I could do that, but I would really hate to pay the 10% restocking fee since i have already used it for two days.

It's faulty so you will not pay anything when returning it. Your experience at the Genius Bar sounds awful, they should be ashamed of themselves. Don't accept their brainless judgements.

Here is a suggestion, why dont you go to the store with your friend and both have your notebooks running in sleep mode. That way it will be pretty obvious for them to see that yours is behaving abnormally. You shouldn't have to pay a restocking fee (which by the way is b****cks) for a product you are returning which isn't working as it should be, especially when you've just spent a small fortune on it.

Give this guy a break. If he chooses to put his notebook into sleep mode instead of turning it off, thats his business (why is the function provided?). It doesn't detract from the fact that his bloody notebook doesn't sleep as it should do.

Why bother bringing his friends along? The store already has these notebooks on display, so unless they keep faulty ones on display he should just compare them to the ones on display.

thanks guys for all your support. I will be talking to an apple rep real soon. I'll give some of apple's remedies a try ,such as resetting PRAM and/or resetting smc. But if none of those work, I'll have to part with an otherwise perfect machine.

Let me get this straight, you don't want to use the sleep mode in the Apple menu just close the lid and leave it. Second, you can't wait the 40 seconds it takes to start up from shut down when taking it out of the computer bag. The MBP is designed to wake up when a key is touched and carrying it around in a bag can certainly cause it to start up while carrying it. Third, you want Apple to exchange a perfectly fine machine because you cannot wait for your MBP to start up? Isn't it better to be cautious and shut the machine down when transporting in an enclosed case? After the PB G3 hinge problem, I only close the lid when needed. It may be conservative but it reduces the wear on the hinges.

I am a PC: I can go to sleep mode and when you get out of sleep mode,
all program that were running will resume their work.

I am a MBP: I am not suppose to go to sleep mode as something weird will
happen, so its better to shut myself down completely and wait
for 40 seconds or more to reboot from start up. Besides, I am
$400 more expensive than PC in average.

Steve Jobx: that's right, our MBP sleep mode is not part of the regular
function as a notebook because we think it is unnecessary to
majority of the users. So we also taught our Geniuses at Apple
Store to ignore any buyer's complain about sleep mode.

Or.. I am a PC: I can go to sleep mode, and when I wake up your mouse will not work, or your sound will be eternally muted, or your USB devices fail suddenly... or sometimes I have insomnia and I wake up in the middle of the night.

Each one has its issues. ;) My experience, anyway

It means you should exchange your PC , its defective. ;) (other users' experience)

I know you're having hardware problems but I do have to agree with the Genius that it's best to turn off your computer if you're going to put it in your backpack.

I find it really tedious to turn off the computer every time i put in the backpack and turn it back on whenever I go to my other class instead of just closing the lid and opening the lid.

And this is precisely the reason sleep mode was created. There is no problem putting it into slee in your backpack. There is no real reason to turn it off instead.
