How are you going to get anyone to read another iPhone review when it's largely the same thing as always with a few tweaks here and there? So the tech reviewers put on a show and act as if it's either really amazing or really terrible, even though it's just as fine and adequately new every single year.

I really only trust a few. But the ones I trust also aren't completely honest as they all have to censor a lot out to keep good ties with sponsors and big brands.
I agree. Reviewers do their reviews in a million dolar set up that can rival a Hollywood studio. I have nothing against that but in doing this, they transform themselves in superstars of YT. So they become more of influencers (hate that word) than tech specialists.

I bought the iPhone 8 and absolutely loved it (£300 cheaper than the X don’t forget). And I think the glass back with no antenna lines made it look far better than the 6. In terms of specs is was a lot closer to the X than you seem to realise.

My two favorite iPhones ever were the iPhone 8 Plus(it was the latest and greatest polished final episode that started with the iPhone 6) and the iPhone 13 pro max(also the latest and possibly final episode that started with the iPhone X)

I wholeheartedly disagree with that statement. Buying a first year run of a new design car is typically and extremely dumb thing to do. Cars of a first year run of a new gen are famous for having problems.
I heard that before and I tend to believe it. First gen this or that is a hit or miss. I purchased my car when it was the first gen, Never had any troubles but Iknw of many others that bought the same car model whoo have a ton or problems. As for phones, please teller, is there such a light-year difference between a 12 and 13 that compels somebody to buy the 13 knowing that in in no more than 12 months, there will be a 14, then a 15. This madness has to stop. One cannot collect phones like that. Ok Apple and its buy back program but for God sake, someone shows me one big thing a 13 does so much better than a 12. 25 minutes more on the battery. Like a car sipping 1/8 gallon less than another and being regarded as a marvel of tech. You know that a 1975 Honda Civic could do 35 mpg. Don't you?

Everyone knows that whether is cars or phones, it’s always best to buy when there’s a redesign.

If you want to be an unpaid beta tester for sure.
If you just want something that works without fuzz and can be had at reasonable prices you go for the old model.

With iPhones there is the possibility that the 8 will be dropped from support before the X, but otherwise you have something that will be useable for just as long (till the battery is dead and not worth replacing) at a lower cost.

Those are all paid "reviewers" and Apple doesn't pay for reviews. That's been their policy since the Steve Jobs era. Samsung and Google, however, pay or outright sponsor review sites. You do the math.
Samsung even paid trolls to attack HTC not too long ago:

As I look back at the last 4 years I still vividly remember when the iPhone X came out and the various reactions. Almost every “tech reviewer” or website said you absolutely shouldn’t buy the iPhone X and the iPhone 8 was a great phone to buy. Even at the time, the average person could see how utterly stupid those “expert recommendations” were.
The iPhone 8 was probably the worst possible phone you could buy. It was on the 4th year of a cycle that began with the iPhone 6 and already looked incredibly dated. Everyone knows that whether is cars or phones, it’s always best to buy when there’s a redesign. If you had the bought the “terribly overpriced” iPhone X 4 years ago, today you would have a phone that still works perfectly and looks almost identical to the newest phone Apple has. If you had bought the iPhone 8, you would basically have an iPhone 6 that looks awfully in need of an upgrade. The iPhone X works out to be $250 a year and still looks and works great.
The lesson here is simple, most “tech review websites” and single “tech reviewers” never take time into account when recommending a phone. You should probably do the exact opposite of what they recommend or say.
I would argue the 7 was worse.

I have had an iPhone 8+ for three years now and I’m very happy with it. Best phone I’ve ever had. And I have zero interest or reason to update to something newer.

I take everything with a grain of salt, no matter who is reviewing/commenting. In 2018 when the thin iPad Pro models came out from the posts on here you would have thought it would bend if you exposed it to a strong breeze. I still use mine daily and love it.

Its important to remember there are different audiences out there. There are certainly people who value "bang for the buck"- the best tech guts at the lowest price; they value the kinds of reviews the OP referenced. At the same time, there is a "whole is better than the sum of the parts" value that apple fans in particular tend to appreciate, that these types of reviews often miss.

I disagree when it comes to cars. You never buy the first model year of a redesign as it takes a little while to iron out the kinks.

Source: I’ve bought first year model redesigns of various cars from different manufacturers using the same thinking as you and had nothing but problems. Lesson learnt.

