In my opinion (not just because I work for AT&T) I think its more of a hassle and there is no guarantee that the 3GS is even un-lockable at this point. I would wait until the DevTeam jailbreaks it to see.

This post is nowhere near recommending jail-breaking your phone due to the stability to the software and the legal ramifications of breaking the contract terms.

As always any specific questions can be answered by PM

I was even thinking of just getting the regular 3g one and not the 3gs cause it's even cheaper now. Isn't unlocking very simple now of days, i did it when it first came out with my ipod touch and that was a whole process hah.
I wouldnt want to switch to att cause i have a 7 dollar 1000 text deal and 3000 minutes for only 49 bucks. ATT's prices do not even compare to that, isnt it 15 dollars for 1000 minutes? thats just ridiculous.

Stability and legal issues aside, it might be a long time till the 3GS will be able to be unlocked. As of right now, recent 3G's (not 3GS's lol) are not able to be unlocked because of the baseband. It's possible that it will be figured out in the future but as of now, only some early 3G's are unlockable.

If you want a for sure unlocked iPhone, get one of the first gens. They can all be unlocked.

Agreed. Not only is he being extremely helpful to us, but he is the most knowledgeable AT&T rep I have ever come in contact with. The people at his local store are lucky!

There is that, and the fact that I have PMed him/her five times already.

And there is NO TELLING how many he/she has gotten after welcoming them.

OOOOHHHH I thought the 3g's were unlockable i saw them on the pwnge thing and quickpwn ones too I still a dummy.
I'd buy the first gens but the ones i've seen on ebay look all scratched up and since i've never used ebay I dont even know where to begin with that. I should have kept mine when i first bought it.

Thanks guys I really appreciate the kudos. I want to make AT&T have its good name again, one customer at a time. I really believe in our vision which is: To connect everyone with their world everywhere they live and work and do it better then anyone else. By offering great customer service every time consistently, I believe that you are more likely to be happy with your service; it really is common sense.
As always if you have anymore questions feel free to PM or email me,

Chris

Ha yeah, same here. He will become an AT&T legend. We should all call in and demand he get a raise! :D

I recommended to him via PM that he should start his own AT&T Representative Twitter account (marked as unofficial for legal reasons), and hopefully with enough momentum, AT&T will pick up on it and offer him the position full time.

Well some of the 3G's are able to be unlocked. It all depends on how much they have updated it. You can't go past a certain firmware, it changes the baseband. I suggest googling it and figuring it out for yourself whether you want a 3G or not. :)

Thats a great idea!

Okay, let me make sure I get all of this straight: I have a family plan with 2 lines, one has my iPhone 3G, the other has a cheap phone that's my mom's. If I go into the store and say I want to do and upgrade swap on the second line to an iPhone 3G S, will they not charge the data plan to the second line at all, and just put my SIM into the 3G S? Also, I have a Premier account, would that affect anything? Side question, if they see that I have a Premier account, will they also waive the upgrade fees? Lastly, should I go on launch day or should I wait until the Saturday-Sunday after? I really wanted to wait in line at the Apple store on launch day but it looks like I can't if I want to do the upgrade swap.

One more thing, if I decide to order online, would I be charged for the data plan on the second line if I just do the upgrade swap from my home? Would it work the same way as in-store? Thanks. :)

EDIT: PM'd you, saDeRmac.

I know there are 5 different versions of this but here is my situation: I have an Iphone family plan with 3 iphones (Original Iphone and 2 iphone 3g's) I am upgrading of course the original iphone (Mom's) to the iphone 3gs I want to swap a 3g line (Mine) with the newly upgraded 3gs line.

Getting 3gs shipped to the house.

1. Soon as I take the 3gs out of the box do I remove the new sim card in the 3gs and replace it with my 3g sim card before I even activate it? Then do a restore to make everything the way I had it on the 3g?

2. Take the sim out of the original Iphone (Mom's) and put it in my 3g then do a restore from her machine where she syncs it to and now it becomes her new phone.

All 3 phones have the same exact data plans we share minutes and rollover minutes of course.

Don't mean to beat a dead horse but I want to be absolutely sure.

Thanks

Step by step:

Home:
1) Activate your iPhone 3GS by following the instructions included.
2) Call Customer Care for the upgraded line and explain that you are doing an upgrade swap to a iPhone 3GS on a different line. Explain that you need switch to the 3G IMEI to your moms line.
3) Make sure the new IMEI of the iPhone 3GS is on your Line.
4) Thats it.

This helps prevent problems with warranty issues and so on and so forth.

I'm on a family plan as well - 4 users, 3 are iPhones

The non-iPhone user was eligible for an upgrade. I went to the AT&T store and the sales rep said it's no problem to do it. I got the $199/$299 price point for the 32GB under her line, and they will just swap the SIM cards or whatever it is they have to do when I go to pick it up.

I then made sure he knew to remove the data plan for my old 3G so not to add another iPhone data plan when still only 3 of 4 users have iPhones. He said it's not a problem to do that. I'm feeling good. I was pissed when I thought I'd have to pay full price or wait - thank god for family plan :)

Bringing in 3 lines from Verizon

Sooooo saDeRmac, I would appreciate some help!

Got one line with AT&T (one month old into a 2-year). I am bringing in 3 more lines to AT&T and making a family plan.

Now-
Line 1: LG Xenon

After-
Line 1: Apple iPhone
Line 2: LG Xenon

Line 3: Apple iPhone
Line 4: Apple iPhone

I want to get 3 iPhones for all three ported lines, BUT want one of the new lines to "Upgrade Switch" with the first line.

What would be the best way to do this?
Would changing the plan from an individual to a family violate the rebate restrictions from LetsTalk.com?
How can I get the iPhone on the 19th through preorder, and do this upgrade switch?

Thanks in advance! :)

edit: Is there any advantage of pre-ordering iPhone from Apple vs AT&T?

Step 1: Activate all iPhones according to ATT's procedures (meaning don't swap anything yet, just activate all the phones on the lines you bought them on).

Step 2: Switch SIM's so that everyone's number ends up on the phones those people are going to use.

Step 3: Call ATT and tell them you upgrade swapped, and that the phones being used on each account (now that you've switched SIM's to their desired phones) are how you'd like to keep it. They will then look for that on their network and update IMEI's accordingly.

Is this correct? I'm a little confused about step 3, but I'm hoping that's right. Is this something they can figure out by just looking at your account and somehow seeing what phone you are currently connected with on the network?

I would like to know the answer to your situation. I don't have access to the SIM card of the upgrade line (mom lives far away). So I would also like to know if I could buy the 3GS on the upgrade line and just insert my sim card then activate.

Does the activation have to have the original upgrade line's sim card?

by the way, how do we recommend saDeRmac for moderator? Thank you for all the info. yOu deserve a moderator job.

saDeRmac, would you recommend calling or going to an At&t store in person?

Thanks
