Discount is 10%

The discount is 10% but on some things it is a dollar amount which is only $100 on a few of the $1500 products which isn't a very big discount.

errr right..
while we're talking about morality let's talk about apple marketing the "cool factor" i.e buy our products and you'll look "cooler"..It's definetly moral to breed a population of consumers that thrive on this aspect..and slap a price tag on it *sarcasm*
I'm not categorising any of you or myself for that matter - I've been a PC user for years and the sole reason I'm saving to buy a mac is because with my experience , life expectancies of PC laptops are 2 years tops..So I'm taking a gamble with a mac.
That being said..You aren't going to hell if you get a student to purchase it for you, I'm a student but im afraid I live in the UK so I can't help you..but I WOULD if I was in the US..
The poor guy said he's tight, and he wants a mac - he's not stealing it..and it's not like apple won't profit from his purchase - so give him a break.
And some people who say "I dont mind paying more for a mac because of their research and development scheme" or "I buy stuff from apple because they deserve it" when their ram/hd's e.t.c are all cheaper from third party distributers, all I have to say is *ROFLCOPTER*.
Brainwashed drones. You think they aren't making enough money?
I appreciate any company that satisfies it's customers, but when I see a bargain i'll choose that..It's not like if I opt to buy windows vista from microsoft they're going to send me a bouquet of flowers and thank me.

Precisely right; this is how I think of it. If I thought it was morally wrong, and I mean REALLY immoral, I'd *NEVER* even have considered it. People in glass houses, shouldn't throw stones; IE - we are ALL human, and all of us are blatent hypocrites; it's the pretense that we are perfect and the "other man is worse than me" that causes all the problems in life.

Get a grip and get over your perfect selves - if you would like to buy me a second Mac Pro :D please PM me and I shall send you my bank details ;). For what it's worth, NOONE has had to sign ANY contracts OR paperwork in order to purchase my discounted MP; where's the "contract" then?.

@radionickhead - loving "ROFLCOPTER" dudddddee!!! :D :D :D

PS: I'm selling the Mac Pro I just got, when the Nehalem 16 Core MP comes out... but I guess none of you will be up for a deal, due to your faux-morality constraints! ;)

If the discount is only 10% then I am going to get a refurb. Strange because I keep hearing very different numbers on what the discount is. They have the model I want on refurb right now, so that would work ok.

Welp, the discount is far less then I expected. 10% discount means I am just going to get a refurb. Originally, I heard the discounts were closer to 20%, which is a very tempting offer to refuse.

Refurb was a problem at first because I wanted to upgrade the video card, however after reading a lot about the 3870 I am going to be getting it instead.

Thanks all for the help :D

Did you ever goto college? Does your school let people who graduated take more classes without applying to the school again? (Mine does) This means that you will always be eligible for the discount because you are technically 'accepted into' the school, as per the apple terms and conditions.

Faculty and staff of Higher Education institutions; and students attending, or accepted into a Higher Education institution are eligible to purchase

http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/salespoliciesEdIndividual.html

You could also pay the $5 fee to apply to a community college (some have guaranteed acceptance) and legally get the discount.

another way to get the discount

If you have a friend that is a federal government employee, then your friend can sponsor you and get the federal employee discount (typically as good or a little better than the education discount)...virtually everyone knows someone who works for the government.

You can check pricing at the various Apple web stores (education, government, etc) by selecting the link at the bottom right of the AppleStore page...

Per the Federal EPP page...

Personal Discount: You may purchase or "sponsor" up to six system bundles each calendar year (January 1-December 31). "Sponsoring" means placing an order for a family member or friend. No more than two systems or monitors may be shipped each calendar year to the same individual or entity (i.e., company, institution, club or group), whether that purchase is sponsored solely by you or, also, by other eligible employees. You may not sponsor the purchase of products by any educational institution. A system bundle includes, and is limited to, one CPU, one display (built-in displays count as one display), one AirPort card and one Airport Base station. You do not need to purchase all components of a system bundle at the same time to qualify for the discount.

