I would have preferred them to charge $9.99 from the get-go so I could buy it once and then my wife could download it via family sharing and have it too. I believe in-app purchases do not work with family sharing. I played the trial version and it is a pretty fun game but I am not sure yet if I want to pay $20 for both me and my wife to have it on our devices.

As with other apps that are unlocked via an IAP, you can restore the purchase on your family member's devices by logging on with the ID that has made the purchase. When you try to purchase it again, it will say you already own it. You do have to sign up for a Nintendo ID on each though, because this is how your progress is sync'ed and saved.

Yeah, I know that this would work, but we don’t want to share our Apple ID passwords with the whole family. That’s part of the reasons why we switched to Family Sharing. Every member is responsible for the own password, and can change it whenever there is a need.

Look for my recent posts. It's really easy to enjoy the full game for free (by only paying once the 9,99) on multiple devices and on multiple Apple IDs

I assume you’r talking about the same "solution" @iosuser mentioned?

So log into your phone with you iPad's ID, then download and restore purchases. This is what everyone did pre-family sharing. You should know that.

Hahaha, I do know dude. And you should know that this is a workaround that (1) simply isn’t doable if password are not shared between members and (2) wouldn’t be necessary if the full Mario game was no bloody in app purchase.

I was fully prepared to spend the $10 for this game blindly, but the game is quite boring. The challenge of getting the different coin types was "meh" at best. Now, give me an emulated Super Mario World or the like and I'll change my tune. Is it that hard to comprehend what the masses want? Why do you think emulators are still insanely popular?

Ever tried to play any old platformed with on screen controls? It is terrible.

  • Make the free part last through World 2
  • Make the full version cost $2.99
  • Do not require an internet connection
  • Add 2x as many levels as there are currently, with more promised on the way
  • Let the user somehow run left, if only for a few seconds
This would have almost definitely doubled the success of this app. Just sayin'.

Well this is not unique to Nintendo. Every app that is unlocked via IAP has worked this day since the advent of IAP.. My guess is Nintendo really would like for you to purchase it on each device like they have been enjoying on their own hardware for years.

If you follow the second set of steps I posted earlier, you can then install the game with your individual family members' own ID and still enjoy the game. This might've been unintentional by Nintendo, linking the IAP status with the Nintendo ID, thus allowing you to unlock the full game installed from an Apple ID that has not made the IAP. It might be a loophole that Nintendo can close on their server end.

Changing the price to $2.99 would not make a difference. The majority of the people complaining are people who have decided that they will never pay for a mobile game. Whether it is $9.99, $2.99 or $0.99 people will complain about it and still not buy it.

I agree with the always online thing.

RE running left... you can in some places. But that restriction adds to the fun and the skill of the game :D

Additional steps to get this on your other family member's devices:

1 - if the family member's device is logged in to the app store with their own Apple ID, log out and log in with your ID that has already made the IAP. *Critical* step so that you're not charged $9.99 again.

Yeah, that’s how we used to handle "family" purchase back in the days before Family Sharing was a thing. There’s one problem with this approach though, every family member has to know the password of that main account to do a purchase or to setup an iOS device.

One of the main benefits of Family Sharing for us is that everyone in the family is responsible for the own Apple ID and its password, can change it whenever there’s a need.

Think of how much their share price would go up if they released a Nintendo backed emulator for iOS with all the old classics for sale at $1.99 each.

Nintendo shot themselves in the foot on this one. Someone should teach them the basic rules of economics.
You're right.
Basic rules of economics... on mobile: Consistent and persistent IAP is how you make money.
History has proven mobile gamers overwhelmingly prefer being bled out over time because they don't pay attention to the $1 today, $1 Friday, whoa a special - 4X the coins for $3.99 on Sunday. Wash, rinse, repeat. Add it up at the end of the year, they could have gotten an AW, or iPad.

