I didn't really notice a difference when I handled the iPhone 6 compared to my iPhone 5. The iPhone 6 is only comfortably larger than the 5/5s.

Bring on 4, 4.7 and 5.5. That would make most people happy. 4.7 inches is too big to be practical for me.

I gave my mum my old iPhone 4S when I got an iPhone 6. Loved the large screen first but today was the first time I had a play on my old phone, and it felt great. So much more portable, feels much more sturdy. If there was a way to get those 128gb storage chips onto a 4S I'd have never upgraded!

Personally, I think they should have the 3 sizes, (4" , 4.7" , 5.5" ) something for everybody. :)

Something for everybody... to complain about.;) Cuz that's what we do. I agree with you wholeheartedly btw. From 4"-5.5" should cover most everyone's needs. Needs, hmmm, wants; to be more accurate. Then we can all denegrate the choices made by others while being completely satisfied with the correct choice that we made.:D

Terrible news. The advantages of a larger screen simply do not outweigh the advantages of a mobile device that can be used on the go.

Probably being pedantic here, but where exactly are these large screen mobile devices that can't be used on the go? :D;)

I don't understand the hostility toward those who want a more portable phone, or those who want a larger phone.

I understand more people are using their smartphones as their primary computing device, but what's wrong with offering different sizes for those with different needs? Apple already does, so why not keep the existing 4' phone? It's not like it wasn't functional for the millions of people who bought one.

My personal preference is for the 4' phone because my primary need is for a mobile phone that is compact and functions as a phone first.

As far as the argument about Apple not going backwards, offering a newer model in a different size is moving forward. Also I recall Macbook Pro laptops were sold briefly without a backlit keyboard, but it returned very soon because people said they wanted it.

Also 'Camera Roll' went away and returned due to popular demand.

You'd better believe that someone at Apple knows. If they decide not to revisit a particular form factor it is likely because they have data guiding that decision.

Exactly. People think that they know the markets better than Apple.

The iPhone 6 is just unwieldy. I want a phone that I can grip securely and use conveniently and quickly. I don't want a phone I have to baby so I don't drop it, I don't want a phone that requires two hands or hand/finger gymnastics to use. I value portability and functionality. If I want a bigger screen, I have a laptop and a TV. It's using the right device for the job.

Disappointing "news". I will never buy anything bigger than 4". The iPhone 5c may be my the last phone I ever buy.

1) You might as well upgrade to the 5s to gain Touch ID, other enhancements, and a year longer support cycle

2) Like hell you won't. Even if you never like the 4.7" size better, if that's as small as Apple goes, you're stuck. Do you really think in 2020 you'll carry around an 8 year old phone?

That's why I think Apple may not keep the 4" size. It's more costly to keep 3 sizes than to keep 2, and people will be forced to live with it. iPhone users wanting bigger phones were defecting to android. Users wanting smaller phones are MUCH less likely to defect to android simply because the only 4" android phones are the $100-$200 cheapy phones. That's not exactly the Apple user MO.

Apple has made it very clear that they aren't going backwards and that they are moving forward. I may not like it but I respect it...

But screen size isn't always progress, it's a design choice.

It's why I find Samsung's attitude so annoying. Each phone bigger than the last, so people assume they're better, before even looking into other features.

Exactly. Too many people think bigger is better. We should all be driving tractor trailers around!

The iPhone 6 is unwieldy? Really? I would agree if you said 6 Plus. I was/am a heavy one handed user and was expecting to hate the 6. Honestly I can use it quite comfortably with one hand.

Rumor is that the Galaxy S6 will have a 5.5" screen.

That's well into Galaxy Note territory.

It makes me wonder what Samsung has planned for the Note series... 6" ?

I know this is TMI, but watching porn on a 4" screen is not enjoyable. Its actually pretty awesome on the the 6 Plus. I don't know how I survived on the 3.5" iPhone. Goodness.

RIP Steve Jobs & One-handed use

Image

The iPhone 4 design was in development from before release of the first iPhone in 2007. So we have no idea how old the design of the iPhone 6 is.

Next, what was Steve Jobs' parting advice? 'Do what's right.'

What did Steve Jobs say at D8? 'If the market tells us were making the wrong choice, we listen to the market.' 'Were just people trying to run this company.'

It's time to move on... to a non-Apple phone.

I love the irony that Android phones are now where to go for a smaller phone that can be used with one hand.

'hmmm... deal with a slightly larger phone (i6) that's unnoticeably different after a week of use, or switch ecosystems entirely because i miss that icon being 2 cm closer than it is now... what to do, what to do...'

Samsung don't want to be less than Apple in any respect, and as there's an iPhone thats 5.5 inch, that's what the S6 will be, too.

And yes, the Note 5 will be 6 inches, like the new Nexus, I reckon.

I also heard Samsung is working on a payment service. No, I'm not joking.

Apple needs to come up with a set of gauntlet gloves that impart man hands on the part of the wearer. With touch sensitive fingers.

Exactly, but those of us who own our own house get to watch it on a massive tv screen, we also get to drive to work in a car, instead of public transport and I want another 4S sized device.

I don't want Android OS simply because of Eric 'Creepy' Schmidt, so please Apple make me a phone that fits in my pocket and I'll pay you what it costs plus your normal 40% markup.

Leave the phablets to the people who choose their phone on the simple "inches of screen / cost per month" equation.

Thankfully Jolla will be releasing a new tablet this year - so I can start on my journey away from the Jony Ive "reality distortion field" - sad to say it, but Jony has lost the plot, iOS 7, 8 and Yosemite are bloody awful and nearly every release in the last few years has been "half arsed".

Please Apple Inc remember you used to make computers.

How big of a mistake? I wonder if you can come up with how many millions they might lose because they won't make the 4 " phone any more.

$0. because people are not going to not buy an iphone because there isnt a 4" version.
when iPhone was 4" and there were no 5" iPhones, people stopped buying iPhones because there are alternatives - Android.
in contrast there are no 4" phones left out there, people will be forced to buy a 4.7" iphone.

It seems like a no-brainer that Apple would have an NFC-only iPhone lineup by the end of 2015 to help bolster widespread Apple Pay adoption. That would mean making a 4inch model to replace the 5S as the low end device, except it would have NFC and either the A7 or A8 chip.

I know you're not saying this, but your quote is almost written like you're saying only a 4" phone qualifies as portable and functional. Anecdotes tend to sound that way. My anecdote, for instance, sounds as if I'm advocating the total opposite of what you're saying. Anecdote: My 5'1", 98 lb. teenage daughter has an iPhone 6. She can grip it securely. She inconveniently whips it out at a moments notice (even tries at dinner:mad:) and very quickly does whatever teenagers do before I can even register my objection. She doesn't baby it. It's caseless (with an obnoxious skin), and between it be jammed in her butt pocket and hovering in the airspace in front of her face it gets a workout. I think you would be hard pressed to convince her the phone lacks portability or functionality. She could have gotten a 5S. She chose the 6 specifically for the extra screen real estate. As for the laptop and TV being the right device for the job... I don't think either will fit in her pocket, purse, or hand;). Anecdotes, I tell ya. Neither of our anecdotes is right or wrong. It's about individual preferences. I am happy you liberally used "I" throughout your quote. It gives clarity to the fact that it describes your use case only and doesn't apply to anyone else.