I actually prefer getting the last model of a design. By then it's battle-tested, it's probably gotten all the features that the design can handle well. My SE 2020 is the last iteration of the iPhone 6 design. They've been making that body with only mild adjustment for years. I am very confident in their ability to do it well, reliably, durably. If this is the last year of this design language, then I'm confident now is the best time to make the switch.

Actually, I bought an 8 Plus over the X that year and even to this day I think it was an excellent decision. The 8 plus had the same internals as the X, and an effectively larger (wider) display, regardless of how Apple measured it to claim that the X had a bigger screen. 8 plus also has better battery life.
It really sounds like you were just interested in having the newer looking device.

It’s not necessarily looks, it’s how long it will last. You could get by for 4 years with either phone but the iPhone 8 would have a terrible resale value compared to the X. At least for me, the price of a new phone is a lot about the value of my previous phone, which most of the time cuts a third or more of the price.
I wonder about people who buy phones based on their "resale value". When I get a phone I use it until it no longer works several long years down the road, which means that it's resale value is zilch. Of course there are some hipsters that think they're uber cool by buying the latest thing every year.

i guess the argument could be made that the reviews aren’t for us, we follow apple like a cult. they are better suited for the general audience

Pretty much. I mean look at us posting for years on a mac forum. We live and breathe this stuff. It’s very rare to run into anyone, even an apple store employee or support, and not know more about this stuff than them. This applies to reviewers as well.

At this point you should know who’s who when it comes to reviews. Dieter for example on the verge originally was at palm central. I read his stuff because he knows his stuff.

Its a complicated relationship between reviewers and the companies whose products they review. If they want to get early test devices they have to maintain the relationship and stay on good terms. But they cannot simply shill for a company either. There has to be some honesty. A good start on the honesty front would be to declare what they received from the companies - test units, cash, other considerations, etc. Put that in the opening paragraph of the review.

The worst are the ones that just assume everyone is upgrading from the previous year's phone. Everyone out there today saying that the 13 is barely any different from the 12 is missing the point. Those are the same types who only care about putting out their reactionary hot takes in order to generate as many clicks as possible. I'll get to one of those in a minute. Jason Snell actually did a really great summary of what's different in the 13/13 Pro based on what you're upgrading from, going all the way back to the 7. Something like that is WAY more useful to the average user than the endless comparisons to the 12. Here's Jason's article: The iPhone 13: An upgrader's guide

Apple sends out early reviewer devices and if you say really bad stuff like linus from ltt said you be blacklisted from getting early access.
Linus is exactly the kind of person I was talking about. He hates on Apple left and right just to generate views. He's the biggest DB in the tech sphere.

I tend to think like you but I would like to know why you are sticking to your 8. Have you ever been tempted to upgrade in the past years?

lol what? The first generation of a redesign (cars or phones) often has issues and kinks that they eventually work out in later iterations. The last gen of a design is usually the most reliable.

For example:
iPhone 4 redesign: antennagate
iPhone 6 redesign: bendgate

I'll say this: I'm glad we can talk about these youtube "reviewers" freely on here because a lot of them are narcissistic and believe they control things and have a say in the market, due to the large followings they have. But there are a TON of people (like us included) who can see right through their algorithmic money making videos. I'd bet 98% of youtube reviewers lie. Also, Apple's numbers in sales speaks VOLUMES and they cannot wrap their head around why normal, every day people with lives; buy them. They're SOLID. They're luxurious, they're familiar, the improvements are great if you've only stuck with iPhone and ultimately: THAT BIG SHINY APPLE LOGO.

It's good to be critical of these people because they ultimately are the ones who create the toxic environment when it comes to "tech". They put things in the minds of people who click their videos (the notch, bendgate, lightning cable hate, no charger in the box, etc) ad nauseum. You can't even criticize anything in the comments because it'll get drowned out by other idiots.

I miss when youtube was more innocent like when GSMArena would do normal reviews like "hey look these are the hottest phones out right now, these are the specs, this is the hardware, very nice!"

Now you have literal cringe diary type of video reviews of them doing nOrMaL tHiNgS while using their phone. They call it like a Day in life or something stupid.

they complain about USB-C because they have to upload to their workstation and upload to youtube. the average joe doesn’t make youtube videos and couldn’t care less.

not to say phonebuff videos are pretty awesome .. so is jerry rig.. i enjoy seeing the internals
