Wow, it's been awhile...

I generally keep my distance from foods that require that much effort to eat. (Naturally, exceptions are made for artichokes.) I do enjoy de-shelled sunflower seeds on my salad though. :)

I eat the shells.

I also eat peanut shells  A few years ago, my boyfriend was on tour and became good friends with an English guy. The night I met him we were eating peanuts and he was appalled that I ate the shells and asked if it was an American thing. Nah, just a weirdo thing!

OH MY GOD I LOOOOVE ARTICHOKES!!!

Do you stuff them with breadcrumbs and cheese?

I tried eating sunflower seeds when I was a kid and they gave me really bad headaches. I figured I was probably allergic to them and haven't eaten them since.

I'm munching on aBig Bag of David's regular right now!! I suck the salt, shell them and spit!! It keeps me aways fromt he candy, chips and bad snacks. I can go throught a whole bag if I've got a good novel on the weekends!!!

I use the Planter's. David's when the store is out of Planter's.

Whole cheek full, separate and eat seed, empty shell into other cheek. Spit into trashcan beside desk and reload.

Did I mention that I haven't smoked in four years? :p

7 oz bag == 630 calories.

I did notice that if I eat Sunflower seeds I keep away from eating junk/candy. And that's a good thing for me right now.

Everybody seems to raving about the BBQ seeds, I guess I'm gonna have to go pick some up.

Agreed, I usually avoid foods which require more time and energy than the nutritional value they provide - also too messy, and too much hassle!

I'm going to have to disagree with the idea that sunflower seeds are healthy. An average serving of the little things has 14-22 grams of fat, and the nutrition facts don't list any unsaturated fats, just a few grams of (gasp!) saturated fat.

That said, I love eating sunflower seeds. There's a new brand called Zotes that has some interesting flavors. There's one called (i think) fully loaded nachos that are really good. Also, there's a brand called Giants with seeds that are much larger than normal and a LOT easier to eat.

Sunflower seeds whole, always have, always will. Hell, I have a friend that eats peanuts that way. Ugh.

Artichokes, my best method (doing them this way today, as a matter of fact):
  • Top the choke (cut about a half inch or so from the top, just exposing the actual choke)
  • Trim the stem
  • Snip all the leaf ends
  • Good douse with lemon juice
  • Wrap in wax paper, put in a covered casserole
  • Nuke three minutes, rest five, nuke three more.
  • Move to fridge to chill
  • After chilling, split them in half lengthways
  • Put the halves in a big baggie with more lemon juice & olive oil, toss to coat
  • Grill with favorite meat (to soak up the smoke), leaf side down first until brown, then turn. Grill another few minutes until the inner half is GBD
  • Serve with melted lemon butter

Simpler method, when you get to the nuking part, nuke for five minutes, rest five, nuke five, rest five, eat.

I love sunflower seeds but I stay away from them because I'm likely to demolish a whole bag

Just don't mix too many sunflower seeds and alcohol. Had a guy come into the ER claiming he had eaten a large bag of sunflower seeds and drank alot of beer (was fishing).

Had to be, ahem, "manually disimpacted". Thank god I have large hands!
