To a point yes, but I think it's apple who is trying to encroach on the full OS territory with the iPad Pro. Heck, the iPad itself was made to compete against the netbooks. While both are running different types of operating systems (mobile vs. full desktop OS), they are looking to attack nearly the same problems.

Agreed but they have little option if they do not develop OSX to compete in the same area, quite few thought the IPAD Pro should of been a full OS/OSX

Ah, so even though it has as many batteries as an iPad and a MacBook combined it will be lighter in weight. So Apple is going to reinvent the battery, nice.

And the headphone port will only be on the Screenpad side of the Frankenbook so there will be an ugly wire sticking out of the notebook's screen instead of nice and low down on the side of the Keypad, and Apple loves ugly design. And then you have the issue of where the 10,000 AAC song files go. Do they live in the small hard drive of the Screenpad or on the massive drive on the Keypad? Since one side is running iOS and the other side is running OSX, do those files need to live in both places? Or when you attach the screen back to the keyboard is there a 10 second lag as the two drives connect? And what if I've changed a file on the Screenpad? When I attach it to the Keypad do the two drives in the two operating systems sync? And with all those drives spinning what does that do to battery life?

Apple is not making this product. You can stop talking about it now.

Neither the iPad or MacBook are heavy separate so that point is beyond moot. Woah, a cable is 1 inch higher otherwise! Oh noes! Your right Apple would never have a slight compromise that 99.9% of people wouldn't care about with the exception of idiots on this website *cough* iPhone 6 antenna bands *cough*. We have this thing called iCloud which keeps files update across the Apple ecosystem instantly. We live in 2015 not 2000. Thunderbolt 1 would allow instant connection between multi able devices let alone 2 or 3. All your points are garbage and non existent and scream of Apple fanboy idioticy. Apple would also never make a big phone cause 4 inches are perfect, and yet we have 5.5 inch one.

Are you kidding me? It's running Windoze 10 which if full of glitches, BSOD crashes and Spyware. rMB simply provides unparalleled experience compared to that Surface POS.
^this. No hardware will ever get me back to Windows unless the reinvent it for stability, security and making itself redundant every 18 months. I don't care if it can do 0 to 60 in .00001 seconds ...no way no how

iPad Pro's UI experience would be atrocious with OS X. Also, you can never get a frustration free experience with a desktop app on a touch optimized device. It's really illogical to have a PURE desktop OS in a tablet device.

This is purely down to personal preference and usage.

I find the whole Ipad/Tab pointless and for my needs why would I want to keep swapping between 2 devices, I prefer the slight compromise of rMB over the extra portability of Ipad/Tabs.

Ipads have no unique appeal of apps that I want or use over what's available on a full OS or already covered by my smartphone, for the few apps I use on top of communication.

How anyone tries to use normal business tools on an Ipad/Tab is beyond me

An Ipad or Tab is actually such a poor substitute and compromise on functionality that I require despite owning 3 of them and a myriad of other gadgets, they are firmly in my book of been there tried that.

If I had a surface book and used it in detached mode only a few times a week it still would be 100% more useful/practical to me than any Ipad/Tab despite there being some degradation or minor frustration in use, without a mouse/trackpad, in detached mode.

MS offer the better alternative to owning 2 separate devices (laptop and Ipad) for my needs and personal scenarios.

Sad to say Apple won't downgrade the user experience of iOS and OS X by combining them to a jack of all trades hybrid device like Surface. Given the negative comments from M$ hybrid OS, Apple would never risk tarnishing their reputation by copying and releasing an improved version of hybrid device that is better than Surface since they know "purist" Apple fans would criticize them from having a compromised user experience with a hybrid iOS and OS X OS. IMO I think Apple should focus on improving continuity feature than M$ approach of ONE OS, any type of devices given that the Surface will never be a master of both Tablet and Desktop experience.

Whilst I agree currently MS OS may not be optimal for KB less/touch mode I see it as an additional feature to the functionality. I and others have a choice to use with or without a physical KB when it suits and for those who use Pen/Pencils it's a bigger advantage/option

Many of the drawbacks with certain software/apps is there regardless of it being on MS Surface or an Ipad/Tab

I do not see MS OS as a jack of all trades simply as it's not directly competing with the mainly entertainment platform that Ipad/Tabs apps offer.

However I think its far easier for MS to emulate an Ipad/Tab than the reverse. It's this overlap of use that IMO confuses people and draws strange comparisons between 2 different platforms

As you note why Apple probably will not develop touch interface for OSX it maybe why they are trying with the Ipad Pro to gain further crossover in to enterprise world of full OS's

I think there is no clear way forward currently and the only good news for consumers is there have a choice and IMO MS are expanding that. It remains to be seen how long some of these choices last.

ITT: lots of people arguing why OS X on iPad wouldn't work. Then someday if apple puts it on there, completely changing their opinions that they spent pages and pages writing about

No worries. Tim Cook was just quoted this week emphatically stating that Apple will not do this so it's never going to happen.

No way. Touch screens and convertible mode have no place in OS X. And Apple knows that. Many of us wouldn't have bought the MacBook if it had those things.

Your wrong, and almost everyone would buy if Apple offered.

I run Windows 10 exclusively on my RMB and it is fantastic, in fact from what I read about OSX issues with the machine it looks like Windows 10 may be superior. It's incredibly stable, very fast, the MacBook is the best Windows machine I've ever owned and I've owned dozens.

Try not falling for old wives tales. You know, like "a watched pot never boils". Spoiler; it does.

