P...Just one more stupid design choice by Apple....

But only in your opinion. I would bet if surveyed the vast majority would be indifferent/unaware and a very large minority would like the elegance of the effect. Only a tiny fraction would dislike it. Just look at your thread. So far no one but you thinks it is a "stupid design".

I wish we could wager on this in a real world setting: Stop a hundred random iphone users in Grand Central Station. Show them the dim-up versus the automatic on and ask them to choose which one they want. GUARANTEE more would prefer automatic on.

Why do you think companies that make modern lightbulbs advertise "automatic on!" (on the ones that have that design)? Because it's clearly preferrable to most people. You don't see any that boast "slow to turn on so as not to startle you or nothin'!" do you?

Unrelated and it's referring to florescent lights. What they actually mean is they don't 'flicker' on/off several times before going to full brightness. Also fluorescents without instant start can take several minutes to warm up the gas to a full plasma state and reach peak brightness, especially in a cool/cold environment.

Many cars interior lights now fade on and off as well instead of the instant on/off like older cars.

Same concept. It's annoying with bulbs, and its annoying with iphone. I'm very confident a sampling of real world iphone users asked to choose between the two styles would prefer Instant On.

*raises hand as first element of sampling*

If I was forced to choose between the two, I prefer the dim-up. In reality, I couldn't care less, as it only takes a fraction of a second and doesn't in any way affect how I use the phone. I think it's nitpicking taken to the extreme and bordering on OCD behavior.

But then again, I just use my phone - I don't sit around caressing it, inspecting it with a magnifying glass for any possible flaw, no matter how insignificant, or scrutinizing how fast it dims up, watching the battery count down to see if it skips from 61 to 59 percent, lying it on a table every five minutes and rocking it at all corners to see if it's bent, etc. I've got better things to do with my time than obsess over such insignificant things.

I didn't go looking for the problem. It jumped out at me, and then I figured out what the problem was: a distracting and annoying delay before the time was fully illuminating. I seriously thought my phone was defective.

I realize iPhone users have low standards when it comes to many such things, but at least Apple could try a little.

I have a Nexus 7 and it takes as long, if not longer, to go from sleep -> usable screen

I don't know that phone, but I guess it's possible there are a few others on the market with the same weakness. I just haven't seen it in the phones I've tried, or more to the point, my iphone 4.

Quite a leap you're making there, inferring that everybody who doesn't agree with you has low standards and that Apple not meeting your obsessive whimsy = "not trying". Have you noticed yet that not one person has agreed with you in this thread? So much for your representative sample.

I think it's more a matter of most iPhone users having more to do in life than sitting around with a stopwatch timing how long it takes for their screen to dim up and obsessing over 0.5 seconds of potentially lost productivity.

But this thread is NOT a representative sample. It's a thread comprised of people who love their iphones and all things Apple and hang around in internet forums. I assure you the real world is a different place, and I doubt even 2 in 10 real world users would choose the dim-up effect over Instant On given the choice.

Go back to Android and spare us of your incessant whining.

Yes, pointing out weaknesses and flaws is "whining". God forbid someone points out the Emperor has no clothes.

iPhone does some things well, many things poorly. If you only want to hear the good, go hang around on www.apple.com instead of here.

In the real world the vast majority wouldn't even notice something like that, and most wouldn't even care one way or another even if it was pointed out to them. That's the majority of the real world.

Still waiting for you to point out a weakness or flaw. So far all you've done is whine and stomp your foot about your obsession over an insignificant feature that isn't the way you'd like it to be, which nobody else to this point has agreed with. That's not a weakness or flaw - that's called personal preference. It's no different than somebody complaining that the antenna fillers on the back of their Space Gray iPhone aren't a dark enough tint of gray to suit them, and calling it a flaw or weakness.

I noticed it and it bothered me. I'm sure I'm not the only iphone user in the world to feel this way. And I guarantee the majority of real world users would choose Instant On over Dim-up if given a choice. And I think you know this too, which is why you are changing it to "most people won't care" (that Apple made a minor change for the worse.) And that may be so -- but it doesn't mean dim-up is as good as instant on.

