Then again, I think Apple is in a bit of a bad situation with the iPod currently. It is now a commodity item - it seems everyone has one, and they are starting to seem "cheap", and not all that valuable. By pricing the iPhone at $500, it makes it seem like a very valuable item, something which I think Apple wants.

I'm not sure how ubiquity equals cheap. To me that means market saturation, the goal of every electronics manufacturer. Apple has mostly stayed ahead of the game by updating the iPod on a regular basis, much less the enormous accessory market that allows people to personalize their iPod.

The various models allow room for bragging rights as well. eg "My iPod's bigger than yours!"

I think after 10.5 is released, we'll see some substantial upgrades to the iPod. One thing Apple understands only too well is that the iPod is what will ultimately allow them to become the largest seller of music in the US. Something few companies would turn down.

Why dog it?

Can't help laughing at everyone who is putting this machine down... Left and right (or up and down), I am reading disappointments about what it lacks, and why they won't buy, or what's superior...... But strangely enough, they're all on here posting and lapping up every bit of iPhone rumor/fact.....lol. If I wasn't interested in buying a product, the last thing I would be doing is wasting my time, pouring through posts pointing out every flaw, and challenging a consumers' decision-making skill.

We all know there's no 3G. So what? That service does not exactly "blanket" the country as of yet, and I for one, would have better luck stumbling into a WiFi zone than 3G. Sure, the capability would be nice to have built in, but it's hardly a reason not to purchase. It's not a computer replacement AT ALL, nor does it promise to be. Having the ability to check a web addy at will is nice, even if it takes (insert dramatic sucking-in-of-breath) dial-up speed.

Lack of Multi-Media Messaging is a weird omission, but in the same respect, I have to wonder if my friends on their RAZR's could actually receive the 2MP pic I just sent anyway, although perhaps I am misunderstanding how it works. What I do believe, is that Apple will put out some sort of update to give us what we want. An auto-scaling feature to send the right size and the like. The iPhone's whole point of being button-less, is so it can be chameleonic anyway, right? Mr. Jobs spelled out that very fact when introducing it. It was meant to change as new features and needs, become feasible.

I never wait when there is a product out that they surely will be revising. I buy what I want, when I want. If a new version comes out, and sports a feature I simply can't live without, I will get it. Ebay is a beautiful thing, and more so, is handing it down to someone you know who is less fortunate. I have never had a problem with any 1st edition :apple: product I have ever purchased.

I hear a lot of people saying that they are going to wait 1-3 years until the iPhone is released for their carrier. Well, for this particular model, they'll be waiting 5.

I was under the impression that AT&T had 5 years of exclusivity. Unless they come out with a completely new model that is inferior to this one, or is a radically different model, T-Mobile (example) simply isn't going to get it. And, IMHO, I feel a CDMA type deal makes more sense anyway if it were to happen.

Bottom line, if you don't like it, don't eat it..... But please don't try to foil the early-adopters' excitement. It's been too long of a wait, and there's some edgy people lurking about.:D
(steps off soap-box)

I disagree. I think Apple is trying to bring the more powerful class of phones to the more regular consumer. .

How is the iPhone more powerful?

If you can't install freely third party software, your so called 'more powerful' phone goes to waste.

In any case , I doubt the iPhone is more powerful. Its just got a pretty UI, and little else.

I'm sure you will be able to install third party software within a week of release. There are people who dedicated their lives to circumventing the proprietary.

Maybe *you* don't want 3G but perhaps its important to others - when they have 3G access and don't want to spend $600 on a 'yesterday' phone that they can't make full use of.

This was clear to me already, and the point. But thanks...:)

Make it a great day:)

Thats nice to know considering that my phone broke 1 week broke the iPhone launch.

Hmmm, my phone isn't planning on breaking for at least another 72 hours.

(btw, and the timing is perfect... my Sprint Contract goes month to month on the 27th)

Just hardware and OS-wise, the iPhone IS more powerful and capable than any "feature phone", and really many "smartphones" as well. Just looking at what the iPhone can do with video playback, etc. it is much smoother than any Palm OS-based device, and many Windows Mobile devices I've seen as well.

It's not "just a pretty UI"; fundamentally, it appears to be a much more powerful OS capable of running much more powerful apps than the typical smartphone, and certainly any regular phone.

Just saying it's a "pretty UI" implies that one could just slap the same UI on a Windows Mobile phone (as Meizu is doing with the Meizu M8 iPhone clone) and it would be the same experience, and I don't think it would. Try using a Windows Mobile smartphone and see how smooth the experience really is.

I mean more powerful than phones like the RAZR. And even if RAZR had every ability the iPhone has, hardly anyone would use those capabilities on the RAZR. Why? Well, because they are difficult, comparatively, to the iPhone's capabilities. So, the iPhone is meant (in my opinion) to shift the smart phone market more towards the consumer. (Perhaps high-end consumer, but consumer non the less.)

Good to know...

I have been a little afraid of buying the iPhone because I know I drop my phones so much that I need a new one in a matter of months. I don't want to spend six hundred dollars on the iPhone and then drop it and break the optical glass out of it... That would suck! But seeing there are third party cases for it make me feel a lot better, and this article telling they have done the stress testing makes it all worth while to spend the money on something I really want.

This thread is so old I figure I should write a reply just for the heck of it. Hello people of 2007, I come from the future. Do NOT buy the iphone immediately, it will have a $200 price drop in a matter of months. That will be all. :apple:

Why did you bump an almost three year old thread? *sigh*
