Can anybody confirm whether a TB4 cable will work with daisy chaining an original 2022 Stduio Display off a Studio Display XDR? So the original Studio Display being at the end of the chain or does it have to be a TB5 cable?

I know the cable going from the XDR to the Mac has to be TB5 however going from the XDR to the original 5K 60Hz Studio Display at the end of the chain, which I believe is TB3. Will this be fine with a TB4 cable?

Thanks
There is zero reason it should not work. What machine are you using?

So my setup is: Macbook pro M5 pro connected with TB5 cable to Studio Display XDR, and TB 3/4 cable (which was in box with original studio display) from XDR to old studio display.

I’ve read a number of threads on this and the answers are pretty mixed.

I’m using a MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro chip, can it run two Studio Display XDRs simultaneously? I understand daisy-chaining isn’t supported, but will it work if I connect each display directly to my Thunderbolt ports?

Thanks!

It will but both displays will run at 60Hz and not 120Hz. (I think)

Can anyone confirm if you can daisy chain 3 new regular (non XDR) Studio Displays to a M3 Max MBP? I know the MBP can handle them natively, but I was wondering if the M3 Max Thunderbolt 4 would be an issue? Thanks!

Three? I don't think so. I think only two per Thunderbolt port is supported.

I'm waiting for an update on my support case with Apple, but the adviser I'm dealing with admitted that the best case response to the M5 chip not supporting two XDRs is that it gets fixed in a future software update.

Where does that leave me now with a laptop I bought a few months ago which says it can support two monitors, but can't until there's a fix issued? I'm outwith the return window for the laptop but its not much use to be if it can only drive one display.

Has anyone ever found themselves in a similar situation with Apple before?

From the Apple website...

M3 Max

Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display at 1 billion colors and:
  • Up to four external displays: Up to three external displays with 6K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt and one external display with up to 4K resolution at 144Hz over HDMI
  • Up to three external displays: Up to two external displays with 6K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt and one external display with up to 8K resolution at 60Hz or one external display with 4K resolution at 240Hz over HDMI

Need help: Realized that my M3 Pro MacBook Pro would not work with 2 XDR Studio Displays, so I returned them because I was told I needed at least a M Pro MacBook Pro. I then got my company to get me a M4 Pro MacBook Pro and rebought the monitors, yet I still could not get both to come on at the same time. I even plugged both directly into the Macbook and nothing, so returning again. What am I doing wrong? FYI: Apple couldn’t help either.

Sorry to hear it didn’t work for you. I’m on an M1 Pro, and both of my Studio Display XDRs work when I plug them into the Thunderbolt 4 ports individually, so it should definitely work on yours.

Are yours cable plugged into the XDR's upstream port (the one with the dot underneath)?

Yes, I had them both in the plug with the dot. It’s a company laptop, thought that would be an issue, but my previous generations work fine. It didn’t work with my M3 Pro or M4 Pro. Did you individually change the resolution to 70 hertz?

Nope, I didn’t have to change the refresh rate, it automatically set itself to Adaptive (47–60 Hz). I only needed to adjust the resolution since it defaulted to 2560 × 1440.

The only other thing I can think of is a possible issue with the power source. Have you had a chance to check that yet?

It's in the specs. M4 Pro doesn't support two 5K 120Hz. It can do 1 at 120Hz and 1 at 60Hz, but there's a bug in MacOS that doesn't force one to 60Hz so that the other one can work at 120Hz.

M4 Max supports 2x at 120Hz.

my issue is that I can’t get both monitors on at the same time. It’s not a Hz thing, it’s a working thing.

Do you mean the power strip?

Maybe you’re not understanding. The two displays default to 120Hz and M4 Pro doesn’t support that. Two displays can work if one is 120Hz and the other 60Hz. The only way I could get both to work is to plug them directly to computer’s TB ports, unplug them from power and then plug the power back simultaneously.

I can’t speak to others’ experiences, but I didn’t need to do this for either of my XDRs to work with my M1 Pro.
