I've already apologised for claiming there's 'crud', phositadc, although any application which requires you do this in order to turn off auto-update, and which intermittently mounts update-related disk images, is in itself pretty cruddy.

Auto updates for bowsers is a REALLY good thing. Also you only see the disk images if you don't have a Growl like app running.

Until some other developer analyzes the code of the Chrome installer and what it does, we won't know what the Chrome installer really does :)

Wellll...lll...ll...

It wouldn't take a developer to blow such a scam apart. There are thousands of tech-savvy users out there running things like Little Snitch (or just taking the occasional peek at Activity Monitor) who will alert to any shenanigans in pretty short order.

It would be a huge risk for Google. For some scammer luring users with too-good-to-be-true "free" downloads of costly software, or for some fly-by-night outfit flogging florid pop-ups that exhort the gullible to download and install utilities of various sorts, there's less to lose since they can't be easily tracked down anyway.

But any major player would be asking for horrific commercial and legal consequences, and they can't run and they can't hide.

The burden of proof is on the accuser in that case.

Besides, the Googles of the world don't need to do anything underhanded. People offer up their online lives willingly in return for free stuff.

I conclude it isn't happening.

You think most folks have not already lost their trust? Just about everyone I know tries to avoid them. Unfortunately Google has become scum bags in the sense they sell their souls for the marketing dollar as well as info they gather from us surreptitiously.

There are many of us that have lost all trust in Google.

To be clear, I am fully aware that google uses my data for ad targeting, but also they offer top notch "free" services and since they are dependent on the future of the internet they push it with open source browsers/projects, internet rights lobbying and a call for more transparency of government intervention.

Yes, they are a company, yes they make money from your info. But that's how they are able to deliver such great web services.

If you don't trust surely you don't use google when you search I assume? And you don't use youtube for video viewing and you don't use their maps?

You don't think people have not? You realize how popular chrome is right? Especially among coders...

For search, I use duckduckgo. I watch videos on YouTube, but I always do so in Private Browsing. I don't use any of Google's services, rather I use iCloud (for its iWork suite) and OneDrive (for storage. I've got quite a good amount of space there - 28GB to be exact).

Chrome is popular because so many Windows users use Chrome, so developers usually tend to develop for the most popular one. However, most of the devs I know prefer to use Firefox.

And you know why it's so popular? Because it's the best damn browser out there!

A lot of developers use Firefox because of Firebug and Firefox has been around a lot longer.

Me too, but it looks like it was Mozilla's CEO not Firefox and he's gone now anyway.

It's considered as best because it works the fastest on Windows and most of the world uses Windows, but it's one of the worst on Mac. And most people aren't aware of what Google does to their private and confidential stuff anyway.

That's your opinion, there are many here that think google web services are crap. They seem to be a ploy to suck you into their world so they can suck as much money as possible from your wallet. Wasn't always so, but their do no harm philosophy went out the window a few years ago. For example, whenever I try google search, I have to wade through pages of marketing until I find something useful or pertinent.

The best thing about chrome is that, I think, Apple was encouraged to improve safari... which is pretty good at the moment.

A lot of a banks I use has sites that only work with IE. The rewards redemption site for Air China's frequent flier program only works in IE as well.

I think its a sign of poor customer service, a technically/financially challenged or myopic company that refuses to support a wider variety of browsers. I won't bother with them as there are better places.

I get a kick out of excluding IE browsers from some of my sites :)

Firefox is OK but does not support "natively" many of the advanced video formats, so if you want a site to work with them, you have to dumb down video features.

OP "posted and disappeared".

One thinks he would have at least posted the URL for the site that demanded IE, so that others could try it out...

I can't believe there's an active website in the whole world that will only work with IE.

There are many, many websites that are IE only. Trust me, I could give you a huge list just off the top of my head that I have to deal with... :(

Ever since I switched to Chrome. Firefox has been left in the closet.
Chrome is the best browser out there. Just need to fix the battery hogging.

If you suspect Google is doing fishy things with your info, I would imagine Mozilla and Apple to be no different.

If you're hiding like a criminal on the internet, just get off the internet?
The NSA can access your stuff no matter what you use anyways.

Chrome is big because it's fast, slick, one of the most modern browsers, easy to use, secure, has silent background updates and it had a great marketing push. I'd put it tied with Safari for the best browser on OS X.

Google tracks and collects data on you when you use any of their services not just Chrome and everyone uses Google and YouTube.

You forgot to say Apple maps ;)

I think you are in the minority, Google's strongest talent is its web services that is why Google is #1 search engine by popularity and almost anyone you talk to in accuracy, Chrome is the most popular browser in the world now, YouTube is the by leaps and bounds the most popular video server and hoster in the world.. Gmail is the top email provider on the internet.. I mean you have to not open your browser to ignore Google's web service dominance, they have shaped the web probably more than any other company. Not saying you should not avoid them that is your choice and I respect it but your claim "Just about everyone I know tries to avoid them." seems pretty unlikely.

Oh no I use Nokia Here Drive+ on my Lumia 1020.
