I'm pretty new to the site- sorry if this isn't necessarily the content that belongs on this section but I think some of you would be interested in this story. I managed to snag a Retina macbook pro yesterday morning at a new york apple store. It was under extremely strange circumstances on how I got it though. I initially went to the apple store to pick up my 2010 macbook that needed a repair. Before walking back to the genius bar I asked if they had the retina's in stock- which I was quickly and confidently told that they weren't and wouldn't be for quite a while. I shrugged and walked back to the bar and was told that my macbook would cost 600$+ to repair (new display). I was talking to the genius for a while because the problem had started after they replaced the logic board (free of charge). I could tell the genius felt bad for me and was trying to think of every alternative so I didn't have to pay the 600$. He managed to pull it down to 300$ If I sent it somewhere in Texas, but I already decided I was going to get a new macbook. So he took me to a specialist and couldn't stop genuinely apologizing. Anyway, I told the specialist I wanted the new 2012 regular macbook- so he said no problem and told the guys in the back through his earpiece to bring one out. Quickly, I saw the genius who helped me run back out and almost whisper to the specialist "give her the retina". The specialist gave him a confused look and repeated the question- as if he didn't hear him right. Anyway a few seconds later- another man from the back comes out with the macbook box pressed against his chest- as if he was hiding it from everyone in the store (I overheard many people asking if they were in stock). The man quickly rang me up and put it in the bag immediately. The genius I originally had said that if I ever needed anything else next time to come directly to him- and how sorry he was about my original macbook and how he hopes I enjoy this one.

So of course I'm happy as hell knowing that I have one but I'm killing myself wondering why they're telling people they're out- or where this macbook came from? Do they just tell people they don't have them but they do? My guess is that it was a replacement for a floor model maybe? Sorry if my story was confusing, I just wanted to share it with you guys.

My guess is if what you say is true, they have extremely limited stock, and don't want to sell Retina's in a crowded store. If they have 4 Retina's in stock, and 8 people are in the store asking for one at once, it could get ugly. You may see one person first but one person has been waiting longer, etc.

Apple Stores keep some stock on hand for service replacements, separately of stock for sale. Maybe it was from that?

I was thinking this as well, but I think the ones kept for replacements are in those white plain boxes without the chargers and manuals because when I got my iPhone replaced, that's what they took it out of- not a brand new box.

You did not mind paying $400 more for the retina? Assuming you were in the market for a 15" cause a base 13" is $1000 difference.

It's nice of them and all but that's kinda a big $ jump.

My girlfriend is of above average hotness , and is completely oblivious to why the "nice cop" let her off on the ticket, or the "nice mechanic" cut her bill in half. As a big guy i go through life with the exact opposite reality. Must be nice. You sound like the right kind of girl who wasn't batting your eyelashes trying to get the hookup.

Of the other 1 million guys on here raise your hand if apple ever hooked you up with a $600 free upgrade.

Didn't think so

To answer you your question. Yes they lie about stock. Yes they play preferential treatment along the lines of hormones (apparently). Yes they don't have any freakin idea what they are doing. Yes they can be rude as hell while they lie to your face, while having huge hard-ons.

Enjoy your new MacBooks :)

The 2010 macbook that needed a screen replacement was a 15 inch- so yes I definitely wanted another 15". I didn't mind paying more though because once I saw it in person (it really does make a difference), I knew that's what I REALLY wanted. Also keep in mind that I did get a student discount.

Welcome to the club.

I don't care what your gender is, but I wish we had service like that here.

Ah well..that's what we get for not having official Apple Stores and only autborized resellers and service centers :(

Hmm... well

A) you are female. ok so that goes a long way, especially these days...
B) if u are above about 3.2 in looks ur gonna get even better treatment.
C) if u wrere some ugly fat dirty "rude" old man the guy would have been happy to charge 900 for the repair.

... ok so u got lucky, this is by no means going to work for everyone... that should be obvious.
