When you change your single line plan, to a multiplethe new line automatically becomes the primary in their system (I had the same thing happen) You have to call AT&T to change it back. Once that line bills over $100 for 3 months consecutively you will get your 12 month upgrade date back. So in 2 months you have a full upgrade available.

But again, I am tired of people bitching saying AT&T screw me! No actually they didn't they offer you the 12 month upgrade as an INCENTIVE for spending so much. The contract you signed states you will only get 1 upgrade every contract (24 months) So, again AT&T is actually saving you money because you spend so much. STOP BITCHING YOU SIGNED THE CONTRACT IF YOU DIDN'T LIKE IT THEN YOU SHOULDNT HAVE SIGNED IT! YOU ARE NOT GETTING SCREWED OVER!

Got it. So why didn't the OP leave it as is and allow his wife as the primary to become eligible for a standard upgrade, then do a device swap with her?

op be a man and take that upgrade from your woman. Tell her her 3GS is still the latest phone on the market and not to question your shiny new toy (i'm jk btw, for you feminazis out there) :D

Exactly. Tell her she can go buy herself a new pair of shoes or something. She'll understand then.

I happily am taking my husbands upgrade away from him on tuesday :D

I'm not sure where people are getting this from. She's not eligible until 4-2011 because she got hers 3 months after mine. Obviously I would have taken her upgrade because I am the man in the relationship and wear the pants around here! j/k "I really hope she's not reading this!" lol

Lose your attitude please. I am complaining because I was told I could upgrade in December. It does not make sense that just because my wife purchased an Iphone that my upgrade should be taken away from me for an extra 3 months. If a company says they are going to do something, for some reason I expect them to honor their word. I'm not sure why you are threadcrapping because I want AT&T to keep their word?

A simmilar thing just happened to me. Att was able to change me back to the primary # and make me eligable for upgrade now. I got my 3gs launch day and my 3g on launch day also. So i guess what you need to do is get it to the correct dept.?

What department should I ask for?

I purchased my 3GS on launch day last year and paid $299 at that time.

Did you see what I quoted? Pretty much everyone who bought a 3gs subsidized is eligible in early '11. Your situation is not unique.

As an iPhone owner you are eligible for an "early upgrade" through discounted pricing. You should be able to buy the new iPhone4 at the $399/$499 price point.

It's this simple. You bought a $600~$700 phone at a huge discount less than a year ago and AT&T has yet to re-coup the $ they expected to get from you by you owning the device for 18 months prior to another subsidized upgrade.

I agree. I'm still not sure how all these people think they're getting screwed.

AT&T is a business...They are not a charity.

The original deal was two-year commitment, with 18 month upgrade. How is somebody being screwed because ATT holds them to the commitment? I accepted the fact last year that I was not eligible for a subsidized 3GS upgrade.

I dealt with it.

THE ATTT REP TOLD ME I COULD UPGRADE IN DEC. NOW THEY CHANGED IT LAST MINUTE. This is not normal!

This would not be a unique instance.

I've tried to help, but you're obviously one of those individuals that will not be happy unless you get your way. This is no different from going to Best Buy and buying a TV service plan because a rep told you they will replace a dead pixel.

If you are not an informed consumer (which is what I'm trying to help you out with here) then you are partly to blame.

Can someone help me out here? I purchased my 3GS on launch day last year and paid $299 at that time. In September I bought my wife a 3GS as well for $199. In September I check my eligibility to see when I could upgrade in case I lost or broke my phone, it said I would be eligible for an upgrade on December 20th. Somehow when we got my wife an Iphone, the "customer service professional" at the AT&T store changed my wife over to the primary account holder without my permission even though I have been the primary for over 3 years. Now when I get my eligibility its giving me the February 20th of 2011 date as my upgrade!! I called last month and to put myself back as the primary. As of today it still shows 2-2011 as my upgrade date. Last week, I called AT&T and they pretty much said "screw you, we can't change the Iphones upgrade date at all." Even when I spoke to a supervisor she said the same thing and was very rude and she stated I was "trying to pull a fast on on AT&T!"
What do I need to do to get my eligibility changed back so I can get the the subsidized price on the 24th? Everyone else who bought the 3GS on launch day is getting theirs moved up, why not mine? We are on autopay so we have never missed a payment and my bill is over $180 per month with my employee discount from the hospital where I work. If they won't fix this then I am going android for good "or at least until AT&T looses exclusivity." LOL Thanks guys for your help.

