My 3 year old and my 5 year old both beat the game before easy mode.

Did they find all the coins? Doubtful. Therefore, they didn't do anything besides the most absolutely basic playthrough mode.

I'm amused the author is incapable of simple math. 6.8% of people paid for the full version.

I'm even more amused that you're attacking the author for providing a direct quote as if they should be altering it somehow.

$53 million is great for their first effort. Hopefully this will continue to be an area Nintendo explores.

I love Super Mario Run. It's a fun, addictive, quick-pick-up-and-play kind of game. Totally worth the $10.

$53 million. But it will be a total failure because of the requirement for internet connection, according to MR members.

I don't think many people said it would be a complete failure - I just think people said there were plenty of small things that Nintendo could have done differently, that would have resulted in a spectacular hit rather than a "pretty good game".

To repeat my list from another thread on this, imagine if Nintendo would have done just a few things differently:

  • Price it at 5,99$, that would have made it immune from the vast majority of backlash.
  • But really, even at 9,99$, just make it a paid app instead of free + single IAP. People who hadn't been following the news in detail got upset when they hit a paywall after 3 levels, and this caused much of the 1-star reviews.
  • Always online? Hell no.
  • After I downloaded the game, the first thing I run into is a "downloading..." screen? Weird and unnecessary.
  • Include 40 levels (8x5) instead of 24 (6x4) so that people don't get that "this is it?" feeling after finishing their 9,99$ game after 2 hours. Would have not been that difficult (they're damn good at making awesome levels), they just chose to keep it very limited in order to position mobile games as much more limited than console games.
  • Yes, replay value (black coins!) is pretty damn good, we all agree on that - but making something seem shallow at first and only deep on second sight isn't a good marketing approach
  • Make the miniboss levels extra long (90 sec is short) and less repetitive (why is it every time the same koopa jr? come on, it feels like you're barely even trying)
  • One of the fun elements in classic mario games is always the secret exits / warp zones, would have been nice to have a few of those here. Again, not a difficult element to add, they just chose not to.
  • Have at least 1 powerup other than the mushroom (fire flower could have worked well with mid-air spin jump)
  • Scrap the nonsenical "kingdom building" part, focus on single player and toad rally
  • Temporary events on toad rally that actually have temporary content rather than a temporary 1.5x coin multiplier
  • For the toad rally, a few straight-up speed run levels could have been great (there's a big speed running community out there, could have tapped into that).
  • With some type of built-in support for Twitch or ReplayKit Live the above could have really been a hype.
  • When you play it on multiple devices, the game is both buggy (it crashes unexpectedly) and annoyingly makes you go through the purchase screen again to get all levels (many people won't know that Apple doesn't charge you twice for the same purchase). This could have been ironed out in testing.
  • And finally, and I know this isn't Nintendo's fault, the "NOTIFY" feature that Apple built specifically for Nintendo sucked. If I pre-order a game, I either expect some type of benefit or discount, or expect it to install automatically, or whatever. Instead I just got a late notification.

Of course not, but they beat all levels. That being said, if they get all the coins in easy mode, it defeats the purpose anyway.
In easy mode whatever you collected or acomplished is not kept, once you go back to normal mode... And the game goes back to normal mode once you reach the flag pole... LOL Easy mode is useless... even for kids...

They should have called it "Practice Mode." But frankly, it's not even that. First you have to start a level and die 3 times, which isn't that easy actually, and once you finish a level in Easy Mode, you are back in normal mode until you 'activate' it again.

It's very comparable to the "Super Guide" that appears in a number of Nintendo's console games, which is typically triggered after you fail at a level 3 times or so. It's intended to make sure players still get the challenge of the game, but at the same time aren't stuck at a certain point without hope of making progress.

No way in hell have they converted sales of a $10 game to 3/4 of the people who downloaded it.

Congratulations to all you haters! Nintendo tried to be moral and released a full game for $10 (without micro transactions) and even gave you free levels to play. Now, they delayed Animal Crossing till next year (to adjust the pricing scheme, because pay once obviously didn't work as well as they hoped). Also, the Fire Emblem game for mobile will also have micro transactions, ugh. This is why we can't have good things, because all you whiners ruined a good thing and it was just getting started.

I found it REALLY easy... Downloaded it, hated it, deleted the app. Simples.

What is an easy mode for a game that's already trivial?
So how long did it take you to get all the black coins and beat the three Special Stages at the end? [sips tea]

My 3 year old and my 5 year old both beat the game before easy mode.
When you say "beat the game" what do you mean? Completed all 72 level variants? Completed the three special stages? Unlocked all the characters? Rebuilt the kingdom? Or all of the above a la 120 stars in Mario 64?

Love the game! I could see how an easy mode might be helpful for younger players
My 5 year old has almost beaten the game as is. It's already too easy.

Personally I think this lack of challenge is a disgrace.

When I was 5 I was playing Super Mario on NES...if you wanted to be good, you had to actually try.

I much prefer buying outright than P2W. Only downside is constant internet connection. Is a fun game for $10.

Yikes!
78M downloads and only 5M have bothered to pay $50 ($10 for each person in a 5 member family) for a mini Mario game where he automatically runs on his own and all you can do to control him is jump.
With their first iOS game being an incredible flop as it was just a chat app, Animal Crossing being delayed, and the Switch being a disappointment since it focuses on games where you milk a cow, I can't say it's looking good for Nintendo.

Loved it, I can't beleive how fun and full featured it was. I got all the black coins, nearly 6000 Toads in Rally mode and bought nearly everything for my Kingdom. It was addicting fun. Well worth the $15au asking price.

Their conversion rate is actually pretty great for a mobile game.

Something to ponder, the game made $53 million. Assuming this was a full-priced handheld video game, it would equal over 1.3 million units sold. That's more than many popular titles including Bravely Default, Yo-Kai Watch, and Kingdom Hearts 3D.

I think it depends on what you mean by beat. Maybe your kid is super smart, but it took me maybe 2 weeks or so to collect all the colored coins of the three colors.

Coins you get in easy mode don't count
