I've tried bluetooth headphones for music before - I find the lag irritating with music, and impossible to watch videos.
And you assume, that there will always be lag with bluetooth audio, because Apple has no reputation whatsoever as a company who aims to reduce lag? Safari got snappier, in this very moment.

Remember when everyone complained about the Lightning Connector? Now everyone loves it.

I'm sure no one will miss the 3.5mm headphone jack in 2-3 years.

No one except the huge huge number of people who like to choose their own headphones intead of the garbagey ones that come with the phone.

Oh, and there's absolutely no comparison between chargers and headphones. Nobody spends hundreds of dollars on a really nice, high-quality iPhone charger.

This is stupid as hell.

1. No one is going to buy headphones to exclusively use with an iPhone. Headphones with a lightning port (male) aren't compatible with the other 99.9% of the products in the universe.
i would bet that the vast majority of people don't need them to be compatible with other products, just the one iPhone.

2. No one is going to carry/want an ugly adapter sticking out of the phone 24/7 just to listen to music.
why would you leave it connected to the phone rather than to your headphones?

As if you won't have choices? There are only like a BAZILLION bluetooth headphones out there to choose from.

Unfortunately that is not a passive port. The dock as a DAC and amplifier in it.

Yep, that was clarified last night. My bad.

Interesting, what kind of adapter comes with the Mac mini?

But I don't agree it will be included. It does not serve Apple's interest in doing this, per my comments above @ #757

Must I put this on every page?

Problem solved:

How much is this going to cost me on top of the base product price? Will it be as "grippy" as current audio cables are?

Bluetooth sounds like compressed garbage. Pure crap.

When was the last time you listened to Bluetooth headphones? There are many high quality Bluetooth headphones these days. The codecs have come a LONG way.

I can't tell the difference between using Bluetooth or a wire on my Beats Studio Wireless. Sounds exactly the same (and awesome). You're going to come back and say "well, that's because those suck anyway"... but they really do not. Go read independent reviews. Same goes for the new Solo 2 Wireless... they are very favorably reviewed. For instance:

"What’s more impressive is that the Beats Solo2 wireless headphones deliver sound that is consistent regardless of whether you use them wired or wireless, and that in both cases, there’s a warmth out of the box that you don’t generally get from audio equipment without a decent break-in period.

There’s no active noise cancellation here, but he ear cups do offers a certain amount of passive filtering out of surrounding sound, which is plenty for most use cases. The audio also doesn’t suffer from any kind of inherent background hiss or static, again regardless of whether you’re using either wireless or wired connection."

There are also many more high end Bluetooth headphones that sound awesome these days.

If you need more than that... then that's what the Lightning connection is for. Now you can buy headphones with a built-in, high end DAC that satisfies your audiophile needs. Way better than relying on the DAC in the iPhone...

I wouldn't hate it. Will the internet riot? Yes. Will it be an inconvenience? For a little while. Will we adapt? Absolutely. You can't expect progression from a tech company if they keep everything the same. Unfortunately sometimes you have to change the way that you operate your devices for the eventual better. If they can successfully pull off a (fully functional) wireless device, I don't see why anyone should/would be mad at it.

I think for now, the thing they'd need to include (not as a "sold separately" deal) would be a 3.5 jack adapter AND wireless Bluetooth headphones just as a standard. Also a charging pad if they're doing wireless charging, but I don't see that happening lol.

It's funny to see the development of opinion here as this story gains more and more traction. So many people have already become convinced that removing the headphone jack is going to be to their benefit when nothing could be further from the truth. Great. They save a tiny bit of space internally. Yet this is the same site where opinion is overwhelmingly in favor of making the phone thicker in order to improve battery life. Waterproof? Really? I'm on my 7th iPhone personally, we've had at least 15 in the immediate family, and I'm extremely active, outdoors a couple of hours in all weather almost every day of the year. I think I can count on one or two fingers the number of times I've had to take any precautions about water getting in the phone. It's a non-issue and there are already waterproof phones that retain the headphone jack.

Bluetooth headphones suck. You have to charge them, frequently. They sound worse. You have to deal with pairing issues and interference. We have several pairs we've tried for my wife who wants them for running. They all have issues. She uses her wired ones now.

