Well...the iPad has been off the grid for the last few days. I called Apple and they told me that the iPad will search for any open wifi signal to report its location for the 'find my iPhone' app. Since it was in an apartment complex, the explanation sounds reasonable.

The problem we're having is trying to figure out what the serial number of the iPad is. My dad had his original iPad 2 replaced in Jan for issues with the screen. They emailed him a repair order with the new serial number and that email is long gone. Apple can't give me the number using his iCloud account. They asked me if we had ever physically connected it to iTunes and backed it up. If i had, the backup on itunes would contain the serial number. I explained to the rep that I thought the idea of iCloud was that I wouldn't have to back it up using a computer.

I don't see the need for your sarcasm actually. Most pd's take residential and auto burgs seriously. While I do agree a patrol officer probably won't put in much time here an investigative unit will look at yr losses and if serials are provided enter them. Also pawn shops in most states are required to open their receipt books for LE inspection. This is a fairly routine practice and a very very common way leads are developed, dirtbags arrested, burglaries cases cleared, and importantly to crime victim some property returned.

Sheesh.

Not true.. Pittsburgh Police department came out and did fingerprint searches after my house was broken into, thousands in electronics stolen and I was held at gunpoint.... then we never heard from them again. Completely worthless.

I'm sure they have wiped and restored it by now since I believe you said it was password locked. Once they do that you can't locate it.

Robbery at gun point =/= theft

I had my iPhone stolen from me while I was at the gym. my locker was broken into. I had "find my iPhone" enabled. I quickly logged into my mobile me account using the gym managers computer, and was able to track the phone via GPS and google maps. I called the cops, told them where it was. I could actually watch the phone travel down the streets, going into stores, then go to the local bus terminal. I was on the phone with the cops telling them what I was seeing, street names etc. then all of the sudden the cop says "okay, we have an officer on foot pursuit" and then there was a struggle, and they arrested the guy right while I was on the phone with them. They said the guy took off running and they chased, tackled him, and he ended up in hospital. I got my phone back, my wallet and my coat, which he also stole, and tried to ditch while running. Couldn't be happier with the tracking of the iPhone. the cops all were enabling "find my iPhone" on their personal phones while I was making my statement, haha.
I wrote a long letter to apple explaining exactly what happened, but never heard back.
I was totally amazed at how the whole thing came together, and the police acted so quick, and caught the guy. They threw the book at the scum bag too. he was known to the police, and had no fixed address. basically a career their. apparently still in jail now too. This took place last winter.
edited to add: When I got the phone back about 20 minutes after the arrest it had only 1% battery left, then died before I could even turn it on.
