Well that's the clear tactic...

I don't care for the sealed nature of Surface, equally I feel like I'm getting my money's worth, not so much Apple it's not a privilege to own their hardware, arguably a deficit in 2018...

Q-6

I get what you are saying with the Surface and the nature of that idea I found a lot more troubling when their old policy was to send a “serviceable unit” which was not always in the same condition as the one you sent them, if you were careful with your gear.

The current policy, which is to usually exchange with new (built specifically for exchange) or truly refurbished as Apple does with their phones is far more friendly to the user and makes the form factor much more appealing than in the past.

Instead of sending it in and waiting for parts as you do with Apple, you can do an advanced exchange.

That’s still not to say it is a substitute for easily repairable onsite service as you would get with Lenovo, Dell, etc. but it is at least a bit more equitable than some of the tales I have heard of people waiting weeks for a top case from Apple.

That and Apples high deductibles on top of the Apple + is ridiculous. It is kind of like paying $600 for an auto club membership and then having to pay an additional $99 to $200 per call if you get a flat or need a tow.

In a machine that costs that much I don’t know what Apple was thinking. On a different note, with the Surface Pro and Surface Book 2, can they do what the iPad Pro does, for example can they split screen? (Have two apps open at once like safari and mail) also can they do picture in picture? Having a video play in the small window on the desktop while doing something else)

these are features that I appreciate on both the iPad and Mac, yet i don’t believe i’ve askef if Windows can do it?
I had to check the date for this one LOL

I think the clue is in the name "Windows" :D

If your happy with IPP then you will be amazed at what Android can do with multiple windows let alone W10 :)

Enough said...
Times are indeed different...

Played with a new Air tonight and -ugh- that keyboard (3 years on it's still painful for me). I am beginning think if I do not buy a 2017 iMac soon, not sure what I will buy to replace this iMac when it goes. Hoping it will last another year.

I may be stuck on using Apple (for all their mounting faults), but I admire the Surface line and might eventually go Windows (they're pulling the same malarkey as Apple), but MS are innovating in the hardware department and there's a lot to be said for that.

Perhaps when I am ready to replace this iMac I will see what is new with the Surface line. And my redonkulous indecision continues.:rolleyes::confused:

Will continue to read this thread and this sub forum. Lots of great information and I enjoy the open mindedness here.

I haven’t really used my iPP in quite awhile other than for surfing and such, so I forget, but is it limited to only a split screen with only 2 apps?
Yes, only two apps.

Ahh.. I knew that trying to use it as a "computer" drove me nuts and I always felt like I was trying to jump through too many hoops to get anything done with it. I am sure that was probably one of the factors, but had forgotten about it.

I really do not like the butterfly keyboards at all. I really wish they would start replacing them, not adding them to more models. The XPS also has a shallow travel keyboard, but they seem to have more resistance, don't bottom out so easily and aren't as clacky.

What year is your iMac? Hopefully you will get another year out of it.

Indeed. I know my limitations with the iPad Pro, so I use it for art, pdf mark up, surfing and reading comics & watching movies. Anything else I leave for my iMac. Digital drawing has become very helpful in my healing and dealing with real life so that is my primary reason for replacing my 2017 12.9.

Not a fan of the butterfly/low travel keyboards. I wish they’d change them too after 3 generations, it kind of makes me wonder why Apple haven’t reverted to the 2015 and earlier scissor keys again. Those were so great.

I’ve had this 2013 Non-Retina 27” iMac for 3 years now.

And I am still thinking about the Surface Studio 2. :p

I am still convinced that Apples goal is to go thinner yet and eventually change to Taptic keyboards with no actual travel at all. I think the low travel is a pre-cursor and a "lets get folks used to the feel" kind of thing.

I can barely draw a circle or a square, so I use my iPP mainly for coloring, web browsing, checking news and emails before bed and when I wake up. I don't find it very useful for much else. PDF markup I of course can do on the Surface, but the coloring apps for the iPP are better.

Watching movies on a computer/tablet I pretty much only do on airplanes. I think if I were to try it in bed I would fall asleep until I dropped the tablet and it smacked me in the face or dropped onto my chest and scared me half to death.

3 years or more should be fine for the iMac unless its preformance related rather than hardware longevity related.

Surface Studio 2 looks really nice. So does that HP Envy curved screen 34", but reviews seem to indicate that its display quality isn't nearly as good as the Surface Studio.

I've had several surface pros. Each was returned or sold and I wet back to my MacBook Pro. The surfaces are way too finicky. They get problems like sleep of death, overheating, poor support, corrupted updates, shorting at the power connector, incredibly bad wifi, etc. They are definitely COOLER, but not reliable enough to be anything more than a toy. Using them as a tablet is impossible too. Too heavy.

