Ok so my iPad Pro which I brought in August of last year (15 months ago) has started playing up :( the screen goes all weird and suddenly goes black, it did that yesterday night about 5 times. I took it off charge this morning and all has been well most of the day, now it’s just happened again. I’m guessing there is an issue, but because it’s out of warranty (over the 12 months) and I don’t have Apple Care, Apple will want to charge me, probably a ridiculous amount as well.

Anyway I’ll get to the point, I’m thinking about using this opportunity to switch to a Surface device, before this happened I was looking at getting a new MacBook Air BUT with keyboard reliability issues, I’m now thinking about the Surface Laptop 2 or the Surface Pro 6!

Does anyone here have experience with the Pro 6 OR the Surface Laptop 2? If so what do you think? Are they reliable?

I only have experience with the Pro 2017 (5) and Surface Book 2 15”, but I am a big fan. If your looking for a laptop AND a replacement for your iPad. I would say the Pro 6 or SB 2 13” are going to be the closest in tablet size and have the removable screen / tablet mode

The usual stats we see posted suggest that Apple tend to be more reliable in the first year, slightly ahead in second and no difference in the 3rd. But this data precedes latest Mac generation and includes most price bands.

In the premium builds there is no real data on reliability for one brand over another. You will mostly see some anecdotal evidence or myths of longevity

Even with Apple many if not more so now buy AC because of potential issues and it simply remains if reliability was that good these add on warranties etc would not exist

Although the IPP is probably the smartest dumb thing out there and really comparing a Mobile OS device to a full OS device is daft I would say the SP6 is the preferable option as its the closest footprint to the IPP but obviously so much more

Thank you both :) with Black Friday coming up soon, Microsoft have dropped the price of the Surface Pro by £200, however the best deal seems to be on Amazon, as this article says the core i5, with 256GB storage can be brought for £899 rather than the full price of £1,299.99 which means it's £400 off. I have to admit that is a very tempting offer. The only problem is it's the silver version and comes with the silver type cover, you can't select the one you wan't. Still that seems like a great deal.

That does seem like a very good deal. That’s definitely on the Pro 6 and not the 5? Does it also include the pen?

You can always change the type cover later if the original one gets dirty, worn or you’re tired of the color.

If you want to change the color of the unit itself, there are some options for decals such as those from Dbdand, Decal Girl, Skinnit, etc. There are also so wood options such as those from Toast.

It's a good deal, SP6 I'm going with Black with Cobalt Blue Type Cover  for no other reason than I can :p

No it doesn’t come with the Pen, just the Surface Pro 6 and the type cover. Yes it’s definitely the SP6, I had to look twice myself before believing it.

I grabbed the SP6 i5-128GB Costco $799 deal which includes the keyboard and pen. It should be here by Wednesday. I am not ditching my iPad Pro as it is mainly used in bed to surf, watch TV, etc.

Can you not do the same with the Surface Pro? I believe there is a Netflix App, not sure about a YouTube app tho.

Anyone know of the Surface Pro can do the same picture in picture as the iPad Pro? I often like to websurf while having a video playing on the side.

I have the Surface Laptop 2 and have a thread going on about it.. It's a fantastic machine if you want a traditional style laptop.. If you want a convertible then the Surface Book 2 or Surface Pro 6 might be worth looking at.

I use PS Vue app for TV. Most of the options are browser based from what I understand. My brother travels with both his Surface and iPP because of that and all the movies and music he has on the iPad.

There is a Hulu app and a Netflix app, but not an official YouTube app.

There are a couple of decent 3rd party ones for YouTube. Awesome Tube is a good free one, Perfect Tube is also free but cost $1 to remove ads. WinTube is another ad sponsored one that costs $1 to remove ads.

HBO Now only works on Xbox.

Edit: Don't know how I forgot it, but the app I use is TubeCast Pro, the price is $3 and
supports 4K, QHD, HD, and SD. Videos can also be downloaded for offline viewing. The
Pro" version has the ability to cast your videos to a variety of sources such as Smart TV's Xbox 360 or Xbox one and will work with Apple TV and Chromecast.

I want to replace my iPad Pro at some point, with something that can do more, I have been an Apple fan since 2011, however just lately I’m finding myself frustrated and disappointed with the Apple ecosystem. Apple want me to buy a Mac and an iPad, when Microsoft have 1 device that can do both, something I’m sure Apple could do if they wanted too.

The new iPad Pros are very powerful but they are held back by using a mobile OS (ie IOS) also the price increase is ridiculous for a device that isn’t even a laptop.

Sorry to hear that. Apple refused to swap out my kaboshed 2017 12.9 iPP that was having touch screen issues and I had AC+. So I personally think you’re making a good call by thinking about a Surface.

