what have you lost by using family sharing? $10, because you didn't know that in-app purchases are not something you can share with the other family accounts? what other negatives do you have about the feature?

Dear Denny, I was totally aware that you can’t share in app purchases between members when I decided to switch from a shared Apple ID to the Family Sharing setup. I made the switch because I really liked that every member is responsible for the Apple ID and the password to make purchases.

But back then IAPs were also rather new and I usually bought the full version with the app purchase itself. Lately it seems like more and more apps are offered with this stupid full version IAP model and it’s something that worries me a bit. Mainly because our family shares the iPads.

There are other things that I wish Family Sharing would do better. I see no advantage in the automatically added Family folders added to apps for example, as I prefer to set them up how our family needs them. You can’t get rid of them.

Let me ask you, what advantages do you see in Family Sharing? Is there anything I’m missing that can’t be done with “normal” sharing between Apple IDs? In the photos app? What’s your reason that you’d recommend it over using a shared Apple ID for purchases?

so the only other negative you had was that it adds a Family folder to some apps?

i love family sharing. my girlfriend and i use it. i have a ton of itunes purchases, like movies, tv shows, etc. And she's able to download and watch those on her own devices under her own apple id. we also use the family folder in the reminders app so we can both add things to, say, a grocery list; very convenient.

I really wish people would stop using this argument. It's not about the fact that it costs money. It's about the fact that it is stupidly overpriced.

I never said everyone had to like every app ever.

For example, I don't even play rpg games but I'd welcome a good rpg game that brings more interest to my platform of choice.

Me not liking a specific game doesn't invalidate the argument. No one is going to buy everything.

I'd pay $10 for this as a straight app price if:

There were a "go back" swipe control.
They didn't try to piggyback their own sign-on onto the app, thus requiring a sign-on for each device with the same Apple ID.
Not require an online connection.

As it is, no dice, and none of that was implemented by Apple.

Yes!

40 million downloads * $10 = $400 million

4 billion downloads * $0 = $0

They blew it. Should be 10 worlds. Initial purchase of game should have been $2.99. To get the 5 additional worlds should have costed $2.99. They could have kept adding content from there.

That whole model doesn't make sense though. Why would they release a game that required them to continue development on it after release? They made s finished game. Any money they make brings down the cost and they don't have to add (much) more time to it.

Especially for a company like Nintendo. They have other things to work on. For companies with one game that is doing well they need to rinse that game for literally everything they can so maybe a constant update would work for them.

Erm… you don’t need Family Sharing to share a folder in reminders app. And sharing between accounts is also possible if you use the same Apple ID for all purchases, only that you’d then also be able to share all in app purchases.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the concept of Family Sharing, that’s why I switched all our devices from the shared purchases Apple ID to it. It would be nice if Apple would allow developers to make certain IAPs family sharable. I am also waiting for a multi user login on iPads.

i would never want to share an apple id with somebody.

Interestingly, you can share an Apple ID for store purchases, but keep separate Apple IDs for iCloud (and everything else). My spouse and I do it this way, which gets around the limitations of Family Sharing and allows us to share IAPs. Works great. Highly recommended.

I do it this way as well ... mainly because it was the only way to do it prior to Family Sharing. I haven't switched over to Family Sharing because I don't want to break what I have now and I don't see any real benefit for my situation. Maybe when my kids are older, I'll change my mind.

One thing that I can think of with sharing the AppleID for iTunes/App Store, but separate AppleID's for iCloud is that Apple Music is tied to the iTunes/App Store. So if I were to subscribe to Apple Music, my wife and I would have to share stations and recommendations. Not a big problem, but we have different tastes in music.

Not sure if I could sign up with a Family membership if we don't use Family Sharing. I'll have to look into that.

what are the other "limitations" of family sharing? or was that an accident, making that plural?

and what if you guys wanted to play multiplayer games that would require you both to have your own account for itunes/app store? my girlfriend and i play games together all the time but we wouldn't be able to if we had a shared account

I might be wrong, but at least for the games I play, the developer has separate game accounts that have nothing to do with your AppleID.

In Golfstar, Com2Us "encourages" players to use a HiveID.
In Mario Run, each person would create a NintendoID.

we play clash of clans

This has led to concerns over the game's one-time payment model
They're mad because it's not freemium BS as usual. Well, suck it. Anyway, the game doesn't look very good, so that's a reason to be worried. Don't want to dilute the brand.

I think iOS 10 broke this, or at least I couldn't figure it out after fiddling with it for a bit. You used to be able to select your Apple ID for the App Store and iTunes (and, implicitly, the Music app) separately from within the apps, but I think they're linked now.

I don't play it, but the Clash of Clans website says it uses Game Center for multiplayer. You could use your non-shared Apple IDs, since Game Center is handled separately from the App Store.

And it uses your AppleID? I'm unfamilar with how they do it. I wonder if they use GameCenter.
they do. i'm sure a lot of games do. so, i don't want her playing a game that I'm playing and having her just pick up where i left off then i go back to play and i'm 5 levels further than when i last played; no thanks. it's also nice to have the discounted apple music. forgot to mention that.

What's wrong with that? Put 5 programmers on it, make millions...

or we could just use our own apple id for whatever we wanna do. no confusion there :)

Right, but you were specifically asking how it worked for the case I described, so I looked into it and let you know. If you didn't care, why ask?
