How'd you go from 3.1 to 4.2.1? I got to the SHSH blobs on my new iPad and it failed. Grrr.

Me?

From what I read I just got lucky.

It locked up for a bit at approx 90% when the apple showed. I just let it sit and a while later it was all good.

I just tried this on a ipod touch 4g 3.1 and got the same error.

The jailbreak monte process failed.

Its possible that your SHSH blobs aren't on the Cydia server.

Anyone have any suggestions? I have the correct files for the ipod.

TIA!

thanks for the post
I'll give this method a trial

I'm not able to jailbreak untether my ipad
i went to all the steps i.e.

restore to 4.2.1 on itunes
launch redsnow
install cydia with complete update
launch redsnow - boot tethered
install OpenSSh ( i found this step when the OP's steps didn't work for me)
launch redsnow - select jailbreak monte tethered
attach the 4.2b3 firmware

but herein lies the problem when i go into DFU I'm no longer booting tethered which i think is the reason why I'm not able to complete my untethered Jailbreak.

PS: I used Terminal on my machine to access the ipad so i know OpenSSH is installed and communication is possible, so what gives.

Thanks OP for the post. IT worked well, and here's what I did (a little bit differently):

1. My hosts file had "74.208.10.249*gs.apple.com" (don't know if that mattered)
2. Put iPad in DFU, opt-restore to 4.2.1
3. Let iPad restarted when connecting to iTunes, and it activated
4. I did not continue with setting up the iPad with iTunes
5. Ran redsn0w_mac_0.9.7b6
6. Followed instruction and linked to the 4.2.1 ipsw
7. I then clicked BOTH "install cydia" and "Jailbreak Monte (untether)" and linked the iPad1,1_4.2_8C5115c_Restore.ipsw as directed.
8. Redsn0w did its work, restarted, and all good.

Update
sorry this might not be a solution for some as it requires 2 machines.

My ipad is finally jailbroken untethered but i had to use 2 machines to complete it.

on the imac i did the following:
1. Opt + restore to 4.2.1
2. launch redsnow and install Cydia (this took me a couple of trials, don't ask me why)

on the mbp
3. Launch redsnow and install Jailbreak Monte
et voila

I was able to do it all in one shot by checking BOTH "install cydia" and "Jailbreak Monte (untether)". Any one else tried it?

now i have shsh blobs for 4.2.1 and i cant run the untether jailbreak

How about some details...
- which iOS you are on currently, was it jb?
- how far did you get? what was the issue/error?

[Update] I've prepared a more detailed documentation on how I performed my jb. PM me if you want it.

Hey guys, I've been attempting to apply this Untether JB to my iPad running 4.2.1 and have run into a bit of a brick wall. My understanding is that I need the 4.2b3 SHSH blobs to show up on Cydia, and to do that I need to use TinyUmbrella. According to TinyUmbrella the 4.2b3 SHSH blobs are not available anymore, is there any other way to obtain them? Thanks in advance.

Yah, I'm a little confused too. Everything I've seen says you need the beta firmware, but users here are saying they just used the 4.2.1

I do have the 4.2b3 blobs stored, is that good enough to avoid the beta firmware download?

No, you can only get the blobs during the time period Apple is signing them. That's the point of having the blobs saved on Cydia, so when Apple is no longer returning the blobs, you can point to Cydia to get the information instead.

Unfortunately, if you are on 4.2.1 then the only jb option as of now is the tethered option (if you do not have any previous blobs)

If you have the 4.2b3 (NOT the 4.3b2) saved on Cydia... AND
- Access to a Intel Mac
- 4.2.1 and the 4.2b3 firmware (redsn0w will prompt for both firmware during the process)
- 4.2b3 saved on Cydia

You should be able to install the untethered version just fine.

Remember, the untethered version has issues... like with iBooks.

Also, if you have WiFi Sync running on the Mac at the time of the applying the JB, the process will hang. So you have to run the uninstall script for WiFi Sync.

I got it, thanks all. I had the blobs and the firmware still. Cheers. Nice to have browser changer back again.

What's the iBooks issue?

What's the iBooks issue?

Purchased iBooks do not load. It prints an error message.

Also if you have Skype you'll need to do...
1) Install 4.2.1
2) Install the tethered JB
3) Install the untethered JB (run Monty)
4) Install Skype
4) Re-run the untethered JB (re-run Monty)

There are also also issues some people are running into with MSN and some other apps. This is still a beta JB.

Some people are complaining about battery life.... but I think it's generally the people upgrading from 3.1 where there was no multi-tasking. Now in 4.2.1 there is, so you have to be a little bit more aware of what is running in the background.

I untethered jb with redsn0w_0.9.7b6, and no problem with Skype. Just updated, jb, set up as new device, and reinstalled all apps including Skype. No re-jailbreaking required.

Sorry... You are right. You need to have Skype installed before the Monty... else you just re-run the jailbreak.

No, I jailbroke the iPad (install Cydia, and Monte jb) in one step. Then, reinstalled all apps including Skype.

[EDIT] I did an update (restore) from 3.2 to 4.2.1, then I set it up as a new device, which erased all my apps from 3.2. Before I reinstalled any apps, I took care of the jb. Finally put all the apps back in.

Yep I am assuming you already had Skype installed BEFORE the Monty... hence the re-install. Or did you install a fresh copy of Skype after the Monty?
