"Buyers are forbidden from updating or erasing the iPhone, opening it up, or using it as a daily phone. So far, the bidding has exceeded $800."

So... I can buy something from you, take ownership of it... but I can't do what I want with it? The seems almost the same as buying a standard iPhone from Apple. ?
Nah. Selective quoting from MacRumors.

By bidding on this auction you agree that:

  • You will not restore, update, or erase this iPhone
  • You will not use it as your daily phone
  • You will not open it
I guarantee that the phone will work when you receive it but if you don't follow the aforementionned guidelines you are on your own. So basically you can do whatever you want with it but don't expect anything from me if you break something. It is just a prototype.”

That’s the full quote.

I do think that at times Apple does slowly intentionally roll out product upgrades that they feel will not tip the scale in their favor. The just re-direct us to other product highlights and make those areas shine. USB-C best port? Dunno.. But everyone else is using it besides apple.

Complete waste of time doing something that we know can be done. As for being a future Apple Exec that is surely a joke.
Is it a not waste of our time here to stumble over your dismissive comment on what that kid did?

Actually he proved he is very skilled and clever: now he can use one plug with all of his devices (if that's what he intended).

What are the chances Apple sends this guy a Lawsuit Pro Max as a reward for his efforts?

I'd say slim to none. Some there might actually appreciate the skills displayed.

What a waist of time and university resources...

Hardly. Uni is a time to learn and explore, even if it appears trival or a waste of time to some. You will rarely get the resources or expertise available at uni at a job; or teh freedom to play around and see what you can do.

A usb c port on an iPhone won’t accomplish anything but provide an inferior connector. You still won’t be able to plug stuff into it anymore than you can plug stuff into an iPhone now (there’s like 3 accessories that work).

USB C connectors are much less physically secure than lightning. Think your lightning plug is loose on your iPhone? Wait until it gets a usb c connector

I can't recount how many times people told me that whatever they had to learn during their studies was never applied in their actual job in real life.

I think it's very smart to just try to fix something you care about with the theoretical knowledge you've acquired in school. And maybe that's also why this is news. I will not assume Macrumours posted this just for the bait ... right? ; )

Cool. But it’s a USB-C connector running at USB 2.0 speed.

This just protects him from legal challenges from Apple for modding/selling their products. Though, if Apple wants to put the squeeze on him, they have plenty of lawyers that would just make him miserable.
That said, it would be just too much negative PR if they did go after him. It’s not like he’s mass producing the parts anyway.

My bet is that he had to mod some of the OS to handle the us-c pinouts/power output vs lightning, and it won't work if updated. This is really a proof-of-concept, and he doesn't want anyone suing him if it doesn't work properly down the road.

Apple doesn't want to bring USB-C to the iPhone because they wouldn't be able to charge third party makers for the certification required to manufacture Lightning cables. It's as simple as that.
That has become the one and only reason for everything since Tim Cook controls Apple. „Lock competition out, lock users in“ this way Apple makes money and avoids competition.

Apple is not going to sue the kid. If anything I would think Apple would try to hire him. I still don't understand the clause of not being able to use it once you pay for it.

If Apple wants to keep the lightning connector; they really need to support USB 3 transfer speeds or come up with another solution to get those massive ProRES video files off the iPhone and on to a Mac.
They did support USB3 via Lightning on the first 12.9” iPad Pro, actually. But that required another chip that is probably too big to fit in an iPhone!

They haven't said they can't. They said they don't think it's the right option. Of course, they'll probably do it eventually.
Pro models will get it, non-pro models will go port-less.

The Lightning connector is now nearly 10 years old. It is getting long in the tooth and needs to go. For perspective, the old 30-pin Dock connector was 9 years old when devices with Lightning first went on sale. In other words, Lightning is as old today as the Dock connector was back then.

Good to be a proof of concept that almost never gets the chance to see the light of the day on apple side because apple HATES PORTS.

“Where is my portless iPad and Mac???” /s

I would pay him to do this to my 13 Pro, that or give details on what pins to solder up, what mods I need to do ;) .

Copy speeds through the port on this phone are totally abysmal as compared to IO speeds on my older Pixel 3, and brand new Pixel 6. Moving gigs of 4K video (especially pro res) is punishment. Due to Lightning on this device, I jokingly call it the iPhone 13 Prosumer.