You may have already seen the existing Surface Laptop 2 thread here:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/surface-laptop-2.2150708/#post-26816063

And mom now wants the 2018 iPad, so I am hanging onto the 10.5 iPP. Current plan is to get used to Windows 10 on the Acer next semester and keep an eye on Surface products (SB, SP or SS2) to replace my iMac.

I wish you all the best with this choice @Dave245 and am very curious to hear about you going Surface.

Some initial impressions while it downloads Windows updates:

Build quality and precision is absolutely fantastic. I understand that these can have some quality assurance issues but that is not the case on my unit. No odd gaps, no backlight bleed, it's stellar.

This display is hella glossy. If it weren't so good I'd consider it annoying but its a compromise. The clarity is far and away better than the XPS was - as is the evenness of the backlight. I have two vaguely darker bottom corners but this is only visible on high brightness on a white background. The devilish blue startup page that Windows uses is my normal test for evenness and there's no discernable flaw when viewing that thing so as far as I'm concerned this is as close to perfect as a normal LCD gets. I would not hesitate to say this (rather likely true of the 15") is the best display you're going to get in a Windows laptop. Bezels are fat on the 13 though.

Having a fanless device is absolutely wonderful. The back of the display is warm but, since its not on my lap, I do not care. I have yet to try out the GPU. I'm not much of a gamer but I do dabble now and then. So long as it can play Forza and Counter Strike well I'm not concerned about the performance otherwise.

The keyboard is fantastic. It's very soft and springy. My fingers just sort of bounce off of it in the way they do on my mechanical keyboard at work. Effortless. They also make a nice noise if that's your jam. It's also clear not all Windows Precision trackpads are made equal. Yet again another area this computer dominates all but the MacBook competition.

I was worried the 13.5" would be too small after owning both a MacBook Pro 15" and the XPS 15" however now that I have it home sitting on my dinner table it's a very good size. The screen height is roughly the same as the XPS' but with an inch cut off either side. This will mean it's not very practical to put 2 windows side by side but does mean I don't lose anything but blank space on most websites (like this one!).

The short answer is maybe? The Microsoft Windows & TV app allows for this. Does it work with with the iPad Pro with any app other than the videos app?

The long answer is that there is more support for this coming in the next release of Windows 10 and also that perhaps that it isn't as important with Windows 10 as it is with the iPad Pro. With the iPad pro, you are limited to Split Screen "multitasking" or Picture in Picture. With the Surface Pro 6, you can open as many apps/programs simultaneously as resources will permit and resize them as you please.

The glossy display is definitely a tradeoff compared to the MacBook Pro and some other models. It is durable Gorilla Glass, but I think they feel antiglare coatings don't hold up well to extended pen/touch. For a true 2-1 touch/pen device, if used as designed, it will get a lot of use from both. But otherwise it is very bright, very clear, good contrast and vibrant color.

I just did the same thing today, but I picked it up at the store. I'm really liking it so far. I use Win10 at work so it's not a big adjustment .

It’s great that I would be able to open as many apps and programs, resizing them as I want. Apple don’t allow this on the iPad Pro or Mac, it’s a maximum of 2 at a time. I have found myself getting annoyed with Apple’s antics lately, it’s like they are trying to limit what people can do.

My only fear with getting a Surface is if Windows 10 is buggy, crashes and or is laggy. With the Mac I don’t have that worry. I don’t mind the learning curve that I’m going to have with a Surface device/Windows 10, I’m sure there are some websites that give out helpful hints and tips to switching, there may even be books I could buy on Amazon, yes that’s how much I actually want to try a Surface device :D

I don’t know if it’s just me or if Apple really are dropping the ball on things, things just don’t seem as good as they use to in the Apple ecosystem anymore, or maybe the reality distortion field is starting to wear off?

If you had Apple Care+ surely they have to fix it? after all that's why you paid for Apple Care! so you're iPad Pro 2017 also has an issue? my 12.9" turns itself off, goes to the white screen with Apple logo and then back on, it did it again last night, the night before it did it as well and also Saturday night, a number of different times. I have a feeling there is a hardware issue.

I'm looking at the Surface for a number of reasons, i really think Microsoft are on to something, i have tried the Surface a number of different times in Curry's PC world, every time it seems to work really well (even tho i have no idea what i'm doing on Windows haha). The first tine i played around with the Surface Pro in store i was impressed with the build quality, the kickstand was sturdy, the screen looked great and the keyboard was actually brilliant to type on. This is from a Mac user who use to trash the Surface, mainly because i couldn't understand why anyone would want one, but i was wrong and now i get it.....boy oh boy do i understand.

It also seems like the Surface range is doing well, it's a billion dollar business for Microsoft, meanwhile Apple are ignoring the 2 in 1 and want people to buy a Mac and an iPad, even now with the iPad Pro prices having gone up by around £200, it's ridiculous and i think i have finally hit that wall with Apple.