The weakness and flaw is the dim-up effect. Have you not been following along? When one presses the power key to find out what time it is, and they have to wait even a fraction of a second and watch the annoying dimming up, THAT is a weakness.

What iphone weaknesses and flaws are you people going to defend next, the outgoing text message sound that can't be turned off? The lack of a notification light? What?

I'm confused as to why you even still have an iPhone when this small of an effect on the phone is causing you such massive distress.

Not really sure you can guarantee anything like that. There would be plenty of people who might like that effect (just as there are many people who like animations and parallax and all that, even though there are plenty who don't and would rather not see all that unnecessary to them movement). So, while there certainly would be some who would like one over the other, there would be many would would like it the other way, and then there would likely be even many more who still wouldn't care about it one way or another, even if given a choice. So certainly not a chance of any guarantees that could be made, despite how obvious it might seem to someone (given that many obvious things to some are not necessarily the reality of it all).

It's not a "weakness" or "flaw", it's just your OCD acting up.

Really? That little sound bothers you also? You do realize that it goes away if you mute the phone, right? Again, not a "weakness" or "flaw" - simply OCD/personal preference.

The lack of a notification light? What?
I owned two different Blackberries before coming to the iPhone and I thought the notification light was one of the stupidest, most useless features anybody had ever thought of. I've read previous threads here and I guess I can understand why some people might want it, but personally I can't think of a much more useless feature I'd not want to ever see added to the iPhone. On my scale of 'wants', it ranks somewhere well below Apple adding tail fins, a glowing Apple logo or carrier branding to the phone.

At this point the OP is just talking in circles, most likely just for the attention, so I'll be bowing out of the thread. Nothing useful is going to be accomplished here.

I'd wager a thousand dollars on it. You near New York? Meet me in Grand Central and we will poll 100 passing iphone users which one they like better, the instant on of the iphone 4 (and most modern phones) or the dim-up of the iphone 6.

This offers applies to anyone, by the way.

You're kidding, right? Having to put my phone on mute just to kill a sound that shouldn't be there in the first place is an acceptable workaround to you?? "Why not just forgo actually hearing your alerts and calls and putting it on mute? Problem solved!"

The failure to acknowledge obvious and basic flaws and weaknesses of the iphone just because Apple made it is insane.

If you want to make a case for iphone being better than Android despite its flaws and weaknesses, go ahead and make it. But don't defend the indefensible.

Lol, you realize that you are most likely literally insane, right??
I've NEVER experienced anyone foaming and frothing at the mouth over less. Willing to meet up with strangers & wager $1,000 to "prove" your point?? These are psychotic notions. As much as I would love to take your money; I would NEVER meet up with you as you are clearly both delusional & slightly unhinged. It is obvious that you are on your own... sure you may find a few "yes men" here, but if after TWO PAGES of replies you have precisely ZERO people that agree with you in the slightest... & this does NOT trip any warning bells in your mind, I personally would really recommend getting your issue diagnosed.

No offense intended. I'm genuinely concerned for the health and safety of you and those around you.

Yeah, I'm literally insane because I point out flaws in the iphone.

Sounds like a guy whose afraid to put his money where his mouth is… If you had the conviction of your beliefs, you wouldn't be afraid to wager on them. You must realize I'm right about what most people would choose, but why admit that when you can just attack me personally instead?

What a "poll" like that would more than likely show (aside from being far from anything scientific or statistically meaningful) is that quite a few people, if not most, wouldn't even really notice the difference, even when shown, and even if they would they still wouldn't really care one way or another. What it will also likely shoe is that there will also be some who will like the very slight and quick dimming effect as to them it adds some more slickness to their phone, as do various animations and parallax effects in the opinions of some. So certainly nothing even close to everyone wanting it one way or another, let alone any absolute guarantees of anything like that.

But if and when you might do that excitement feel free to let us know of the results (with evidence), just for fun.

I love the fade up effect, the first time I saw it, after installing the beta, I thought I was holding a new phone.

Many modern interior lighting now fades up instead of instant-on and I'd like the trend will stay for a while. It's sad the Philips hue now goes instant-on because of party poopers, it adds elegance and style.