I can confirm... Though I own a MBA and not a MB, Windows 10 boots faster, runs faster, etc. I pretty much just use Mac OS on my MBA because I need the specific programs on it (and then I use my full PC with Windows 10 for gaming), but I was pretty amazed to find that my MBA worked better with W10 than Mac. I expected sluggishness, etc. In fact, the reason I built a gaming PC was because I tried W10 on my MBA and I was so impressed.

I've currently been looking for alternatives on Windows for the programs I use and there is only one that is holding me back. Otherwise, I'd sell the iPad and MBA and get a Surface Pro 4.

Seriously amazed by W10. I switched from Windows 10 years ago to Mac and have talked crap about MS ever since. Can't really do that anymore!

Seriously starting to be disillusioned with OS X and Apple`s hardware it`s not doing what I want and now Thx to 10.11 it`s not doing what I expect...

I'm currently selling my 2015 rMBP and iPad Air 2 for a Surface Pro 4 i5 that's preordered. The MacBook is a little to inconvenient for couch surfing and I'm just plain sick of the iPad and it's limitations. I have no interest ever of letting go of my iPhone nor Apple desktops though.

I am seriously into the Surface Pro 4. And, exactly like you, it is because I can converge my two devices (MBA and iPad Air 2) into one. I haven't used an Apple desktop since I got my iMac in 2007, though I used it until about 2012. I just don't see the point in Apple desktops. They are too weak to play the games I play. Nowadays I just hook up my MBA to a big monitor on my desk and I've been pretty happy with that.

As for iPhones... I may end up liking them better than the next phone I get (almost certainly an Android), but as of right now... I want to test out the other camp. I bought a $1000 6 Plus last year and it has all kinds of UI lag. I got that when I went to iOS 8 on my 4s right before I got the 6 Plus, because it was, what, three years old? But for a one year old device? Not acceptable.

Now, Android may have the same faults. I don't know, I've never had one. But this issue has pushed me into trying out the competition, which I will do in 11 months when I finish paying off my (laggy) iPhone. Like I said, I may be wrong to switch, I don't know, but I'll find out firsthand.

Am waiting to see what Apple offers for 2016, equally if it`s just the same mix of "thinner & lighter" then Microsoft`s Surface Pro 4 will be the weapon of choice, as it offers far greater utility.

Don't use IOS devices as they don't work for me, I did try the iPad, however it just seemed to be a constant workaround. Android works, however I dislike Google`s "fremium" model, I would rather purchase applications outright, than be bombarded with Ad`s or never ending "in App" purchases. I have one small Windows 8.1 tablet, it`s never had an issue, which is far more than I can say about 10.11.0 So for the first time in a long time Microsoft is looking good on both hardware & software...

Same here - my 2012 rMBP is getting long in the tooth and I'm looking for something to replace it with. I was thinking of an iMac as I'm more interested in a desktop but I'm disappointed in what Apple rolled out. I really do love my 2012 rMBP but I hope the next iterations of apple's laptops are not just thinner.

The SurfaceBook is on my short list at this point but I'm still hoping to see something nice out of Apple as I prefer OS X.

If I can resit buying a MS SP or SB I may too wait and see what Apple do to the rMB, but it better be early 2016

My particular problem is I have never seen a Surface Pro 3 in the flesh. I gladly buy a Surface book on spec as I know what a normal clamshell design is like but I would really like to fiddle with that kickstand and KB to see if it will be annoying to deploy.

Not that I do much typing whilst flying but I assume the MS SP3 or 4 won't sit on an average plane tray with the kickstand and KB folded out

I ditched all ideas of buying a rMB and now am getting a Surface Book. Yes, the price is expensive ($2300 AUD) but I can use the student discount offer (10%) plus I can claim GST (another 10%) plus claim cashback deal (2%). Brings it down to a very good price.

Since the SB is directed against people getting MBPs, what was the allure of the MacBook for you?

I think for those who need to squeeze the most out of portability the MB is a better machine.

The SurfaceBook is on my shortlist of possible replacements towards my MBP so I am a fan of the laptop, but I'm not sure if the MB is its main competitor.

Apple isn't so stupid to put a desktop OS in a tablet device unlike M$
They also aren't stupid enough to make a smaller iPad. 10 inches is ideal! Any smaller and the experience is unusable. Then...the iPad mini came. Oh and a larger iPhone? Apple was emphatic about that! They even made a commercial talking about 4inches being the perfect size! Then the next full upgrade later, 4inches is gone

Always funny when people try to predict what Apple would do and think just because Tim said something that they won't just change their mind later. It's pretty myopic to think such short term. If the heads at Apple find an implementation they like, no doubt they will react to what the market wants if the marker wants them.

The Surface Pro has an awkward form factor and is insanely expensive when you actually get what the Microsoft guy demoed live. Double the price of a rMB.

Those changes don't drastically change the user experience unlike changing the OS. You still do the same steps to do a task albeit on a larger or smaller scale. Changing it to OS X would surely be a disaster because that OS DOES NOT belong nor is going to be more user friendly on a tablet device IMO. Working on desktop apps would be an atrocious experience like Surface (e.g. awkward, unintuitive placement of controls, scaling issues again since it would need bigger buttons to accomodate touch, laking multi-touch support and even touch awareness as experience by surface users running desktop apps. It'll be a disaster to Apple's ease of use reputation.

Just take a look at the Windows 8 debacle. That is definitely NOT the way to go. And when MS finally put back the Start Menu, they did not do it right.