Despite the thousands of posts written here on this topic there still has not been a single reason given as to why removing this port is good for the end user. Not a single one. This isn't at all the same as in the past when Apple removed legacy parts that were on the verge of being replaced and they just hastened their demise. There is no replacement needed for the 3.5mm jack until you can hardwire us direct to the brain. Otherwise give me one of the most robust, reliable plugs ever created without the need for an adapter that adds cost, complexity, bulk, and likely reduces quality.

Am I the only one here that will give it like 1,000 to 1 odds that Apple would give cheap earbuds for free that use the lightning connector WAY before they'd include bluetooth earbuds for free???

Are you kidding me? Am I the only one who charges his phone while at the same time watching videos or music? I AM LITERALLY DOING THAT RIGHT NOW AS I TYPE THIS!

Most days I do school in the morning, I'll watch Youtube or play a game during lunch while charging it to get it back to 50-60%, then I do more school until dinner with more charging so it doesn't die while watching videos, a little more school, and finally maybe an hour or so before bed watching Netflix or the whatever with my phone charging so it doesn't die.
Without both a headphone jack and a way to hold it while charging (so no wireless), either I have no time to watch anything or my phone's battery will die before the evening.

I don't care what new features it has, if the iPhone 7 doesn't have a headphone jack I'll upgrade to the 6s instead.
you think a company like apple wouldn't consider that? how about a splitter...

I agree. I'm surprised it's not so obvious to the general population. I think it is, people just want to play devil's advocate on the internet.

Great post. The key point being that there is no functional reason for them to remove the headphone jack, and certainly no benefit in them doing so.

Since you dismiss the two major reasons (space savings and waterproofability - both of which many people will appreciate) I will point out one more thing... In general, to Apple (and to many of us), wires and ports and things that connect by wires to ports are the enemy. They are a hassle and an eyesore.

Apple has been working toward a wire free world for a long time now. Removal of Ethernet ports, wireless keyboards and mice, lack of any ports on the Watch, dearth of ports on the Retina MacBook, championing of the e-SIM. Apple sees a wire/port free future... and the next wire/port on the chopping block is the one for headphones.

I'm not surprised, this is a apple forum where everything apple Do is justified by a certain set of people.

They could take away the screen and some people will turn it into an advantage and revolutionary idea somehow.

All removing the headphone jack does is give us, the consumers, is less options for little Bennefit but a lot of downsides.

The average consumer will be left scratching there heads when they realise there headphones won't work. Hopfully people don't give in and this fall flat in apples face. I think apple need a massive kick up the arse lately because their decisions are starting to look completely baffling.

Wireless charging would be a better inclusion than removing the headphone jack.

Removing the headphone jack for waterproofing is not needed, I wish people would stop saying this. Sony have already proved this not to be the case.

Wireless charging is next. The iPhone 9 will have zero holes in it (maybe even the 8... but I don't think they will get rid of Lightning that quickly).

I have no problems removing ports when the time is right and it makes sense. I have a retina Macbook and am perfectly happy with the single port there and the adapter I use as a single-connection docking station. Removing a port that has nothing wrong with it technically, is still used by nearly everyone on earth, and for which there are no good technical reasons for retiring, that I have a problem with. Why not just remove the phone from the iPhone since everyone just uses text and chat apps today? Got to save that space. Again, I'm fine with saving space so long as it doesn't interfere with one of the fundamental functions of the device. Again, waterproofing is not an issue. If that's a route Apple wants to go, 3.5mm jacks can be made waterproof.

Next up....the revolutionary iphone 8 with no speakers or headphone jack lol why do we need inbuilt speakers when we can Bluetooth to wireless speakers?

Since this is likely to be a popular product, I'd imagine there will be various quality versions, with many different features, at many different price points. It's entirely possible Apple will include a passthrough connector on their included "free" Lightning headphones which won't cost you anything else if you use Apple's headphones, but honestly, I don't really know how big an issue this will be for most people for Apple to include it. Only they know that. Otherwise, if we're just talking a pass-through adapter, for use with any Lightning headphones, I bet Apple will make one for under $10. If it includes a DAC, I'm thinking $19 without, and $29 with the passthrough.

Not necessary, but it certainly can't hurt. Even the Sony has a lot of "port covers" that have to be in place for it to be "waterproof". A fully sealed phone (much like the Apple Watch) will be easier to defend against water.

lol that's funny .. I can see that. Apple removes screen on iPhone 8S, now it's wireless only to an external monitor and the people will cheer posting pictures of floppy disks saying how technology moves on and Apple needs to innovate.
