Last week my Dad told me he had gone into Dick Smith (Australian retailer) and asked one of the guys working there what the deal was with Macs. The retailer answered with the usual spiel, but then said that he wouldn't advise buying a Mac now because Apple has been developing something "groundbreaking", and it would be prudent to wait.

My question is: What relatively recent rumours have been circulating that could pertain to something "groundbreaking"? I'm not sure how the store clerk would have inside information, but I would think he'd have to be quite sure of the rumour's validity to say that to a customer, as it loses him a sale.
The touchscreen iMac rumor is what comes to my mind. Who knows though (or even if he has inside information)…

you know what?
the iShovel isn't that stupid an idea with the amount of buried cables everywhere these days and potential high dollar losses associated with downtime.

We have this "dial before you dig" campaign here to make sure you don't do stupid things like dig up power cables or gas pipes or electrical cables.

Imagine a sensor on the bottom of the shovel that when contacted by the ground if your within a set radius and of a cable ect a warning light sounds ... or if you've docked your ipod and merrily digging away to some Air Supply jams a healthy warning tone emits and the unibody shovel handle starts vibrating.

I bet The Jetsons' had these tools ....

Store clerks don't know anything they don't read off MR. Ignore.

Laptops exist in the Dark Ages

Remember the most cutting edge laptops six years ago? How much different in weight and thickness were they from laptops today?

Now think about cellphones. The best of them were bricks with the dimensions and heft of a hand grenade. Look at them now.

Why have cellphones advanced so much while laptops have seen only incremental change?

Ok let's think this through...

Wiktionary has the following definition:

ground-breaking - innovative, different than other things of its type

By this, it means it will be the same, but DIFFERENT, i.e. still technology, but something awesome. Now, it will obviously be better than a computer, because the dude said don't get the computer! So, we know it's not a phone, pad or anything else of the like. Ruling out the possibilities...

It's gonna be the iShovel (available in 2 feet or 3 feet and with complete unibody enclosure. Let's hope it doesn't need a case).