Better solution:

Get refurbished. Similar price as Education pricing.

store.apple.com
look under "Special Deals"

However the refurb stuff comes and go, sometimes there are Mac Pros for around $2000 but didn't see it recently.

The best way to go without being a jerk! Go refurbished and never look back.

Why lie about being a student or getting a student to buy the machine for when you are really only saving $200? Using a senior discount at the movies when you aren't old, parking in the handicap spot when you aren't disabled, and using the only woman's restroom when the men's is full classifies you as a jerk!

But to each their own. I had to stop pulling the student discount thing because I didn't want to be looked at as a snot nosed college student that's wet behind the ears. I actually want people to know that I did make it out of college and have a good career and can afford my machines.

That's why I go refurbished just about every time.

you usually just have to just say your a student, if you order it online.

i understand your problem, i got my macbook from my bro college discount, and i be honest i don't feel like a criminal, it like people who say that piracy is wrong. but do it anyway

I'm currently home(which is not in the UK) and im not going back to the UK until later this week..but I wanted to check out the HE discount prices..I'm currently at Nottingham Uni, but I googled around and found some proxy details for Manchester Uni..You'll need a username and pass from a student at manchester(I have friends there), but I just went on their proxy and browsed freely..and went all the way to the checkout counter(no money so didn't purchase)

Apparently Applecare is only 60(GBP) on student discount as well..So if my calculations don't decieve me - HE student discount is definetly more of a bargain than ANY refurbished deal I've come across.. So screw the false morality and screw the system..POWER TO THE PEOPLE :D After you buy it you can stick a Che Guevara sticker on the Mac logo and promote communism.

Anyway to expand on the morality issue - sure, apple makes great products balblablalba but they're overpriced...99% of you are PC haters - which is fine..I've used PC all my life and I'm a PC hater and I still use PC's. But apple wouldnt be offering student discounts if they didn't make a profit out of them..instead of charging 1000% of what it costs to make their notebooks they charge 500%(just an analogy..don't need to get your knickers in a twist, I know 15-17% of 1000% isn't 500%...or is it...?*impending doom*) - "OH BUT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT" - ..give me a break.
Excuse my disrespect for the guy who stated something about Chinese or Malaysian labor(I'm just too lazy to scroll down and find your name) - ..are you serious..?
: fat cat still gets his box of champagne bc costs get pushed to the consumer, or some child worker in china gets less money. refurbished is the way to go if you have any morals. we pay enough for great products.
So you're stating apple uses child workers ? - well in that case I'm definetly not lying to them..I'm going to pay MORE money so those poor child workers get a better salary...
You know whats going to come next from you people??
You're going to say "STEVE JOBS INCREASES THE PRICE OF MACS SO THE CHILD WORKERS APPLE EXPLOITS GET HIGHER SALARIES AND HENCE APPLE AIDS DEVELOPING COUNTRIES.."

unlokia, I just noticed you said more or less what I said without all the glittery stuff before I did :D..I'm glad you agree with me I was worried I was the only sane person on the forums ;) - Some of the stuff I read on here really makes me giggle like a school girl..oh and if you're in the UK I'd be more than happy to use my student discount for you if you want..You'd have to come pick it up though - I'm in Nottingham. And since I have 0 morality - I'm interested in buying your macbook pro off you ;D I'm only waiting for the new ones to come out so the price on the current models goes down..Unless the macbook comes out with a bad ass graphics card - which it won't. PM me if you're interested in striking a deal..or rebelling in another thread :D

hah you made my day & WEEK!!. :D

I like this man; shameless and honest, no high horse to fall off!. :D

I just got a Mac Pro, not a MacBOOK Pro, and no matter; I have no intention of selling up just yet, after only just over 24 hours of ownership - thanks all the same for your friendly and kind remarks.

Shame that the fun of Mac based forums, becomes distorted and polluted with pretentious, egotistical t@!#**rs - but then it becomes SO much easier to spot the genuine article, when you are surrounded almost daily by fakers and snobs.

