Before the creation of the welfare state and NHS dentistry it wasn't unheard of for a father to have all of his daughter's teeth removed prior to her wedding as a gift to his new son-in-law. This was to make her less of a financial burden (and not to facilitate 'gumming' as some might suggest).
 
Ew... scissors? Knives?

I'm all for removing crap from your mouth but wouldn't something like a knife or a pair of scissors hurt? Not only immediately but the enamel on your teeth?

What I do when I don't have a toothpick close at hand or floss, I just use a tissue wrapped around my finger and sort of poke my nail halfway through it. It's not as effective but it'll tide me over until I can clean my mouth properly...
