by SIRI!

just for you guys to get some closure

Sounds like he got it back. Awesome ending.

Some people here mentioned using "Back to my Mac" to help him out. In his case he didn't have it enabled already on the machine.

I went into my settings and enabled it, but I didn't know what I should turn on in "sharing" to help me out in such a scenario. Is it enough to simply have it enabled? Will I be able to adjust other settings remotely or do I need to get it set now?
