Mine's pretty simple.

First letter of my first name, then my last name. In 1999, my multimedia instructor demanded that we (the people in his class) set up an email account. So, that's the origin of it.

When I first signed on to an internet forum in the early 00's I used that, and I use it consistently in many other places. Makes it easy for people involved in the same multiple forums and internet places to find me.

My last name is unique enough that it's allowed me to register in a lot of places without having to modify it. Yet, not so unique that I haven't avoided conflict. There's a guy in Washington state who works for a beer distributor that I am often confused with.

And no…even though I've connected with him on LinkedIn I cannot get you free beer.

Used to know a lot about computers in the DOS days, and used to build desktops. Haven't been into it so much once they killed DOS in Windows and went to laptops. If you knew the right DOS commands, you could do things way faster than you ever could in Windows.

Professional hubris. I have a PhD in lasers and build them for a living.

Wow. I have a custom job I'd like to.. well scratch that. Wrong thread lol.

is synergy still a word?
it lasted like, what, a month?
like the stupid "YOLO"

Yep. Well I think "synergy" was a thing for about as long as it took Wall Street to form an opinion of Steve Case and Jerry Levin having agreed to merge AOL and Time Warner. 20 minutes later anyone who worked for Time Warner could have predicted the divorce that took place a decade later. Worst corporate merger in the history of such deals.

There was a time when I was DOS snob. I would tell my family and friends that people used Windows as a crutch because they didn't want to be bothered to learn DOS. And of course, Mac users were beyond the pale.

Karma.

In the 90s to early 00's business primarily used Macs for graphic design (my chosen profession). So, schooling and then my first series of jobs were all done on Macs. I converted in 2003.

But I still like DOS!!!!

I was one of those pushing for a company to go to the Macs... along with the IT department head and a whole bunch of systems analysts and programmers. We used to drag our MacPlus or Mac512k around on the subway into the job to show how simple it was to produce working prototypes of apps for users a day after an in-house client meeting about the business requirements for some new project... by time we got done nudging and nudging, the only thing the company still had programmers using DOS/Windows based desktops for were the payroll and general ledger.

My handle back then was MacYakker because I would sit down at lunchtime and harangue anyone I could find about how much better the Macs were for expediting production of client-centered applications. They were lucky I didn't drag a Mac into the company cafeteria.

When I was 19, my Commodore 128 had pretty much reached the end of it's usefulness to me. A nice older man, SysOp of a BBS I frequented offered me a 286 with a 500mb hard drive for $100 (this is 1990) and allowed me to pay in monthly $10 increments. So, that's how I got introduced to PCs and DOS. Had it been a Mac, things may have gone differently. :)

That said, my mom was a teacher and frequently taught Computer Science. It meant that a lot of computers came in and out of the house from 1980 onwards. While I got involved in PC, she brings home a Mac. I had to learn something because she had the only color printer in the house. And, she also had Pagemaker. :D

Saw Alan Parker's Angel Heart when I was far too young to watch it, and hearing the name Mephistopheles for the first time it stuck. When I was a little older, I read Faust by Goethe, and there he was again. Then, get this, many years pass and I move to where I'm currently living and there's a shoe store of all things, I kid you not, not too far from my apartment that's called "Mephisto".

So I guess as a strong supporter of quality footwear you could say the choice was made for me. And no, I'm in no way affiliated with the store.

Retta is a combination of random letters I pulled from old license plates, back when I was at the Salvage yard. I wanted to come up with a nonsense name to use for people to drop off packages(The contents of which were questionable for a 16 year old to possess). so I pulled out some plates and got to work. When I drove in a trucking fleet, my nickname was Retta. Most people never knew how to spell it, but they still called me retta. The 283 comes from my time playing Team Fortress Classic, I used 283 at the end of most of my nicknames from that point on.

hmm... Cool thread!
DeltaMac: I lived with a portable radio at work for a number of years. I used first and last initials as a verification when I needed to use the radio, so delta delta, and a handful of local folks know me by that handle, even though it has been 30 years since I carried a radio. I worked as a tech at an Apple Specialist when I first joined here. What to use for a username for my avatar? It was easy: DeltaMac. Avatar is a frazzled cat, just like me!...

My username comes from a line in the chorus of the Mike Chapman / Nikki Chinn song, "Hey Mickey" which was a hit for Toni Basil in 1982. It was originally recorded as "Kitty" by the British group Racy in 1979.

Oh, what you do Mickey, do Mickey

Living up country in Thailand at the time, in an area that didn't have electricity, I never heard the song until a decade later, when I was driving a tractor in the UK. Pop is not usually my kind of music, but I liked the flow and punchy beat of the song as I was ploughing. I guess it was played on one of those "top of the pops ten years ago" programs on the radio. I never really listened to the words, but that line stuck for some reason.

I go by a number of different nick names, depending on where I am, and around those parts it was Mick.

I knew nothing about the song until I researched it a few moments ago.

And here it is as "Kitty", recorded by Racy.

I was born during an extreme rainstorm. I was told it was a nightmare due to flooding.

Though I didn't really piece it together until I heard a specific song. I loved November Rain as it got me through some hard times.

So I modified the song name with my birth month. Been using some variation of this since I was about 19.

So glad skeuomorphism disappeared and only wish form factor and price point would too.

Think ya left out at least "paradigm shift" and "deliverable"... I was once going to name my next cat Paradigm Shift but I was afraid to think how the veterinary associates might elect to spell it. Settled for Zantevvi, a completely made up name, and they couldn't get that right either. She became Tevvi. Even I caved in and called her that.

It's a great thing though that one doesn't have to think about what it will sound like to be hollering a cat's name after you take it for a romp in the park, eh?

"Here Paradigm Shift, attaboy, fetch that stick!"

As for skeuomorphism, anyone want to lay bets on what kind of username and avatar Scott Forstall would have?

I like Paradigm Shift as a name! My sister named one of her cats Zoom Pig. 🤷🏼‍♂️
