Wait for the new Surface Pro 4. It will make both tablets look like toys. I love my Air 2 but I still want a proper file system to maintain documents.

My Surface Pro 3 is closer to a laptop replacement than ever, but still no there yet. From what I hear the Surface Pro 4 WILL be what I have been waiting for.

And what exactly are you waiting for?

Well that depends on what you want to do with it. I find that iPad is better for reading and browsing (easier to hold but no flash is annoying) and gaming while Surface is obviously far better for productivity.

Love my iPad Air 2 just for the record.

I do like that the surface 3 ditched windows rt. Not a huge fan of windows and the interface though. Windows 8 is aweful in my opinion. Hope windows 10 can change my mind on that. Lol lol lol.

For now I love the way my iPad, iPhone and Mac all sync and I don't have to manually do things like I used to have to with my moto x. For example I can update a contact on any of my devises and it seamlessly syncs to all my Apple devices. Key word here is seamlessly. And that's just one of a many benifits you get owning all Apple devices. You may have your own opinion lol.

I mean what features are you waiting for? I can't see what better they can do without stopping it from being a surface.

I usually have to carry a laptop out in the field. A iPad has little use as for the life of me I can not get it to run AutoCad. I use the Surface 3 but it is still lacking. From what I undersand the Surface Pro 4 will have what I need including Cellular. Only time will tell.

Also would like to see the iPad Pro but fear I will not live long enough for it to be introduced.

Yes but so will the price. I want to progress into it so starting out on a SP3 may be the way to go here and then move up that way. I am thinking the SP4 is going to be a hefty penny considering how expensive the SP3 was.

Yes I know in comparison to laptops it isnt that pricey specs wise but for what I use it for, its a tad pricey.

Any rumors on release of the SP4?

I have both, well actually a SP3. The SP3 isn't a great tablet but does everything else pretty well. My iPad Air 2 is a great tablet but doesn't do anything else very well. So there you have it buy both of them. Or neither of them.

It is to be announced within the next 30 days but I do not think we will see them until later this summer when Windows 10 is introduced. They will come in two different sizes with the larger one being 14". Alot to carry in the field but better than the old ThinkPad W series. The SP4 will be more expensive. There is no doubt about that.

I just purchased an sp3 to basically replace my cheapo laptop. I also have an air 2. I find they compliment each other really well. Am loving both atm.

...and that is why some view the SP3 as falling short. The iPad Air 2 should be completely redundant if one owns an SP3.

The surface 3 offers so much more that the iPad Air 2 cannot offer.

I have an iPad Air 2 and I use it when I do presentations because I can control my powerpoint through my iPhone. However, I cannot do full office work with it because I use reference software such as Zotero.

I feel that I mostly use my iPad for consumption. Though we can all agree that gaming on the iPad is horrendous given that Apple lets developers distribute Freemium games for the iPad rather than full fledged games. Given that freemium games are designed to take people's money and offer a less than full gaming experience without paying money, the iPad hardly fills a good gaming roll. There are full games available for iPad, but they are few and far between. Compared to the early days of the original iPad and iPad 2, game developers are all on the freemium bandwagon now.

Surface 3 offers production rather than just consumption

surface 3 pre ordered already :) surface all the way since i have to use them for my business and then run full windows so i can install any software i want and take my personal surfaces to college instead of my ipads since i can get alot of things done by surface rather than ipad.

again dont get me wrong ipad is really for people with minimal requirements in amount of productivity like running full windows or some programs that you cant get it by ipads for example: quickbooks- yes they have app for it on ios store but its no way near for heavy usage like i do on my laptops or surfaces. they are my go to tools for minor twerks or little adjustments but major works has to get done on full size windows.

i have in total about 8 surfaces 5 for business and 3 for personal including the 2 surface 3s i have order for my business and myself. i have 3 ipads but most of them stays home and collect dusts since they dont get heavy usage like my surfaces.

not really my sp3s mine were cheap including discounts which were about 200 bucks off each and another year of warranty.

on normal you can get 10% off them like educational discounts unless you like somekind of deals/contracts going with them. my uncles motel has deals with them since they supply them with surfaces every year for upgrades in his motel chain he has which includes about 17 motels standing plus 3 more opening this year

The Surface Pro is trying to be both a laptop & tablet... And its not fully a laptop due to too many complains of "lapability" issues. Then as a tablet there's not too many apps optimized for it. So it tries to bridge the gap yet it's not quite there.

