If it was in his back pocket he was probably sitting on it, which might have crushed the battery.

I'm not sure why people carry phones in their back pockets. They're more likely to be pick pocketed, you have to take them out to sit down to avoid sitting on your phone, etc...

Batteries are small bombs, they contain a lot of energy. While they have safeguards builtin (i.e poking them with a knife causes them to release the energy over time and not in one big BOOM), they are not infallible. A unnoticed weak spot in the battery during production, that cracks after stress/pressure/heat can cause them to turn into a flame thrower. He properly got that one out of the million that was the lemon.

funny how we don't hear about iphone's exploding until samsung does a massive recall.

samsung doing damage control by setting iphone's on fire?? wouldn't be surprised.

iPhones have been exploding way before the Note 7 was even a thing dude

Obviously I don't recall every exploding iPhone, but the iPhones that have exploded before we from using unauthorized cables to charge or other reason; not just sitting there and catching on fire randomly.

Dude there's been cases of iPhones exploding in people's pockets since at least 2012 (probably some earlier cases too). This isn't anything new

Maybe he was sitting on the phone wrong?

I have been iPhone user as long as I could remember but TBH, the hypocrisy here is deep. When Samsung phone explodes blames everything on Samsung but when it's Apple. Everyone plays nice.."extremely rare" and blames everyone else but Apple. If we continue to let Apple get a pass and sugar code things, we would be stuck with 3.5 inch iPhone and 8/16GB storage (let's not even talk about 3 years old phone design). If it's a bad Apple, it's a bad Apple.

Huh? Samsung phones are exploding because of faulty batteries and manufacturing.

This IDIOT sat on his phone! Any battery you pierce or bend will cause catastrophic failure. Simple physics at play.

Pull your battery out of your laptop and start bending it, it will likely start sparking and catch on fire once it shorts of pierces the battery casing.

No hypocrisy. If Apple battery is were just blowing up just because people wouldn't be happy but they aren't in anywhere near concerning levels.

Out of the over 1 billion iphones sold how many total have you heard catching fire over the years? MAYBE 50 if that? A microscopic number compared to units out there.

Even in the front do you really leave the phone in your pocket when you sit down? I put the phone in my front and back pocket. Take it out either way when I sit down.

always in my front pocket. I even get a panic attack when its not. Sometimes i carry my old iPhone 5 with me as well i put this in my backpocket cuz two phones in both front pockets looks weird. So far so good. Its just a habit