Nintendo shouldn't have wasted time trying to stop pirates. Not worth the headache and not worth the negative effect it has on people who want to buy the game. From an economic standpoint, they should have gone with the tried and true microtransaction route. It's where the long money is. It's not what I prefer, but it's economically proven to be a sound strategy.

There are plenty of old emulator games. They are terrible because on-screen controls do not work for platform games.

When playing a Mario game it is crucial to be able to feel the controls and press them with almost pixel-perfect timing. This doesn't work for on-screen controls.

Well, you can do it for them instead of tell them your password.

Yes I would've highly preferred if this was a straight purchase and not an IAP. IAP is the next worst thing next to the free to play model.. The NID loophole I outlined earlier solves this, so that your family member's devices can get the app update without the app store prompting you to enter your Apple ID and password. Until Nintendo closes this loophole that is...

How often do you find yourself with no internet connection on your iPhone? Either cellular or on wifi?
For me, I am without internet about 5-10% of the time when I am at work.

But more importantly, what about people that bought this to play on their iPad without internet.

As for the Mario game, the internet requirement is dumb, not being able to use the family sharing is dumb, the price is the only thing reasonable (depending on the length of the game and/or replay value).

Having a crap load of in-app purchases, and in-game currency that is hard to get or time based is so much worse than the one-time purchase system imo.

I haven't played the Mario game, but was excited about it at one point. I thought is was going to be on the ATV4, which sadly it is not.

Sure, it’s not unique to Nintendo at all. All I’m saying is that I wish back the days pre IAPs & Family Sharing, where I simply bought the full game and was able to simply download and play it on all the family devices.

ok,, that's allot, now how many have actually unlocked the worlds?

40 million downloads is good and all, but that doesn't prove anything,,, it could be for any number of reasons... people testing it, didn't like and deleted it..

I wanna see the real figures of people actually payed to complete the game. They're the real hero's in all of this. :)

Absolutely. I would not be playing any full blown platform games on a touchscreen where absolute precision movement is required.

I only downloaded it on two of my iPhones so that I could get it working on a Jailbroken iPhone which I did. I've since deleted it and will not pay $9.99 for any game and I don't play games on anything.

Nintendo and Apple are two of my favorite companies.

I haven't bought Mario Run yet but I will... might wait for the Android version though.

LOL @ people in here telling Nintendo how to price their app that has made them $21,000,000 (based off that estimate in the OP, probably higher) in 4 days.

The game is legit good for a smartphone game.

40M downloads, 8% conversion rate at $10 a pop.

That's the picture of a unprecedented hit to me, or are we living in a weird parallel dimension?

I agree.

I bought the remake of the NES Ducktails game to play on my iPad. It was very hard to get used to the on-screen controls. I managed to adjust to it and beat the game, but I think it would have been much easier on some type of controller.

I tried playing the tvOS version of Ducktails using the Siri-remote, and that was impossible. The ATV4 should have came with a gaming remote.

The negative reviews based on price are stupid, and are a direct result of Apple's inexplicable choice not allow demos and trial periods of apps in the App Store, which has resulted in ugly workarounds like free versions plus paid version, and In App Purchases to unlock the full game (which makes the Free sticker price basically a lie).

Here's how it works now:

Nintendo want to allow a demo/trial period, but Apple won't let them. Therefore Nintodo offer the app for free. It appears in the App Store with a price of Free, but a small note saying it offers in app purchase. People can download it, play three levels, then pay to unlock the rest. Anybody who's done this can review the app, since it's now in their library, even if they chose not to pay.

Here's how it should work:

The app is offered in the App Store for its full price, with a note saying "Free demo available". People can choose to download the demo, knowing in advance what the full games costs, and can't leave a review if they haven't bought the game.

This would simplify the situation for everyone involved, it would avoid the annoying experience of finding out that you haven't downloaded a full game at all, or of not knowing in advance what the game will cost, and would prevent people leaving reviews that aren't really about the game itself.
