For all UK residents: Just in case you don't know yet but any 'protection plan' retailers may offer you, is a waste of money because you get up to six years warranty under the UK consumer law for free.

Even Apple acknowledges that:

http://www.apple.com/uk/legal/statutory-warranty/

So unless you are a seasoned world traveler and rely on world wide warranty, spending money on Apple Care is money thrown out of the window.

I'm not sure that it necessarily covers everything though.

Isn't it supposed to cover specific faults that may not have been apparent when the device was new? So if it turned out, for example, that a batch of machines had faulty hard drives, and those hard drives failed after five years because of that fault, you would be covered.

But if your hard drive just failed down to normal wear and tear after five years you wouldn't be covered?

I've had good experiences with Apple in the past though, not least when they replaced my iMac display that was over a year out of warranty. I guess that was likely covered by SoG.

On the subject of availability, I got ours from Western Computer last week, so if you're anywhere near any of them you might be able to pick one up:

my online order just moved to "preparing for dispatch" so I might get the MacBook delivered before I'm able to find it in stock

If you don't mind me asking, when did you place the order and when did it initially say it was going to be dispatched?

Saw no mention of that, only a one year warranty. How is the three year one accessed?

If you access the Apple Education Store from a higher education establishment it's included automatically.

Interested that you only saw £69 discount. Maybe you are just getting the basic edu discount. If you are accessing from Unidays or an HE network the discount on the 1.1 is £146.60 (£902) and £181.80 off the 1.2. I ordered a 1.3/512BTO and am getting £199 off the standard price(£1419 discounted to £1220) Along with extended warranty it is worth the painfully long wait.

I face a similar dilemma, but I have gone with the HE store, £902.40 and the three year hardware warranty. AFAIK, the extra two year warranty is just as good as AppleCare re: hardware repairs but doesn't give the phone support (which I don't need). The additional HE cover is applied automatically a few weeks after the order.

My 3 year hardware warranty is now showing up on supportprofile.apple.com :)

ordered on release date, delivered last Wednesday.

You can access it either through your university/HE establishment. Or at home through the NUS extra website.

You will know the discount is there, as at the extras page (before you checkout) you will see the option for Apple care, and note that 3 years are showing as "parts and labour" and 1 year is "telephone support", as standard.

I got the 1.2/512 model for £1117.20 (am a PhD student).

I work for a university full time and am doing a master part time distance learning at another.....I should have asked for double discount!

Order was placed about midday on 10th April. And original delivery estimate was 18 - 29th May.
But I didn't think when I ordered (didn't imagine there would be such demand for what i thought would be a niche product) and included the usb-c digital av adapter on the same order, so I guess maybe that's delayed my shipping.

Thanks guys, as I went through the ordering without putting in the Uni details, I must have just been entitled to the basic discount.

As I have ordered from JL and it is on its way, I think that I will just accept the loss balanced against the immediate delivery and two year warranty instead of three.

Store stock in the UK

I was at the Apple Store in the Trafford Centre today. According to the employee I spoke to, they'd been informed that morning that they should start getting stock in greater numbers in the next few weeks.

Was travelling through London Heathrow Terminal 5 today and Dixons has some in stock - not only on display. As I need the German keyboard I did not go for it.

It has been a long time since John Lewis had any stock advertised on their website

I had been calling the London apple stores over the last couple of days and was told they didn't have anything. Called on Tuesday morning and was told still nothing. Decided to chance it and call the Regent Street store directly, they told me they had a few. When I bought mine, I saw at least 8 or 9 being sold. They had limited models in stock but glad I picked mine up.

Apple Stores seem never to get them in (I've been phoning every day for the last week for London stock). On top of that, the Back to School offer hasn't launched as expected so I've just ordered it on HE discount online and hopefully it'll arrive sooner than the estimated 3-4 weeks the site currently states. Anyone got recent leadtime experiences for online orders (1.2GHz/512GB/SG)?
