then why not ask the customer if he wants it or not..
if you want one you can have one at no extra charge just like in the previous MBP.
if you have a 100 remotes at home.. then refuse the remote.

for most people, it's their first time to have a MAc

I'll be posting some items in the Marketplace soon, and the Apple remotes will be part of it. There are also people selling them there now so you can get one even cheaper than $20.

I agree that after spending over a grand (UK money) on a high end notebook computer, it does feel cheap for them not to bundle it in - as is not including the DVD drive attachment with the MacBook Air.

We all know how the iPod has gradually lost all of its extras in the box as it moved from luxury commodity to the mass market and I can understand that Apple wants to maximise profits in that lucrative market. I'd even understand not bundling the remote with the most-popular-Mac MacBook, but the MBP is its flagship laptop and these little things are the sort of features that you get for paying the extra.

I fully expect to use the remote a lot when my new Penryn 2.4 15" turns up hopefully on Wednesday (yep... STILL waiting...). We have no DVD player at my flat and I can't wait to be lying on my bed (at some distance to my new MBP) and controlling the DVD player. Or iTunes library, etc, etc. That's also one of the reasons why I went glossy (which I love on my dad's new iMac).

I do not think the fact that "most people don't use it" is a valid excuse for Apple.

If you want the remote so badly, buy it.
If you don't, don't.

It's that simple. Apple probably found, through some sort of market research, that most people have a remote already or don't use it very often and they found they could make more profit by not including it. Simple business sense.

thanks steve!

thanks steve!

Apple did the same thing with the ipod, when I bought mine it came with a dock etc. now it barely comes with anything. Why is this so different?

I'd much rather have a screen cleaning cloth than I would a remote.

next release of the MBP..
why not take away the extension cord for the adapter..
and ask people $20 if they want it.

or the DVI connection..

isn't that a good business idea..
let's pay for all the peripherals... since the MBP is not expensive enough!:D

i'm earning $xxx,xxx a year anyway..
i'm sorry if the rest of the members are poor!

I'd say more people use their extension cord compared to the remote, but maybe not. Apple may just stop including all those things. I don't really care, I bought the computer for the computer, not for some cheap useless remote.

If you feel so strongly about it, don't buy another Apple product until Steve decides to include the remote again.

You're trying to compare apples and oranges. You don't NEED the remote to run your machine 100%. It's a NICE TO HAVE FEATURE. I have NEVER used my remote - ever. Trying to compare it to the power cord or keyboard does not compare.

exactly..
since consumers like you don't complain.
and consider that the MBP is cheaper in UK and Australia..
here in the states we're still paying for the same price as the previous gen
even though the cost of making the current one is less than the former model.

APPLE Inc is so happy to have customers like you:D:D

It's not cheaper in the UK :/ It's exactly the same price as it was before. Which is ridiculously more than in the US! So don't try and say the poor US is getting screwed over when their prices are the cheapest.

If $20 is such a big deal to you, why did you buy a mac?

it was NEVER about the $20.

I get your point. I have the remote too. But don't you agree that a screen cleaning cloth is a lot more useful than a remote?

my point exactly

I also have a related peeve. My ibook G4 came with a VGA / DVI stubby adaptor cable, as did my PBG4.

My macbook didn't.

I wouln't mind if I could use the stubby cable from my ibook or PB, (I have five of the cables in my drawer from work) but no, the MB uses mini-DVI so I have to buy a whole new cable for £15 ($30) from the apple store.

Shopping for it was a painful experience as every mac laptop seems to use a different DVI connector, and it's not clear which one you need.

I use it all the time for connecting to monitors and to projectors for presentations, so it was a bit chinzy to see it not included with my MB. At the least, include a voucher so that you can buy a monitor adapter of your choice for cheap.

I am slightly cheered by knowing my remote came with the MB for free while you snobby MBP owners have to pay for yours :D however my remote still remains untouched in its pristine Apple wrapping

I don't really use my remote for my macbook.

I use the mess out of it with my Hifi though.

It is lame how Apple is continually trying to cut corners when they charge such a premium for their products. I reference whoever brought up the less and less we get with new iPods over the years.

Honestly, how much can that crappy IR (not even bluetooth) remote cost to produce... a few dollars at most?

Simple: that would be a logistics and management nightmare for apple. It would cost more than actually including the remote with each unit. Plus you would have serious theft issues.

No, Apple removed the remote so that those wanting one would pay for it thus creating another revenue stream for Apple

I really want some numbers on this remote issue. I am one who uses the Apple Remote frequently. Came free with my Macbook Pro and I love the accessory.

i use the remote as well.
i'm sure i'm not alone in this, but i think it's better to give the customer the remotes and leave them to decide whether they want to use it or not..
rather than making the decision for the customer, since he's not going to use it anyway, let's just charge it for those who will.

same scenario happend to the ipods.

Because people would always choose to get the remote, because it's free. Thus, Apple would lose $20 on each one.

The U.S. is heading into a recession man. Time to pad the coffers. Rough seas ahead.

That makes sense. On the other hand, part of what makes macs interesting are the weird little things that are semi-unnecessary but kind of cool (backlit logo, remote, etc).
