Here is a strange story on how I got my Retina

1) Went 2 days after launch to the Munich (Germany Store)
2) Asked the floor walker ... any chance of a Retina... nope no stock 3 weeks waiting... :(
3) Took away a 13" Air (Replace my 13 2010 !)
4) Back home ... agra no screen backlight :( ... after 6 forced on & off backlight back but washed out screen
5) Next day back to the store ... money back ... looking at those 11" again.. should i...
6) Talked with one of the floorwalkers, discussed the pros and cons ...mentioned also that I would like to get the 11" for mobility and also a retina for heavy lifting at home, and how the RT would also allow me to do that heavy lifting anywhere around the house or in the garden (better than a Desktop)..
7) he just comes right out and states .. why not take the retina now and get the 11" later..
8) really are they in stock ... sure lets get one brought here ...
9) Bang its there, €'s flow and I walk out ...

they did also the hide it don't show anyone.. we did actually move to where the iPods were before the guy brought it from the back ... kinda moved far away from the display stock :) ...

only the base with 256GB but ordered a 512 11" so have an official dealer swap them around .. now thanks to USB3 only takes 15 min with CC to clone my setup ..

now using the RT feels just like the experience when years ago I first started using a pro book (moved across from a Micr$oft based dell laptop), what I mean its like moving to a whole new generation/experience... :)

Hmm... well

A) you are female. ok so that goes a long way, especially these days...
B) if u are above about 3.2 in looks ur gonna get even better treatment.
C) if u wrere some ugly fat dirty "rude" old man the guy would have been happy to charge 900 for the repair.

... ok so u got lucky, this is by no means going to work for everyone... that should be obvious.

I never insinuated that it was going to work for anyone. As stated, I wanted to share the story and talk about what the possibilities could be that they're telling other people that they are out of stock completely. I never thought it would turn into a gender war.

Ha all I can say is what if you didn't want the Retina!
They based it on a hunch that you wouldnt have refused but you prob go the lowest spec one i.e smallest HD and 8gb of SOLDERED RAM!!

My mind you prob wouldve been better of with new normal mbp you asked for originally

Nice story, but have two major components fail in a two years old computer is not acceptable.

I'll have asked for free repair on the bases the machine sold to me is not fit for purpose, as you would expect the motherboard and screen to remain working after two years. Therefore, those components must be defective unless they can prove the damage was caused by the user.

Enjoy your new machine, some of us still have 4 weeks to wait.

This thread got weird really fast.

A friend of mine had a similar identical experience to you at the NYC Soho Apple store many years ago. He is male, since that's apparently really integral to the story. Another friend had his iPhone 3GS die a couple times, and a genius replaced it with an iPhone 4 when they were allegedly out of stock. Last I heard, it's because they keep a small stash of new stuff in the back just in case a VIP/celebrity/etc wants one, so the geniuses can afford to sell (or give away) stuff if they feel really bad for you.

All girls get discounts, even at my studio. Heck, some girls end up not paying any money for their photos, if you know what i mean.
And i'm known to be one of the most expensive photographers in the area. :)

Based on the 2 MBP stories and one iPhone story above, if Apple genius felt that they owed you something extra, they might be able to access the secret stockpile. It makes sense! Imagine waiting in line and picked up a new iPhone 6 in Sep/Oct. within hours, they are all sold out. You take you phone home and realise it was defective. You take it back to the store and expect a replacement. That is why they have to have additional stock. Can you imagine, if in that story, Apple said, sorry we are sold out! Your 'Apple experience' would be tarnished.

Why refuse ... As the GPU for light gaming is better than the rest and the Retina form factor is sweet .. don't need a DVD ... has build in HDMI so no need to loose an adapter .. or be caught without it .. runs cooler than the "Normal" ones started the "Y>NULL" test on both and RT much cooler after 5 mins !

for my perspective ...
8 gb is fine.. had that in my iMAC for years... my 2010 Air only had 4 ... limited SSD ... nope cross graded the SSD with the 512 coming out of the 11"(also has 8GB)...

why so negative ?

No, I'm not. But geez, I didn't think posting a thread about a stock situation would lead to a bunch of statements like these.

Apple Geeks, may they be in-store or on forums are desperate for any female attention ;) In-store you got a discount and then a retina, in this forum they are almost desperate to ask you out without even seeing you ;)

As a female in the Apple Geekdom, you have great power.... just saying :) yes its sad lol

Gratz on the Retina!