I think the Surface 3 is an awesome device... But I like my Air 2 and the optimized apps in the App Store makes it a solid device.

I think the answer is directly tied to this question: do you use your iPad, primarily, as a web browser and email machine?

If so, you'll likely be better of with a surface 3 or SP.

If not, and you actually use apps, iPad is the way to go.

Eh. Surface can run full PC steam games. For instance, it can run the full version of civilization 5. iPad games tend to be more basic and casual. Surfaces also have that kickstand for reading.

I see it like this. Surface is the tablet you want if you primarily use a tablet on a desk/table and need productivity. iPad is what you want if you want the best possible experience holding the tablet in your hand and for consumption. It's thinner and lighter than the Surface.

and if you need pen functionality get a surface. also--you may find one note replaces a lot of apps!

Personally I can't get any work done on my iPad... it is great for what it does, but real work and integration with a work environment is not one of those things. It does have a few VPN options, but I found them limited. No VPN over SSL, for instance. For work related things, I would pick the surface over the iPad I suppose... but I just hate that "metro" interface. I can't make heads or tails of that thing...

There's a 3 year old kid on YouTube giving Windows 8 lessons, so if you can't work it out and get stuck, go and have a look.

I purchased a Surface Pro 3 last week to replace my dead Windows laptop. I was hoping it would be a single device I could carry around which would replace my laptop and iPad Air 2.

However it's now been packaged up ready to be returned and I have a 13.3 Macbook Air on its way. The SP3 is an excellent device with a fantastic screen, however for me it was a compromise. As a tablet it is to big and heavy to hold for long periods of time. The kick stand goes some way to help with this but only if you can rest it on your lap. As a laptop the type cover works well but there is a gap between the cover and the surface its resting on which leads to a hallow bouncy feeling when typing, plus the track pad is functional at best. Also having to faff around getting the kick stand in the correct position then the type cover isn't as convenient as flipping a lid open. I can also reset by laptop on the arm of the sofa, but the SP3 was to unstable to do this with.

For general web browsing and word processing it remains cools and quiet. But try stressing it in any way (gaming, photo editing etc) it becomes very hot and fan becomes very noisy. Once the temperature reaches a certain limit the system will throttle itself until it cools down. This leads to a noticeable performance drop.

Hopefully the SP4 will resolve some of these issue.

I am with you on the Windows metro interface. I use it for notifications but that is about it. The iPad could do so much more if it were not tied so tightly to iTunes. Hoping the iPad Pro will have more freedom.

I realize this thread is about the new surface, but I have the surface pro 3, an ipad air and a 15 inch macbook pro as my main home computer. I use the surface pro for work and it is a lot easier than when I was trying to use my ipad for documents. I love being able to mark up documents with the pen. I never found a good stylus for the ipad. I love the ipad too, it just serves a different purpose. The reason I did not get a macbook air was lack of ability to take handwritten notes and no retina screen. For my work needs, which include the need to both use the touch screen for writing and then also typing, the surface pro 3 is the best solution for me at this time. When traveling for pleasure, I use the ipad. I like having all three devices as they serve different purposes for me.

There really shouldn't be a comparison, as they are two different devices.

The iPad is a tablet. For all of it's strengths and weaknesses, that's what it is. Not a powerful as a laptop, more useful than a phone.

The surface line is somewhere between a laptop and a tablet. So it has compromises for both form factors.

I honestly can't see the point of debating between the two because they are meant for different purposes. For consuming media, light office work and ultra portability, you'd be fine with an iPad. But if you need to run full windows and apps, or require a physical keyboard, or need a USB port, then the surface is excellent.

I couldn't do my job without my laptop, but I've found when I travel outside of work, I never bring my laptop. The iPad does everything I need in that scenario.

You can't see the point of debating between the two because you have a tightly defined view as to the use cases of each where there is little if any overlap. But people's uses of tablets and laptops run across the spectrum. The value of this discussion is to help people discover where on the spectrum they fall.