PS: I'm not the kind to "rebel" as such - I just speak my mind, as long as I don't think I am being offensive (hyper-sensitive people may as well close your eyes, when you see a thread with my name on it - I'll never win with these sorts! :D). I dislike BS and I dislike arrogant self-importance, which unfortunately seems to have become an unavoidable side affect for many Mac "Professionals" (please wait here a second, whilst I try and regain my composure after almost choking with hysterical laughter :D :D).

My lovely Mac Pro is MY SLAVE - I feed it power & files, and twiddle a bit and it spits out things that please me highly. It also happens to be a rather SHEXY poota!.

It's great to know there are a few genuine people left online; they don't come to the fore so often, but it's a refreshing change when they (you) do!. :D:D:D

@ the rest of the thread... I hold my uncontrollable laughter back; I'm reserving it for the next person to post a judgemental, predictable addition to the thread. I got my slice of the Apple pie, without fattening the wallets of others ANY more than needed. I did so legally, and if you find that I am immoral... well... basically... maybe it's time to give up and jump threads; you are all lovely people...

I BID YOU GOOD NIGHT, AND HAPPY PRICE SLICING. :apple::apple::apple:

PS: Wanna hear my new Mac Pro, at FULL, THUNDERING ROAR??:

Right.... because we all love lying just to save a buck.

As I said, when I need to save a few bucks on Apple hardware I go refurbished, since hiding behind the skirt of my old student discount is a bit juvenile. Especially when you DO have a job.

Nothing against you, just the way the post sounds. Like it's COOL to break the rules and fool the big bad Apple Inc. out of $200 per computer sale.

Sorry?. I don't recall ANY lying, in my relative stating "I'd like to buy a Mac Pro - here is my NUS card, for the discount". Nothing was signed, nothing was pertained to OR asked of him with regards to the "rules" which you pretend you know about so well. Nothing states: "You may not give it away as a gift, NOR allow anyone else to use or borrow it"... or can you find that in the "rules"?. Please... save your breath...

"rules"... I am seriously considering falling off my chair, and rolling myself on the floor, filming it and posting it on YT. Maybe I won't, any more than I'll consider your tripe as anything BUT that. Consult your handbook of morals, and come back to me when find ANYTHING that suggests that asking my relative to buy a Mac Pro under HIS name, and then hand it to me as a gift OR loaned machine (makes no difference), is in ANY way immoral. Be brave, and face the facts; it's not "immoral" and you are not any better than me for having suggested it is!.

If you'd like a morality 101; consider hypocracy and judgement of others, based upon the inescapable fact that you also, are human, and inherently prone to SIN as we all are. You are talking to a guy who's Father is a Christian priest, and whole heartedly helped him to afford the purchase of the machine, in full knowledge of the discount and it's terms, encouragingly so!. If you cast aspersions as to HIS morality also, I shall have no option but to grin like a chimpanzee, every time I hear you spout such blatently flawed bites of babbling BS.

Come to terms with morality, and realise that you sit in direct judgement of some other human, as if you are somehow immune to the very same treatment of your "opinions". Nothing illegal OR immoral has transpired. Apple charge £5,760.00 for 32Gb FBDIMM for Mac Pro; Crucial charge £1,720.16 for the VERY SAME SPECIFICATION AND QUANTITY OF MEMORY!. Care to revise your moral rulebook, to accomodate and justify this pricing?.

move along now. :)

Nothing against you

Oh of course not... thanks for pointing that out; convenient sub-clause to attempt to persuade me to listen to your otherwise ridiculous comments ;)

Don't see one single mention, that giving away the computer that is purchased, is against ANY rules:

I quote the T&Cs of Apple UK:

http://store.apple.com/Catalog/uk/Images/salespolicies_individual.html

and remind ANYONE stating otherwise, that there is NOTHING to suggest that lending or giving away the LEGAL PROPERTY of my friend/relative, is in ANY way illegal OR immoral. I rest my case here.

PS: I hear that Pizza Hut employees are entitled to a limited number of free pizzas; sub-clause; said employee must eat said pizza themselves, and are forbidden to pass slices of said free food, to other hungry parties within their social environment. Pizza hut will embed GPS trackers within the pepperoni, to ensure this is conformed to. Sound silly?... ironic.

Tripe, through and through (do you have Apple shares, per chance?).