I don't give a **** if you're a boy or a girl, hot or ugly, great story and thanks for sharing. Theres always a good story of one sort or another that results from an Apple visit. Enjoy your new MBP! It should be awesome.

You're in an internet tech forum full of geeky guys (no offense intended, guys) with very few females around. Any mention of being female around here often garners remarks like this. Any time any female has a good customer experience at an Apple Store, it's automatically assumed that it's just because of her gender, which is ridiculous because there's tons of guys out there that have had good experiences, as well. Just learn to ignore it. And enjoy your new MBP!

yeah like what? I just went through 2 pages and still no photos? :p Not acceptable! this is THE INTERNET! photos is required ;)

As it happened....

I'm glad you were able to get your retina system although I'm not sure why they didn't do something more with your 2010 MBP.

I'm also sad to see the statements in this thread. I've worked in IT for many, many years, have a CS degree (among others) and yes you toughen up after a while. Sexual harassment isn't uncommon but still sad to see.

Sexual Harassment? You should try sales and marketing, its brutal out there! IT tends to be full of geeky guys who are just glad to talk to girls! Having worked in IT for many many years, Good looking females tend to be treated like princesses!, There is some banter on this tread, but I think your trying to find something that does not exist.

If I understand this part correctly, you plan to take the 512GB out of the 11"Air and swap it with the 256GB in the Retina?? I'm sorry to say but this is not possible. The SSD is the only part than can be replaced but I believe the connection is different between the Air and the RetinaMBP. This is why we have to wait a while to get OWC to produce an upgradable SSD for the Retina like they did for the Air.

Well personally, the 'pics' posts are annoying.

I think you are taking this too seriously. It's just light-hearted "stereotypical" joking.

As for "geeky guys are just glad to talk to girls", all straight guys are glad to talk to girls, some are just wired to be nice to the other gender because of how they were brought up. Stop complaining, sheesh.

Fair enough on that one. That is why I just threw them a google image to keep em quiet and for some humour. Though yeah your right, shame the tread lost its meaning.

It's no secret you can come away from an Apple store with a huge smile on your face after you've just been handed the best support/customer service of your life... I've been a few times, as have friends and we all come away happy.

However, what they done for you here goes beyond that, and it's also common knowledge that hot girls get all the perks...

I'm pretty new to the site- sorry if this isn't necessarily the content that belongs on this section but I think some of you would be interested in this story. I managed to snag a Retina macbook pro yesterday morning at a new york apple store. It was under extremely strange circumstances on how I got it though. I initially went to the apple store to pick up my 2010 macbook that needed a repair. Before walking back to the genius bar I asked if they had the retina's in stock- which I was quickly and confidently told that they weren't and wouldn't be for quite a while. I shrugged and walked back to the bar and was told that my macbook would cost 600$+ to repair (new display). I was talking to the genius for a while because the problem had started after they replaced the logic board (free of charge). I could tell the genius felt bad for me and was trying to think of every alternative so I didn't have to pay the 600$. He managed to pull it down to 300$ If I sent it somewhere in Texas, but I already decided I was going to get a new macbook. So he took me to a specialist and couldn't stop genuinely apologizing. Anyway, I told the specialist I wanted the new 2012 regular macbook- so he said no problem and told the guys in the back through his earpiece to bring one out. Quickly, I saw the genius who helped me run back out and almost whisper to the specialist "give her the retina". The specialist gave him a confused look and repeated the question- as if he didn't hear him right. Anyway a few seconds later- another man from the back comes out with the macbook box pressed against his chest- as if he was hiding it from everyone in the store (I overheard many people asking if they were in stock). The man quickly rang me up and put it in the bag immediately. The genius I originally had said that if I ever needed anything else next time to come directly to him- and how sorry he was about my original macbook and how he hopes I enjoy this one.

So of course I'm happy as hell knowing that I have one but I'm killing myself wondering why they're telling people they're out- or where this macbook came from? Do they just tell people they don't have them but they do? My guess is that it was a replacement for a floor model maybe? Sorry if my story was confusing, I just wanted to share it with you guys.

Congratulations! So, how do you like the retina MBP? I've got one, and I can't seem to stop smiling while looking at the display. :)

That just sounds weird, having stock in the back, and lying about not having it, to the point of having to hide it from everyone. Unless they're hoarding stock to try to make sales figures for another period or something...

Also, everyone in this thread that's asking for pics needs to read this: http://xkcd.com/322/
