Yep. Sadly, people are happier paying $100 over a year than $10 all at once.

Goodbye, single-priced apps of the future.

I hate this whole affair is just giving more fuel to that conclusion.

I would happily pay $10 for this game...if I meant I could play it on more than one of the devices I own. I'm not paying $10 per device.

I find it funny that Pokémon go had a dramatically positive effect on its company stock price and this release has dropped Nintendo's stock price. I agree that they shot themselves in the foot with this one. I understand why you need always-on internet for Pokémon go. Absolutely moronic to have that on a game like Mario. Nintendo isn't preventing any piracy. They're just pissing off their customers

I neve really understood running left on any Mario games. They should only be about getting as many coins as fast as you can. Don't you think that makes them more challenging anyway? As soon as you can run back left, you're trying to create some kind of exploratory game out of a 2D platformer. Makes no sense.

I'm personally really liking the core gameplay. The collect the colour coins is classic Mario end game and really addicting. Im not in into the Rush or town building stuff as its pretty boring but the actual game is A+
They should have stuck to the core experience and charged 2.99 but I'm happy paying £8 as its the price of a kebab and chips.

Now, give me an emulated Super Mario World or the like and I'll change my tune. Is it that hard to comprehend what the masses want? Why do you think emulators are still insanely popular?

There are plenty of old emulator games. They are terrible because on-screen controls do not work for platform games.

When playing a Mario game it is crucial to be able to feel the controls and press them with almost pixel-perfect timing. This doesn't work for on-screen controls.

I agree with the iOS on-screen controls not working as well on most NES games, but I think an ATV4 emulator would work, and would probably help Apple sell some more ATV4s.

Nintendo could release their own tvOS controller to use with the emulator too.

If this ever did happen, I just wish that the original TMNT game was available on it, as the Nintendo virtual console version is no longer available.

Nintendo shot themselves in the foot on this one. Someone should teach them the basic rules of economics.

I really hope they release how many people paid for the content. 5 of my friends did without any complaints. When you have 40 million downloads, even 10,000 people complaining is going to sound pretty loud, but it is just a fraction of the installed base.

I love the single pay pricing. This game earned a spot on my main home screen, and not even buried in a folder. It will stay there until I have beat the game and exhausted myself trying to get all those da** pink coins. Well done Nintendo. I would take a few more hybrid titles like this. I very much dislike IAP.

Lol, no, it wasn't engaging enough to re-do the handful of level just to capture some of the colors. Its just not a good game imo.

Yeah I get the challenge is there. But I'd rather have that challenge manifest itself across more level variation or new pieces of a level appearing for a new challenging pathway...not...playing the exact same level 30 times with coins in just different spots?

I could see $3-5 for that type of game, for $10 I would hope updates and a roadmap for more content, not Nintendo saying "you need this, it's Mario. Pay us the premium, and enjoy the one or two game modes while we work on sub-sufficient consoles to release and make for a year."

3DS is where it's at for me if I'm going to give Nintendo my money, it's just SO clear that's where their care and attention still lies for the time being.

I am not sure I agree.

NES Zelda 2, Metroid and TMNT, they were 2D platformers that required left and right movement. All three of those games are better than any Mario game imo.

There are other platform games that went left too.

Nintendo does not understand the NA gamer anymore. They are still using the Japanese commercial mindset.
They still think that NA gamers want to carry around multiple devices, while in reality we have our smartphones and that is it.
If this would have been a full blown Mario platformer where you could control every motion of Mario then people would plunk down $9.99. Nintendo needs to get out of the portable hardware field and just make games for Apple and Android devices.

Meanwhile, a super mario run retro gamepad is in the works ...

Fastest to 25 million downloads and highest grossing in the App Store.

Yup, the people of MacRumors are right, this thing was a total failure.

I am not a serious gamer, and I probably wouldn't even consider my self a gamer. I only like retro games, and don't play anything new, so maybe I do not fit the person you are describing.

But, I don't think NA gamers want their games on their phones. Besides the fact that the on-screen controls suck for many console games, I would question if a $10 or less game would have the quality of a full priced game.

Again, I am no longer a gamer, so I could be totally out of the loop.

What about on the subway, on a plane, or any time you travel and don't want to pay for international data?

You know it doesn't need 100% of the time continuous internet right? It just checks in on occasion.

You do realize that the entire New York subway system has wifi as do almost every other major subway system in the US and Europe?

As the previous comment mentioned, even when traveling internationally you'll still be able to get on wifi on occasion.

That's the point though. The levels for each coloured coin are different. Not just that they have different block placement in them. Some of the levels change significantly between the pink, purple and black coins.

40M downloads, 8% conversion rate at $10 a pop.

That's the picture of a unprecedented hit to me, or are we living in a weird parallel dimension?
Numbers are good, particularly for a mobile game; but in the general gaming market its hopelessly far off. Earlier this year Overwatch had 7 million buyers in week one - which was a far more expensive game. A lot of these were digitally sold by Blizzard themselves; which don't incur any store costs.

If we look back a few years - then the 800 million USD day 1 sales of GTA 5 is laughably far ahead.

Similar numbers have been posted by quite a lot of other 'core' titles. On Nintendo's side - Pokemon S/M did not do much worse in quantity in the same timeframe - but far better on revenue.

How frequently does it check for an internet connection? Does it boot yo out of the game when it doesn't find one? Like billions of people of this planet, I don't live in the US or Europe. Depending on random public wifi when travelling is no ideal, and there's still the issue of playing on flights. Basically, none of this is good for people who travel/commute regularly.

FYI, I gladly paid for the game within hours of its launch, but requiring an internet connection is really dumb, and is justifiably costing Nintendo sales.