I can't share that sentiment, but we (wife & I) have experienced some of these issues. Hers has gotten very hot a few times, and mine needs rebooting about twice per week. Overall, we both love being back in Windows after leaving iPads and iMac following our Surface Pro (5) purchases. The freedom of the OS is very enthralling and refreshing. But just yesterday she caught me looking at new laptops online, which started the conversation. We both agree that our devices are both a bit 'glitchy'. Not entirely surprising, after several years spent with Apple hardware.

I think I'm in the market for something a little more substantial, and not quite as mobile. But man, the ocean of available laptops is overwhelming and even after hours of looking for a potential replacement, I still don't even know where to start. It gives me a new sympathy for others here looking for solutions.

Just wandering into Best Buy and seeing all the PC lap and desktops blows my mind (as it did last night). I can definitely sympathize. It is why I have decided I will probably go Surface whenever I get the gumption to go Windows.

I use to like buying HiFi in the 70's it was easy just most knobs, dials, switch's VU for you $ :D and big speakers

Now less is more

Just wait for the newer and thinner replacement for the MacBook Air in 2020. The MacBook Methane :)

Camera gear was like that too. Big bodies with big dials. Now everything is buried several layers deep in menus :)

I tweeted MS Surface to please list all art software that isn’t Affinity, Corel or Adobe that works with the Surface Pen and Surface line up. I will post their response if they do.

I keep looking for one computer to do everything. Maybe when I am ready to replace the iMac that machine will exist. Unless MS release more black Surface products next year. :D

I have no artistic abilities, but there are a few on this list. Some Windows only, others cross platform..

Also Autodesk Sketchbook and Leonardo come to mind.

Can I like this post more than once?

You were far more helpful than Microsoft who just pointed me to their App Store which had nothing that I did not already know about. Leonardo may be close to Procreate. Ditto for ArtRage. The graphite style drawing app looks great too.

Thank you as always. Now I can pay closer attention to Lisa’s artist reviews of the Surface Pro, Book and Studio - if she continues those.

:)

Leonardo is still in Beta, but unfortunately, *not* Cross-platform. Otherwise, you could get on board at the beta stage with your iMac and try to provide some input into shaping what it will eventually become. One thing I did not notice was if it natively supports the Surface Dial or plans to in the future.

I was playing around with that a bit in the store last time I was there. Again, I am not the artistic type, unfortunately, but that Surface Dial is a pretty neat device. People who think the Touch Bar has some utility haven't really spent any time with a touch screen, pen and dial type setup I think. Those kinds of devices really make the touch bar look like a cheap novelty.

I also love the Surface Arc mouse for travel. It has a good hand feel when arced and the ability to smash it flat and put it into a bag is awesome! People who haven't seen one before, look at you funny if you mash it with your fist though hahaha.

Edit: Another Cross-platform program that looks interesting.

I dunno brothers (and sisters!), I've really, really been trying to work off this machine almost full-time the past few weeks, but the internal SSD is just way too slow. It's actually painful. Plus, I need remote desktop capability, which this sadly does not properly provide.:(

Honestly, if one is thinking of buying an SB2 it might be best to save a few more $$ and go for a minimum of 512gb of SSD. It really is too slow to work with. I love almost everything about the SB2 save for this 256gb SSD.

If I could eBay this to have then aimed for a 512gb SSD I would, but I'm afraid the potential customer would ask for their money back due to the slow speed of even everyday tasks (even keyboard lag at times :().

I went with the 1TB SSD in mine, which is a Samsun and feels fast enough. Not the kind of numbers that the MBP puts up, but they use a little smoke and mirrors with the directory cloning. But it seems more in line with the standard speeds for a 1TB.

What kind of Crystal Disk numbers are you getting with the smaller drive?

Lets not go through all those posts again :)

Last time we suggested Bodie try the Samsung T5 external drive that was twice as fast :D

Not sure what issues Bodie is also having with remote desktop but there are plenty of guides to setting this up

KB lag sorry can't swallow this one under normal circumstances

Yeah, just trying to help. There was a poster in this thread that claims to have seen as much as a 40% boost in speeds by using a Samsung NVE Express driver, rather than the default.

Not sure what to make of the KB lag, maybe there are issues that go beyond the SSD that are slowing the system in general?

No problem mate thought you had forgotten it was same poster :)

I expect lag with KB may be in reference to remote desktop as I see this when IT log in to my work laptop, but it's to be expected especially if you have 2 laptops side by side it's more apparent