Yeah, I was hoping after paying almost $1500 for that piece of scrap that Apple would do right by me. But nope. The second time in 7 years, they’ve done that. And yet, I feel like something of a heel picking up this 10.5 on sale two weeks ago. But with the Surface Pen jiggle issue, I suppose it is best for me to wait on getting a Surface until late 2019-2020 (for my art therapy desires). My iMac is running fine -and I suspect my Acer laptop is too (I have to start using that again)-, so I do not have a need in replacing my main system yet. But it is on my mind.

Your iPad Pro issues, I am no expert, but that reboot issue doesn’t sound good. Like yourself, I am reconsidering Windows for the same reasons you are, and am ultimately thinking of going that route with whatever replaces my iMac. I’ve been getting increasingly frustrated by Apple, and iTunes in particular lately (which has become such a hassle with more annoying bugs and changes with each new version). You hit the nail on the head in your feelings and I am thinking, well no OEM is perfect and if I am throwing that much money around for tech, I may as well try something else. I am thinking different so to speak and cannot fathom buying another Apple system at those price points with QC being such trash. And if Apple can release newer, pricier systems with older tech inside and charge that much for them, not sure why I blew off the Surface Studio 2 as I did as it offers everything I want in a system except for mobility.

I really like what MS is doing with their hardware. Other Mac users experiences with various Surface Products and Microsoft’s customer service sounds encouraging about going Windows, so asI take baby steps to move away from being a 22 year Apple veteran, I have found this thread and sub forum super helpful.

I am happy to hear about people’s experiences as I slowly move closer to something beyond Apple. Looking forward to reading about your Surface adventures.

On Windows 10 the Picture in Picture works with Microsoft Apps such as Movies&TV, supposedly their Skype app, Groove Music, etc. It also works with some non-microsoft apps such as Netflix, but not Hulu yet. So that is still a bit hit or miss.

iTunes you can make it work by going into settings and clicking the option to always have mini-player on top and then selecting mini-player from view. Spotify does not yet work in Picture in Picture, which is surprising since Microsoft has been pushing people toward Spotify since shutting down its Groove Music service. I expect it will come soon to Spotify, which is cool by me. I stopped using iTunes many years ago and switched to Spotify. I have never used Groove.

Groove will still play music you have stored on OneDrive, so I am sure that there is a workaround to download iTunes and Spotify music to OneDrive and import it into Groove, but I can't be bothered to do that just for PiP :)

My experience with Windows 10 over the past 14 months is that it has been as stable and snappy as OSX. It has its own unique idiosyncrasies, much like OSX, but overall they both work well. I haven't found it slowing down or getting laggy over time. Nor have I found it to be buggy. There are some useful websites out there for both the Surface and Windows 10 in general and I picked up a Copy of Windows 10 Step by Step as a reference since I hadn't used Windows since XP. I later picked up a copy of OneNote Step by Step because I really didn't know how to use it. There are a lot of other books out there, some may be better, but these were available locally :)

I had an older iPad that started exhibiting that behavior. Eventually, all it would do was go to the white screen with the Apple logo and then shut off reboot, go to the screen with the Apple logo, shut off, reboot, etc.

They don't have a legal obligation to swap the device if they can make it right without a swap, but they do need to make it right if it is covered under AppleCare+ or swap it if they cannot. Are they trying to say it works fine when it does not?

I’ve been getting increasingly frustrated by Apple, and iTunes in particular lately (which has become such a hassle with more annoying bugs and changes with each new version).

I abandoned iTunes years before ever thinking about buying a PC. I would be hard pressed to think of anything that I miss about it. :)

Yeah, they said no issues because I couldn’t replicate the non touch problems on the spot.

I’ve already converted a lot of my movies to formats Windows can use but need to get them onto compatible drive, will do the same for my noise (i.e., “music”).

And great advice (as usual) on learning your way around Windows and recreating picture within a picture.

I contacted apple support yesterday, they ran me through the restore process only for the issue to happen again last night, i just contacted them again and this time they have told me to restore and set up as new. If that doesn’t work I will have to contact them again, I didn’t realise that software issues can cause display issues

The money they quote for out of service repair is just ridiculous, £566.44 if it’s a hardware issue becaus it’s out of warranty and I don’t have Apple Care. Fingers crossed it’s a software issue and is now fixed, because I’m not paying that price for a repair  that’s nearly the price of an actual new iPad Pro.

On another note their customer service is good, but I can’t help feel Apple are not what they use to be. If turns out to be a hardware issue, I will seriously consider getting the Black Friday Surface Pro offer!

The restore to factory new is Apple’s de facto fix it these days. I wish you luck with it and can’t wait to hear about the Black Friday Surface deal you snagged.
