Suttle encouragement to buy a new phone

The old Apple would never have gimped their old phones! :p Here it is on the 2G:

Cut off on my 6s plus as well since it doesn't show all 5 photos like you seem to think should happen. Darn, better sell this phone and wait for one big enough to show all the app store photos!

Thanks Cergman,

And no no no. I am arguing that the first photo should show and not be cut off on a 4" device. See my original picture. I can't see the whole picture and it is annoying and I think it's on purpose to encourage a 4" screen user to buy a 4.7" device.

It's a theory. And I really am hoping someone will refute it because it's incredibly stupid, but fascinating if the theory does have merit.

But you tapped this photo. This whole conversation has sprouted from the belief that one should not have to tap a photo to view it on the app store. It doesn't make sense to me either.
Well what does it look like BEFORE you click it? I'm surprised planned obsolescence hasn't made your 2g explode.
That is from before you tap on it. On iPhone OS 3, tapping the image doesn't do anything other than center the image on the screen. For some context:

To be honest, I'm more surprised that I can still search the app store on this phone.

EDIT: RIP Genius app recommendations. You are missed. </3

"Fug it. You don't want to buy a 6? We're rotating your images in the store so you have to break yo neck looking at 'em. That'll teach you for not giving us more money"
-Tim Cook, the worst CEO ever who talk like this in private

C'mon. Somebody post an image of how your 6/s handles Sims Free Play. Don't be scurred to prove that I have a point and therefore win the Internet.

While it is cut of on 4 inch devices and not on the larger screened iPhones, this is a terrible theory. Apple makes money from app sales and a large portion of their users are on older phones. Also, a company like Apple has much better means of convincing users to upgrade. This layout is probably due to the new UIStackView based layout, rather than a weak attempt to convince users to upgrade.

So it displays fine on a 6 is what you're admitting.

Apple is focusing on their newest devices and ignoring how things display on 4" devices.

It would be a simple to just display images like it used to before these über widescreen images came in and ruined how app pages look. But, Apple wants you to buy their newer 4.7 devices and not keep older 4" devices around. Profits profits profits.

Again, its a subtle thing that they are doing to encourage purchase of a larger 4.7 phone. If subtle little things add up, then in your mind subconsciously you will want a larger phone. Apple doesn't have to hit a consumer over the head with a large ad campaigne to encourage purchase of a more expensive device.

Exhibit B: 16gb phones when the 6s can take 4K video and Live Photos. It's very easy for a salesman at the Apple Store to tell a customer, "well the 16 is a great phone and you'll love it, but with the fabulous 4K video and Live Photos you're going to want the 64gb phone." Easy. Customer is going to say to herself, "Oh I see. Well that extra 100 is worth it so I don't run out of room." My mom bought the 128 so she never has to worry about space.

Same scenario with 5s vs 6 or 6s: Salesman: "5s is great, but the screen is smaller and you'll lose some screen real estate. Check out the AppStore for example."
Easy.
Customer: "Oh yeah, I see now. Let me see the 6/s".

Boom. Subtle. Upsell.

You do have a point. It may be intentional, it may just be a result of Apple not putting in the effort to care about user experience. However, in either case they are trying to upsell you.

I completely agree with the 16gb. Its unusable in 2015 and a really greedy move on apple's part. They basically set the price of an iPhone $100 dollars more. Great for the shareholders, bad for the consumer. But they're a business and in that sense, their priorities are correct.

Ah, not placing emphasis on user experience. There's the Apple I recognize now :D

That make sense, though. Some things will fall through the cracks when you have such a large company.

I meant that Apple may test less on old devices since they want to make sure newer devices have the best experience. I didn't mean no work done, just less.

I get what you're saying, I do, but I still have to disagree. I can't seem to believe that Apple's idea of subtly hinting they want you to buy a bigger phone, is solely by slightly cutting off picture previews in the App Store (essentially previews-of-a-preview). Remember that you can still tap it to see the full picture. It's not as if you're restricted from seeing it on a 5S either.

Now if you pressed the picture, and the FULL IMAGE was still cut-off, I think you would be on to something. But that's not the case. It's simply that the more screen real-estate you have, the more content you can see. Sure, this may make someone want to upgrade to a bigger screen personally, but I don't think that was Apple's secret, evil scheme. Honestly, I think you're giving them too much credit.

Also remember there are still many, many elements that are cut off on my 6 and even 6 Plus. Not just in the App Store, but in other Apple apps as well. The 5S is not singled out, except for this one scenario. Not only that, but again, I mentioned that only about half of the apps appeared like that on the 5S, meaning it's also the developers' choice on how they display their image previews.

If you had more "proof", other than one isolated scenario, I may be more inclined to side with you. But so far, this is the only example you have shown of this theory where ONLY the 4-inch screens were affected.

Isn't the app store basically mostly server based? So some things haven't been optimized across the board for some devices. Could be a simple bug or something just getting overlooked. Seems more like a "making mountain out of a molehill" and/or "attributing to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity" type of situation than anything else.

It is mostly server based, like the featured section, but the layout of the app view is hard coded. They mentioned that in WWDC15

I've noticed even on the 6S things like apple pay don't show the image correctly/fully, pretty poor really that the scaling doesn't work correctly.

Straw firmly grasped, Apple Dude. I have a legitimate argument with no counter argument yet.
My counter argument is I really don't think very many, if any,
People are going to upgrade based in this slight inconvenience.

But the reality is there are many potential things at play. My friend makes websites and for some reason had an issue getting them to display right on an iPad mini. Just the mini. Nothing else. This could be as simple as that. It's not an AppStore breaking "bug" and has very likely gone unnoticed by anyone in charge of the AppStore, assuming my answer is correct.

There are very many ways that planed obsolescence makes sense to me. This just isn't one of them.
