Well, I ordered a 2.5" to 3.5" ssd/hdd, bracket so I'll be able to rule out the "installed on the wrong hard drive" issue. I meant to put another, better hard drive into the machine, but right now I just can't justify that. I know a few distros I'd like to try again.

Well if you're bored and adventurous i've attached my how-to for updating ubuntu 16.04 remix. I couldn't get the installed system to boot from the iso's i made, so i'm taking a break. This guide is how i got a ton updated on my powerbook. Give it a whirl if you want.

More instructions are in the sources.list.
Once you have updates installed copy the /etc/issue /etc/issue.net and /etc/lsb-release to your new system if you want neofetch to display 18.10. Copy hosts.deny to /etc/hosts to enable system-wide ad blocking.

Cheers

So following these instructions on an installed 16.04 system should get me a system updated to 18.04?

In an unofficial round about way, yes. Ubuntu is based on debian. So it's near 100% compatibility. So using debian sid / fienix packages it's pretty easy to update most of the installed Ubuntu 16 software. Just be patient, and selective, and you should be ok. My PowerBook g4 is now 70% updated from 16.04.

Due note however I did have to reinstall a few times because I pushed the issue and tried forcing some stubborn packages, or didn't pay attention to what might be removed by installing other software. For instance updating synaptic removed lubuntu-desktop.

So I wouldn't advise it, unless you have no sensitive info you want to keep and you aren't afraid to hack around a bit.

Cheers

Ok, thank you! I'll save this project for a rainy day when I feel like tinkering a little. I have a Mini with a failed install of Gentoo on it that I think would be perfect to try this on just for fun :D
