User skin conductivity comes into play as well. Sometimes (when it is warmer) I conduct better than other times.

True, my mother can't recreate the problem with my case off while I can. Neither of us have the proximity issue. With the case on this is the best iPhone I've had so far (prior 3G & 3GS customer).

Cheers,

That's pretty much me. The iPhone meets a couple needs better than any other phone on the market and while Apple's silence is deafening, they haven't really done much of anything yet. If a reasonable amount of time goes by and they still haven't said a thing or they say it's not a problem and they have no intention of fixing anything, then to hell with them, their fearless leader and the horse they all rode in on. It's not the first problematic device I've bought from Apple but it will most certainly be the last. But, that having been said, you can't expect a huge corporation to suddenly make a 90 degree turn and start fixing millions or billions of dollars of faulty equipment on a moment's notice. They may need FCC approval to alter the antenna, they most certainly need a valid, sustainable plan to address that many faulty devices and so on. So I wait. But it won't be forever.

This is your choice. Same as I choose never to buy anything other than the base MBP 13" because I find the 15" to be inferior for what I'd have to pay. I buy Windows laptops for high end graphics and games.

If there are 500K unhappy people waiting for day 29 I'd be amazed; but will acknowledge your true sight if it comes to pass.

Cheers,

Funny, I just heard on the radio people are recommended to use duct tape if they want their phone to work! This is reaching out to everyone. When the average consumer hears that, they won't buy it.

Sometimes I feel like I'm reading an Onion parody around here. So many Apple fans here rave about the design and beauty of the iPhone and this revision and now that there's an issue suddenly you're all INSISTING we just put a crappy case on it? Really? Then what's the f'ng point? Just ridiculous the lengths some of you apologists will go to. Every company makes mistakes - stop trying to rationalize every single one Apple makes as a non-issue or even something that's BETTER for us. Makes me sick.

For one when the iPad came out it says you dont have to change yourself to use it. It just works. Granted its not what they said for the iPhone but its BS that we should have to change ourselves to use a product made by a company thats all about being yourself, and having that device conform to the end user

The new success is failure. The media cherishes it.

  • Mel Gibson and his racist rant
  • Lindsay Lohan's and her jail time
  • The Barefoot Bandit and his wild ride of hooliganism
  • The Kardashians
  • countless YouTube videos of fail: The Double Rainbow Guy, The Star Wars Kid, The "Leave Britney Alone" Guy, the faceplants, the nutshots, etc.
  • all the Wall Street antics you can stomach, and then some

Now, the sights are set on Apple. A huge company that still manages to act like a startup, and playing in a world that's dominated by Microsoft and the enterprise. I'm no apologist, but Apple is likely still making their determination of the current build issues that likely only a small percentage of people are having, and the media is treating this like it's some terrorist attack.

Apple vs media vs customer vs fanboy

Apple brought this on their self. Their lack of an honest response and fix has built frustration and now the voices are getting louder. Sure the reports may be amiss but that's what happens when a company hides and denies because they are afraid of what it will do to the bottom line.

I personally am waiting for the FTC to get involved and see if that gets Apple off their butts.

At the end Apple loses. In the age that information travels so fast .. you got to reply fast to the problem .. and the way how Apple delayed and answered to them are unacceptable. It took about 5 days (or longer??) to post a notice on their page about the issue ... they could handle better putting a note that they are checking the issues of antenna but never mentioned until it exploded to that level.

Oh sweet irony, OP complains of misinformation in a post full of misinformation. Signal issue is real, has it been blown out of proportion? Probably, but that doesn't mean it's not an issue.

ash =o)

I never said iPhone 4 doesn't have issues. The issue for me was local TV saying Apple recommended duct tape which is not true. They spent 5 minutes harping on how ridiculous it was to suggest sticky duct tape on a $400 phone (which costs $199 or $299 for most).

I know people have the problem, however, the vast majority either do not have the problem, don't notice it or have mitigated the problem. If you have the problem and don't want to mitigate, return it for a refund.

I just think it's silly for the media to make such erroneous statements and here a bunch of folks defend that because Apple is arrogant. There's not really any correlation between the two.

Yes, Apple (read Jobs) is arrogant. Yes there are problems with the iPhone 4. Most people are not having the problems (or are willing to mitigate). Those that do are angry because Apple/Jobs = arrogant. Press smells blood; attacks blindly with little regard for the details.

Cheers,

They didn't say it doesn't work. They said they couldn't recommend it because there is a problem with reception due to the design of the antenna which can cause problems if you hold it so you are touching the lower left corner. Which is true.

And you've got the cheek to complain about bad reporting.

