Dropped Calls

I'm confused about the title of this thread. Didn't Steve Jobs, in his press conference regarding the antennae attenuation, say that the 3GS had fewer dropped calls by a slight margin?

I'd like to see the margin of error on this survey.

Unfortunately. . .

There's no way to scientifically measure the number of calls that are being ended prematurely because someone's cheek hits the "End" button while talking on the phone. AT&T definitely wouldn't record that as a dropped call, though, because it's not as far as they're concerned. They have no way of knowing if a person's cheek or finger hit "End." Still no word from Apple on when a fix for the proximity sensor will come.

Here's a tip, buy this domain macinvestor.com and put this kind of "news" there. Then all the fanatics on both sides of the fence can have at it over there. Maybe then, this site can go back to giving us rumors of what's coming and what's going. Starting to think you're getting funding from Apple or something. And stop removing my posts. I don't post anything any more offensive then the next guy.

Normally I'd say that "I totally agree", but those posts are being deleted. (To prevent that I've been told to address the topic rather than provide my opinion. Hmm??) In that case, where exactly do MR peeps find articles like this to post?

I've yet to even be able to force my phone to drop a connection, even in areas with poor service where it would typically drop out with my 3GS.

Even after you slam it on concrete 3 times?

Somebody has to be in that reported 5.2% minority. Sorry about your bad luck.

My i4 drops less calls than my 3GS did.

I dropped more calls in one day with an iPhone 4, than I have in 3 years of using 2g, 3g, and 3gs. I guess I'm in the minority. My two coworkers have both dropped a lot of their calls. I suppose they are in the minority as well.

Lol what a joke this antenna thing turned out to be. The fact of the matter is, Apple isn't perfect and I think they will learn from their mistake.

Man, what a great looking phone though. Even though I'm really enjoying my new Droid X, it just doesn't have the look or feel that the iPhone 4 has. The tight integration with my MBP is gone and I have to charge my battery every night now. However, it's yet to drop a single call, and in the end, this is what matters most to me. I believe that any system is as strong as it's weakest link, and from my experience with the iPhone 4, it's weakest link is its antenna design that resulted in dropping calls for me.

Apple is not run by a bunch of dummies, they will certainly learn from their mistake. In the end, it benefits us all.

I have had 1 or two dropped calls a week with GS. With iPhone 4 I get that a day. Plus, somehow when I have it against my face, the mute button gets engaged like once a day too. Finally, the feel in hand, the 3gs felt much better.

Reality or not, its a widely held perspection. Mud sticks.

Mud sells. Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohen, and Apple. They'll will all make money off of their reported "problem".

Guy in the hallway who normally wouldn't notice any smartphone: "Hey, does your new iPhone have that antenna problem I heard about repeated on the news, over and over, day and night, 547 times?".

5% of the replies. "Yup this phone has a problem, don't buy it."

95% of the replies. "No, but look at this magical blah blah blah display blah blah apps blah blah..." OK OK, Stop, Stop, I get the idea... (Thinks about walking into an Apple store... later in the week walks out with a $$$ MacBook Pro... and an i4...)

I'm thrilled my iPhone 4 as long as I don't try to USE IT AS A PHONE. The PacNW has the WORST rate of dropped calls I've ever seen. I'd say EASILY 3 out of 4 calls drop within the first 2 minutes of my conversations, especially if I'm driving and using the bluetooth/handsfree. Just awful :(

My iPhone4 drops calls like a 20-cent hooker does tricks (frequently and terribly). It's far worse than my 3GS ever was. I can kill the signal in my hand without even trying. No death grip is necessary.

Maybe it's defective. Maybe not.

I bever have dropped calls... I suffer from calls I hang up on regularly from the proximity sensor being F-ed up! It's seriously almost EVERY call... no joke. lol

Sounds like a very AT&T thing to do. It also explains why every time I try to call someone back after a drop I immediately get their voicemail, despite the fact that they weren't trying to call me back yet.

I estimate that 50% of my AT&T calls are dropped these days, verses about 10% a year and a half ago. I know it's not my iPhone, I know it's the network because it's become drastically worse with every AT&T phone I have (and my friends who have AT&T but not iPhones), and I live in Dallas - where their f*#king headquarters is!

Steve said that AT&T can have a tower built in Texas within two weeks, and I can tell you that while that may be true they sure aren't doing it.

I want to clarify and state that I'm still using an iPhone 3G.

Look at the months they are comparing in the above graphs. Why don't they compare same phone same month? Why not compare July 2010 iphone 4 statistics to July 2010 3gs stats. Seems fishy to me.

Also- I was on the phone to AT&T this morning complaining about the 3 dropped calls I got while speaking to APple tech support this morning and they asked if I'm on iphone 4. I said yes and she said, there are known reception problems with the iphone 4.

I still like the phone 4 more than my 3gs because overall it gets better reception. But really I think AT&T, in my area at least- Chicago, stinks because the frequencies they use don't penetrate buildings well.

AT&T and APple are both at fault here, but I don't seee why Apple has to take all the blame.

I've had about 2% of the dropped calls on my iphone 4 than I had on my 3GS. I'm very satisfied.

My iPhone 4 reception is much more better than iPhone 3GS and Samsung Omnia2. I'm overall very happy with it and i think i would be the same even if the issue was real but it isn't. Every phone (smartphone or not) we tested in out group of friends had bars dropped if antenna was covered, especially a new Nokia 5230 which go from 6-7 bars to 1-0.

Sure. A survey is more accurate than actual measured numbers from the source.

Right.
Yeah man. Pretty stupid survey. That's also why I made this comment: "Let's stick to the facts shall we." – referring to the AT&T dropped call numbers (just in case people missed the clue of it).

Yes it is, change it or check is your micro sim metal is in contact with the slot.

Even if these numbers don't just differ by statistical margins, there's a big difference between the number of dropped calls, and the number of people who notice dropped calls.

Different people make different numbers of calls.

If 1 person in a hundred kept trying to make 100's of calls more than average and they all dropped for him and nobody else, then the dropped call rate would be 50% or more, but the number of people reporting the problem might be only 1%.

Dropped calls were overblown. In the frenzy, the issue of "drop in bars" became equated with dropped calls.

I still say the only real test is to have people stand side by side in various locations and demonstrate an inability of the iphone to make a call beside another ATT device that can. Until then, its just chatter.

Retina Display is the favorite? I can't even tell the difference, unless I'm up close, and then it's not really all that useful to have "slightly crisper" icons.

My favorite feature is the fact that the camera doesn't take 10 seconds to load, and another 5 to take a picture (on the 3G). I sure wish the camera supported Pinch to Zoom tho.

Are you serious? Run, do not walk, to the doctors office and get your eyes examined, because if you don't see an incredible difference between the two, there is something seriously wrong with your eyes.