To get your elegibility fixed, you need to have the primary account holder problem fixed. Inform AT&T that they changed this WITHOUT your authorization. They generally will make you sign paperwork to have that kind of change done.

If they refuse to correct the problem, tell them they have produce paperwork to prove that you authorized the change. Threaten to take it to the BBB if they can't produce the paperwork and won't correct the problem. If that still doesn't phase them, actually take it to the BBB.

Trust me, I had to take a personal AT&T problem to the BBB and AT&T caved faster than I could blink. In my experience, the in store support is pretty good, but AT&T phone CS is complete crap. They have the power to change exactly NOTHING.

@Pared.... Perhaps you should learn to count. 18 months from the launch date of 3GS -- which is when he stated he bought the phone -- should be in December of this year!!! He technically is getting screwed because AT&T changed the primary account holder without his authorization and in turn had the eligibility on his account changed. He's simply asking what to do in order to get the error corrected.

Source?

I have a launch-day 3GS, and I'm not eligible until early '11.

My mom bought the 3GS in August at the early upgrade price (even though she was not eligible at all for an upgrade) since she lost her 3G on vacation. She purchased the 3G earlier in the year before the new one came out.

Point of the story? She is going to pre-order on the 15th (she is eligible for a full upgrade). Granted, she is the primary on a family account that has two other lines.

She is the primary line and has a high MRC and her Upgrade Eligible date would have been some time in 2010 anyway. Nothing really special here, she might have been eligible in August or Sept. depending on the MRC this year. So she benefits from the bump.

Any chance she might do an Upgrade Swap with you?

Dave

I was just wondering if you are referring to me? :)

I had similar problems with my upgrade status and the more angry I got with ATT reps the worse the progblem got. I slept it off and called the next day and put on my super-sweet-as-suger voice and spoke with a rep that helped and then had to call back a second time and spoke with another rep that was very helpful and was able to fix it. BE VERY NICE. They are super stressed right now with people calling and freaking out about upgrades so just grin and bare it.

Also, I have a premier account so that might have helped.

Not necessarily, the primary line on a plan over $100/month would be eligible for a full upgrade after only one year, not early '11. Given that the OP pays over $180 per month (which they base on the last 3 months per Geckotek), he would have been eligible by now if he were not taken off as the primary.

But as the primary, she would have been eligible September 2010 (after one year), as your bill is over $100/month, and at&t is moving everyone eligible in 2010 to eligible this month for the iPhone 4. You could've done a device swap with her had you not changed your status.

You are 100% correct. I did not see that anywhere in the thread. If ONE line is over $100 (family plans don't count, it's calculated by individual lines) then that one line would eligible after 12 months.

Email the CEO. After the story broke last week about the threat of cease and desist against the one guy I sent an email to the CEO about my horrible service/coverage experience with them and I got an email from his secretary (Im guessing) a few days later asking for more information on my issues so they can assist. Its worth a shot if you are polite.

People get attitudes because your about the 2,000,000th person to complain about a contract that you signed. Again the December upgrade date was an incentive, not what you signed into. It changed because your primary line changed. When you changed to a family plan, they just pick a line as the primary because basically you just re-did your entire account by switching plans, features, and adding a line. They just picked a line. You have to realize the Dec date was an incentive, not what your contract stated. You should have thought before you signed a contract what you might want to do in the future. AT&T doesn't have the money to offer a break to just anyone. Again, they are NOT a charity. You must live with that. Nobody forced you to sign a contract nor did anyone tell you, you would be eligable in 12months. The contract you signed says an upgrade says every 21 months you get an upgrade.

I should have thought about this before I bought my wife an iPhone. Nowhere does it say that if you purchase an iPhone by adding a line to your account that they are going to remove you as primary user even though you have been the only one on the account for 3 years. I did not say I wanted them to act like a charity. I have no idea what your problem is.
They told me that I would still be able to upgrade with the regular subsidy since I have been on the contract for 12 months, then at the last minute they wanted me to pay an extra $200! I should not lose my upgrade just because I spent another $300 plus an extra $2400 for the life of the contract.
I bet you are getting the early upgrade by the sound of it. If you weren't, I would think you would be a little more understanding. I did nothing wrong, but yet you are accusing me of wanting receive a charity from AT&T. I just want them to live up to their word and get the same treatment everyone else is getting who got the 3GS on launch day. Do me a favor and don't reply until your attitude is gone please.
