No. You just need to type your PIN number to complete the transaction rather than using contactless which does not require authentication.

Contactless = No authentication needed on transactions up to £100
Over £100 = PIN number required
Oh wow. We don't even have PINs for credit cards, only debit cards.

I think this study is a lagging indicator - not particularly current times. I think the biggest contributor was the slow adoption of Apple Pay by the retail outlets themselves… it wasn’t until the last year or so before I started noticing the option being prominently displayed at the point of sale/terminals. I use it all the time - only problem is, is the need to transfer the funds into Apple Pay… that can be a pain to manage and remember to do

I use Apple Pay almost everywhere that it's offered. It's much easier than having to pull out a card out of my wallet, and I don't run the risk of accidentally losing the card and compromising the card number either.

I've also had numerous chip cards fail, and some merchants don't even accept the magstripe anymore (others do still accept the swipe, but make it a pain to use). Apple pay solves all of that. There isn't a chip that can break, and there is no magstripe that someone can compromise with a hidden reader. It just works.

Right - that's the frustration. Every terminal takes a different amount of time to activate, some say hold for 3 seconds, and if you do it wrong, the process to reset the terminal and start again can sometimes be 30 seconds.
Not to mention self checkout where you have to bag your own items while someone is breathing down your neck.

So inserting the chip means my hands are free to do whatever I need to and ignore the screen until it chimes at me to remove it.

Thankfully I haven’t encountered that sort of frustration for a few years now. My card is on my Apple Watch so when the terminal is ready it’s fast with no reaching into pockets for iPhones or cards. If others prefer the traditional way, then fair enough as it doesn’t impact me whatsoever.

Can’t you add your credit card or debit card to Apple Pay? Thankfully in the UK you don’t need to see an Apple Pay logo to know if it works or not because it works on all contactless pay terminals here. Hopefully other countries will adopt that method too one day.

Yes, credit and debit cards can be added to Apple Pay. It was slow for all the banks to get on board in the beginning, but I would guess it’d be hard to find a bank these days that can’t be set up as a card in the Wallet.
