Who in the name of geeezuz would put a near $1000.00 phone in their back pocket? What a dope.

Even in the front do you really leave the phone in your pocket when you sit down? I put the phone in my front and back pocket. Take it out either way when I sit down.
I do the same. I NEVER sit with my iPhone in my pocket. That's just asking for trouble.

Maybe he forgot the phone was in his back pocket. Sheeeesh, regardless the phone shouldn't have exploded.

If it exploded if were dropped would it be ok? You aren't supposed to drop your phone?

The article states that the phone was already damaged and had a crack in it before the incident happened.

I thought phones were supposed to be able to handle cracks and not explode.
As to him sitting on it - obviously not a good thing to do - it doesn't look bent or anything on the photo.

Not saying it couldn't be a factor but it sounds like it was just a plain ole faulty battery.
Aren't the iPhone and Samsung batteries made in the same factory?

They can, but just like not every drop and crack are the same and more things could be affected (even if not really noticeable), there could be quite a bit more to the damage that the phone had already sustained at one point or another.

"I've had it for about six months. The only thing that was wrong with it was a simple crack, but I don't see a simple crack causing it to blow up in my pocket," said Hlavaty.

The phone was likely damaged previously since it already had a crack. Given that the student also kept it in the back pocket and sat on it, I'm pretty sure they weren't helping the situation. Drop-->Crack-->damaged/swollen battery-->stress from being sat on-->fire

They talk like they are trying to build up a lawsuit, but there aren't really too many damages. Apple will probably give them a free iphone 7 and they will move on happy.