This is not completely true...Not all Iphone 4 are have this issue. Not mine and not the 6 other friends that have one. These are Iphone 4 bought from day one to just yesterday.

There are some bad apples out there for sure. Take them back. Its not all 2.5 million Iphone 4s that are defective.

All Apple has to do is say, if you are having a reception issue, return your phone for a working model.

The problem for many of these folks is nothing short of an apology and a full recall will do.

There are definitely nowhere near 2.5 million defective units.

I would never post this if I was in the boat of "no problem owners", as I have been in the past, but I will now.

When I bought my 3G and 3GS iPhones, I had no problems other than the usual bugs in the software and wishing some features were available. As sooner as the complainers got to me, I stayed away from this site and came back just to get a feel for what was going on in the iPhone world.

This time, I'm in the group of people who get consistently dropped calls and people asking me "if I'm there" due to not hearing me (and vice versa). I come here to see if Steve Jobs or Apple will finally do something about the problems in the design of this version of the phone. I've been waiting very patiently for either a fix, recall or some word of acknowledgement of the problem(s). Blame AT&T for all I care!

For all you happy users, find happy threads or just don't come here to tell people with problem phones not to be unhappy with the $300 black 32GB hardware I bought to make calls with. I don't make tons of calls, but when I do, I want them to "work".

Of course it's my choice. Per 29 days, I wouldn't hold your breath. If it needs FCC approval, it'll be months before anyone sees a properly working iPhone. What I mean is if Apple doesn't address the problem, like "Hey, you're not crazy, we're working on a solution, hang in there" within the next couple of months, then I'm giving up. Even with that, if they can't have their usual "quiet solution" within, say, 6 months, then I give up. "Give up" obviously can't mean I'll return it and get my money back, it'll be way beyond that point, but I won't buy Apple ever again. I've dropped about $10000 on Apple products over the past two years and that isn't much in and of itself, but I'm one person. In addition, although the iPhone has made life easy because of a couple of apps that aren't available identically on other platforms, I'm sure I could get by with an EVO or something.

FYI, I just got back from AT&T where I picked up a new phone for a 3rd line. It just came in yesterday and it still has the antenna problem so there's no point in exchanging anything yet.

Off topic... but are you using each phone naked? sans case/bumper? (W/o a case folks that have this problem seem to have these issues no matter what phone they hold) If so, and you know your physiology affects this phone, why would you keep getting replacements instead of returning it for a refund? It's unlikely any silent hardware fix has trickled into the supply chain yet.

Cheers,

Cheers,

I prefered using the iPhone without a case but it became quickly apparent that I didn't really have a choice with this one. I don't hear well in my right ear and I hold the phone like I've held every relatively large, heavy smartphone I've ever owned and about 10 minutes after buying it, I discovered the problem, figured out what it was and bought a case for it. Now I can use the phone without having to worry about how I'm holding it but that's hardly a proper solution. I've never had this problem with any 3GS or 3G I've owned. I also have a Blackberry and an AT&T Fuze sitting around here and neither of those ever demonstrated any problem like this. It's totally unique to the iPhone 4.

There are two reasons I don't just return it and be done with it. First, I do like the phone. I'm not pissed off at the phone, I'm pissed off at Apple because they pull this crap all the time and get away with it. I have a flawed Macbook Pro, a flawed iMac, a flawed iPad and a couple flawed Macbooks and none will ever be properly fixed because Apple doesn't acknowledge that they have any problems. In all, I've probably dropped about $10000 on Apple products over the last two years and, as best I can recall at the moment, not one has worked as expected out of the box. The second reason is that I'm a big baseball fan and MLB at Bat for iPhone and iPad is the only version of the app that streams live game video. The program is available to other platforms but not with that feature. MLB says other platforms don't support streaming video so they can't add it to the program on other platforms, which is such a crock that I just assume Apple cut a deal with MLB that they don't make that available elsewhere and, in return, MLB doesn't have to worry about AT&T's data restrictions.

All that having been said, I already bought a case, not from Apple, and I'm not going to return the phone for the above mentioned reasons. But if Apple can't do right but it's own customers and even admit there's a problem, let alone fix it, it's the last Apple product I'll buy. Enough is enough. And given that, why shouldn't I complain long and loud?

So now we have proof. The media made up this whole issue.

.55% Applecare complaint rate.
AT&T returns @ 1/3 of what they were on previous releases
Dropped calls at just 1 call per 100 more than the 3GS.

I personally have not had a single dropped call in the 3 days I've had the new iPhone 4.

And now we all get free bumpers!

Now all the media hype can end and those angry customers can return their "defective" devices and use something else and all these "Antennagate" threads can disappear.

Cheers,
